A tip for preparing asparagus is to bend the stalk near the bottom until it breaks, moving up the stalk until it snaps. This will do away with the woody part at the bottom.
You can also scrape the outside of the bottom part of the stalk with a potato peeler to do away with the strings.
Overcooking it can make it mushy.
I don't mind eating it raw if it isn't old and woody.
