It's one of China's '4 great classics' (the Chinese loved to have " # great ______" lists) It's about a couple of prestigious families, and the lives and intrigues of their members. I say it's convoluted because it literally has hundreds of characters, and as I don't have great exposure to Chinese names, I imagine it would be very confusing for me.
