Hints and tips
If you're keen on improving your chances of winning, here are some helpful pointers for you.
- Try for as balanced a look as possible. Too much of one color in one area will throw the whole look off.
- Make good use of accessories; a combination of bare arms, legs or midriff, and no hand held items makes for an incomplete looking avatar.
- Use your hair to its best advantage:
- go for a contrasting color that compliments your outfit, rather than one that blends in and disappears.
- use a shade that matches an accent color that you haven't used a lot of.
- If you want to use the same shade as your predominant outfit color, use a shorter style so the hair and item are separated and don't just form a big amorphous blob of the same color.
- Don't be afraid to be brave with unusual color combinations.
- Aim for flow, the items of your outfit need to look good together.
- Following on from that, use your layering wisely. For example, a short, tight skirt over the top of a big puffy one that sticks out around the sides of it isn't going to look good. Try to pair items so they don't conflict messily.
- Beware of clutter! It's one things to have a balanced look and another to be weighed down with a rat's nest of items.
- Don't add items to your look just because they're the right colour. If they don't go with the other items, you're just going to look silly. For example; pairing a plaid lumberjack coat with an exotic skirt simply because they're both lilac, DON'T DO IT!
- Don't be boring with color:
- wearing the same color from head to toe is NEVER going to win unless your avatar has an interesting and clearly visible theme.
- wearing just 2 colors is also unlikely to win, especially if you've matched your hair to your outfit. Pink + white all over = fail.
- using the same color combinations as everyone else won't make you stand out. Try and steer clear of the black/red/gold or black/silver/red combos unless you have an original twist, they're just too over-done.
- While items should have a certain degree of matching, don't get obsessive about it! We don't want you to end up looking like a monochromatic puddle, so have a bit of fashionable flair.
- Don't go for a look that is too similar to a previous winner.
- Don't use too many items from one set, as this lacks originality.
- DO NOT snipe about other people's winning outfits. There will be no tolerance for rudeness or sour grapes in this thread. Not everyone's tastes are the same. Each winner is that admin's personal choice, not necessarily who looks the best on the entire site. So please don't take away someone's pleasure in winning by being grouchy because you personally don't like the outfit or because you think you should have won instead.
