Leonard frowned at Joanna. “I understand her emotions are strong, but that does not excuse poor manners. Leanna apologize to Miss Bronte for your rudeness immediately.” He sighed. “This is exactly why you need a governess.”

Leanna glared at Papa. She knew he didn’t particularly care that Mother was gone either, so why did she have to pretend otherwise. As the governess spoke to her father as if she wasn’t there she felt herself growing even more unhappy. Mrs. Browne had always taken care of her. She didn’t need some new person telling her what to do.

Leanna was mollified a bit when the new governess came and spoke to her directly. “I’m sorry I was rude, Miss Bronte.” She looked her over thoughtfully. “What kind of fun? Do I have to write my alphabet and name ten times each day?” The aforementioned task was her least favorite part of the day. Mrs. Browne had insisted that a Lady had perfect penmanship, and that practice made perfect.
