I have love/ hate relationships with AUs. I think sometimes they work really well, especially for some minor characters.
Sometimes, I agree with Chibes, though. If you're going to drastically change a character and put him with all new OCs, then you could just change his name and have your own original story. I did that once, and I'm glad I abandoned it as a fanfic. It got to the point where I was making all these overly complicated twists to keep him as the same character.
