Well go with your gut if nothing else just don't end up getting played, alot of people out there might try to have their cake and eat it too. I don't think you need to stop hanging out with him and the others if they are your friends, just back off and let him do the math.
If he gets his panties in a wad and makes a scene then it just shows what he thought of your friendship to begin with.
