Sarah couldn’t lie. Just climbing into the small jet was one of the hardest things she’d ever done. In all honesty, she was fairly certain that if she let things go, or even if she asked for Zenon to just stay with her, that he would comply. It touched her strangely, and the commander couldn’t say if it actually please her or upset her.

She fell silent as they made the trip, though occasionally she would hum with the radio, peering outside. Her expression was thoughtful. She should be thinking of what was lying ahead, but instead she was still caught up in the other air city. Occasionally her sapphire eyes would shift to the Hadar heir, and the crease would return to between her eyebrows for a moment.

Mannik didn’t lead Adelmar away, but he did shift uncomfortably. He wasn’t about to tell Adelmar how difficult it had been to convince the two males to do as he asked, or what he’d had to barter to get them to agree.

“You’re to have a guard.” Mannik stated, sure that Adelmar would protest. “Well, in a manner of speaking. There will be someone watching you…” The soldier motioned to Pierre, who was clearly not pleased about the job. “And if something should happen, people will be nearby to protect you.”

A tongue ran across his lips, giving away how nervous Mannik felt, before he continued. “It won’t be noticeable to people not paying attention, and it’s not perfect, but it should help you a lot. It won’t just be Pierre, but there’s a group of people that will be rotating… Uhm. Here…” One of the various pockets on Mannik’s clothing was opened, and he held out a small whistle. “If anyone breaks into your house, if you get scared the scout won’t see it, you can blow this…and the group will get to you.”
