I absolutely love Garth Nix' Abhorsen series! Especially the first book, Sabriel.

Also the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind is excellent. Wonderful blend of human conditions and fantasy. Magic and power also has a price and it shows how sometimes good intentions does not = the right course.
