My father did however for my birthday when I was eight, buy me my piano.

I lucked out. My mom went to school for music education and was incredibly supportive of me in music. My brothers and I were allowed to have one thing that was our own. One of my brothers did karate, another ROTC, and I got to have music lessons. THe voice lessons were 15$ a lesson...30 minutes each. But the teacher was so nice and the lesson would always end up being almost an hour and she never charged extra. My mom, even though she was a single parent for some of my upbringing and didn't have a lot of extra money, would always make sure I got to my voice lesson and paid for it. I am lucky to have her be so supportive of me and to work so hard. It paid off at least, since I'm now a music teacher as well XD
