I don't know if collecting stars is better or worse. On one hand, I'm a lurker by nature, so I sometimes find it hard to earn gold for that reason. On the other hand, surfing and going through page after page and not getting whatsoever can be quite frustrating. I'll be sure to give feedback after the event ends.
