Companies doing simulcasts have really picked up in the last few years. They realized that if they don't sub it a few hours after it's released in Japan, someone will fansub it and those potential profits just dissipate. Even with the simulcasting, people still rip the official subs and put them on pirate streaming sites. Both Funimation and Crunchyroll will have theirs up just a short while after it's aired in Japan.

There are a few paywalls. Like you have to wait a week before seeing the latest episode unless you have a Crunchyroll subscription. I think Funi does something similar, but they also have some of the series up on Hulu right away. You can watch about 80% of new current anime on legal streaming sites, plus they have a huge back catalogue of things to watch. I think last season I only had one show they didn't pick up and I had to watch by alternate means.
