You will be able to figure it out. The events can be confusing at first simply because there are a lot of things you can do and it can become overwhelming. I'd start out with the easy games first. There are two or three of the games in the stickied threads that involve copying a form on the front page and simply posting it to "roll dice". If you take your time and read over the posts of each contest thread you can learn how to play them pretty quickly.

You can do the avi contests. I'm sure of it. You have all event to collect tokens and spend them on items in the event store. It is pretty easy to get a lot of the commons if you can post a lot. n_n Alot of the items in the store go along the the avatar contest themes.
