Introduction
It was a cold night in September when it happened. We were all sitting about cramming for our first tests of the semester. Groans and little sounds of shuffling papers could be heard as everyone flipped from page to page of their massive texts trying to figure out exactly how they were supposed to remember one page of the material, let alone 200. It was going to be a long semester—if only we'd known the half of it.
The first we knew that something strange was going on was when we saw the flashing lights just outside the windows. Blue. Green. Purple. All of them unearthly. Yet, at the time, we all imagined it was just a group of frat boys having a little too much fun. Being study-o-holics, we simply ignored it.
That is, until we heard the sound. It rent the air like a sharp nail through silk, and made the hairs on our necks stand straight on end.
"OMG, WTF IS THAT?!?!?!?!" screamed a girl sitting in a wing-backed chair by the encyclopedias.
Before anyone had time to reply, the library's double doors burst open and two massive alien figures exclaimed loudly: "WE HAVE COME TO PLAY CHESS AMONGST THE BOOKS WHILE WE WAIT FOR OUR STARDUST TO BE COLLECTED, PEONS. MOVE OR BE EATEN!"
And that is how we ended up in a corner watching aliens play chess for a week.
