You make it to a doorway when you get all the way up the stairs. Opening the door, you find you're in a large dining room. There doesn't seem to be modern lighting here, however, since the low chandelier is lit with heavy red candles. Other fire-needy lamps rest on the long table, or scattered here and there. The place is vacant of dust, grime, and mold, and in fact, the table itself is laid out with a stunningly-white table cloth and set for mealtime. On one plate is a heavily-folded paper, imprinted with the words: Map of The Grounds.

A map ought to come in handy! You have two choices regarding the map:
  • Keep it with you as you go.
  • Hang it up on the wall for future reference and study.
  • Ignore it completely and take a look around. This seems to be a house.

You see that there several doors to the left and right of you, once possibly belonging to corpses, now open and vacant. You see a body on the floor, scalped, pale, drained of blood, staring at you among white-and-red cloth, just beside a dissection table. A pale, fading stream of light enters from the only narrow, domed window above the floor to the left, and a heavy metal door along the other side of the room rests open.

There are several hiding places here. Bins whose lids are slightly ajar, a few cases unopened on a counter to the right. A sink, perhaps filled with usable tools.
  • Stop for a while and try to remember where you are.
  • React with disgust at everything you see and grow frantic.
  • Search the room for weapons, in case someone's near who could harm you.
  • Leave the room empty-handed, perhaps there are others nearby who could assist you in some way.

  • Inspect another bin; there might be something better in another...
  • Take your weapon and go to the door.
  • Wait here for a while longer, perhaps you’ll be met with whoever brought you here.
Cringing, she shoves the cover back on. Definitely her worst nightmare. Pausing to catch her breath and calm her heart rate, she turns hesitantly and knocks on another bin. After a moment and with hesitation, she slowly tries to open it.
As soon as you lift the lid, something flies at you with a screech. It hits you square in the chest and sends you onto your backside, scampering away. Only then do you see that it's a rat, massive for such a thing, with ugly yellow teeth that show as it turns your way, as if showing its displeasure at your disrupting its nap. Before you can react, however, it scurries through a hole in the wall near the metal lockers, which is far too small for you to get through.
  • Count your victories and leave the morgue.
  • Poke around a bit more, just in case!
  • Stay in the morgue with your weapons and wait for help to come. Perhaps you'll get lucky?

Meanwhile....

Marcello studies the monitor labeled 'morgue'. How delightful! His thoughts are cheery, despite a grim, colorless, and slouching outward demeanor. They're all awake. Perfect.... He runs a hand over the syringe he'd set next to the series of glowing monitors, empty now from its several past uses. His very small amount of knowledge in tranquilizers had allowed him to administer the perfect dosages to each of his little rats, so that they could wake exactly half an hour apart from one another. Now he sits in an old but sturdy chair, feet propped up on the row of desks pushed against a peeling wall. He's safe here, in the attic of the house. He'd managed to create a perfect pocket for his exit door, which fit seamlessly with the rest of the wall so no one would even know it existed. Then again, he didn't want to take chances. On his waist sat a couple switchblades, and a small 9mm. handgun. In a shadowy corner laid a few shotguns, ropes, handcuffs, and keys.

He wasn't low on tranquilizers, either. They were absolutely necessary, after all. How would he be able to intervene every now and then, keep the... 'game'... fresh if they knew he was so near at every moment? Of course, the food he'd provided, laid out in the kitchen's pantry, was laced here and there with the same sleep-inducing tasteless liquid. All he had to do was watch.....
