I think it's a great switch for it to be done by chatting then people get to know each other more and it's more like a community. It'll also be harder for some people to earn item though. I think it would be good to have both options but make the drop rate on stars less than the blooms were last event. That way chating is still encouraged and having a star pop up is more of a surprise.
