The World of Infernus

((meaning of the lands below. If you have other suggestions, let me know.))
World leaders came together to create the World Alliance in the face of an impending catastrophe that changed the world forever. A rouge Jovian on a near collision course with the solar system was set to alter the orbit of the planet closer to the sun. The result would be a molten planetary surface on the sun side and cooling lava fields on the night side. Trying to save as many people as they could, Scientists made as many floating cities as possible in the time left before the catastrophe. In the end however, some had to be left behind to fend for themselves in the off axis shadow of the north pole. A location of a floating city that wasn't finished in time.

3 hundred years later, the World Alliamce is working hard to escape their molten world. While the cities are quite safe, shielded by their umbrella of rock and energy fields, an accident a hundred and fifty years before almost caused a highly populated city to plunge into the molten sea. Many of the lower inhabitants died from over exposure to heat and deadly concentrated levels of toxic gases in the air. This galvanized the city leaders to create a viable space program to reach out to the stars and colonize new worlds.

At present, their space program is thriving. The Central City is the base of space operations. The largest of all the cities built, it is home to the Space Academy and is the main staging station of launch operations. All supplies and ship parts are sent from Central City into orbit to the shipyard.

In addition, over the last three hundred years, the people left behind on the planet's surface have evolved to survive the extreme environment on the shadowed surface. Their skin adapted, becoming a lightly pigmented, nearly rock-like protective coating over the entire surface of their bodies to protect them from harsh cosmic radiation and the extreme heat of the planet surface. This makes them excellent candidates for working on the space station and ship yard in orbit.

Scientists are getting close to their goal of interstellar colonization. However, a rogue uprising has taken over one of the World Alliance cities. An insane Military Captain thinks that the World Alliance should be working towards making their floating cities safer places to live and believes the interstellar colonization to be propaganda while the rich and wealthy are pampered in the Central City. The Rogue Captain Believes it possible to make the planet hospitable once again. Metals are limited. Asteroid mining only just producing viable amounts of ore. Many of the cities are beginning to decay as resources are diverted to Central City and the Colonization Ships. The Rogue Captian will stop at nothing to destroy the space program and has already launched an assault on it's sister cities.

Many of the land dwellers are conflicted about taking sides in this fight. While they are treated as freaks in Central City and elsewhere, anything is a better life than what they have on the surface right now. Taking full advantage of this, the Rogue Captain has been aggressively been recruiting them to help fight against the The World Alliance and to lend him((or her?)) their supplies.

After years of conflict and set backs, the Rogues have taken control of two other cities, one of them with a key military installation. With a bulk of military might in their radical hands, the Rogues are finally ready to strike at the heart of the space program! They'll do whatever it takes to take control of Central City!

Useful Facts:
  • Water is recycled and supplemented with moisture nets on the higher reaches of the city.
  • A few of the cities specialize in gardening, farms and other food production.
  • Most people can only afford simple synthesized or cloned food while the rich and elite enjoy the top of the line fresh goods.
  • Most people can't stand the sight of the Land Dwellers and treat them as sub humans
  • The Home of the Land Dwellers is hot but just barely is cool enough for farms and livestock to sustain life. Farms though are drying up. forcing them to consider other alternatives.
  • Some factions of Land Dwellers deal exclusively with the Rogues in return for a small amount of living space in their rogue cities and protection from retribution from The World Alliance
((What other things should be defined here?))
