The whole Santa charade has good points and bad points.

On the good side of things, it makes kids happy. Kids enjoy believing in magic and all that made up stuff. They love unwrapping gifts that they feel they've earned with their good behaviour. For this reason, Christmas is moreso for children than adults.

However, it is as you said: parents lying to their children. I imagine many children take it poorly, as they only see that betrayal by their parents and the dissolution of their beloved fantasy world.
