A crack resonated through the air and for the second time in a very short time span, Ken tensed. He was on edge today, that was certain. The noise had come from somewhere close. If he had to guess, there was someone or something less than a mile from him.
"It seems we have company," Ken said as his lips curved into a smile. Running his fingers through his hair, he could only imagine the source of the noise to be an enemy. If it was an innocent townsperson, Ken would let him or her leave, after a stern interrogation of course. And if it was an inhabitant of the manor, well, the poor creature would be outnumbered three to one.
"Let's pay our new friend a visit," Ken said as he strode deeper into the woods to to the source of the noise. He took long, silent strides, his boots barely making a noise against the soft dirt path. He eyes flitted around his field of vision as his sixth sense was searching the premises for signs of unusual life.
Turns out he didn't need his sixth sense. A slew of curse words alerted him to the dangling girl hanging onto a branch not far from him. He spotted the broken branch on the ground and instantly realized what must have happened. As he moved closer to the dangling girl, a shock of familiarity ran through him as he recognized the voice and cutting choice of words.
"Blaire?" Ken called out, struggling to keep his laughter under control. "How's it hanging up there?"
