"Things that grow don't interest me," Kai said as he turned a corner. He nodded his head to Axsher's words, listening more or less intently, although he didn't look it. Even when he was interested in something, his stare seemed to resemble a stoner's. Vacant and a little awed. It wasn't something Kai could help since he always looked that way.

After another minute of walking, he stopped abruptly and looked up as if he just realized he'd come to the door he was looking for. It was as if his feet knew better than his mind where he was going. "We're here," he said, then knocked. "He's always here so-" The door opened in the middle of Kai's sentence. "Oh, hello Mr. Landlord. I have money to pay for my rent."
