Bio: Jo comes from a large family of poor farmers. Her parents were unfortunate to have five daughters and one son who survived to maturity, which sounds like a good thing except that by the time Jo became eligible for marriage, being the youngest, there simply wasn't anything left to give as a dowry to any potential husband. So, she stayed on to help on the farm and take care of her parents as they aged.

Her personality is marked by an insatiable curiosity, which sometimes borders on reckless or rude, and she probably would've been a voracious reader if she had ever been taught how. Most of the time she is a friendly sort and is slow to anger, although she has a bit of a stubborn streak and she will lash out if pushed past her limits. Needless to say, being a bit of an outspoken sort like this didn't charm her any husbands when she was young enough, and she was a late bloomer in terms of beauty, so no one had been willing to take her on for free.

Continuing to wear her hair as an unmarried girl would, she finally caught the attention of someone passing by as she worked in a garden. She would never be able to pass as a noble lady, her long days in the sun having freckled her something fierce, but perhaps that was part of the point? And so comes the opportunity for a new life... one that she isn't quite ready for.
