She didn't know how long she had been searching for, but Azaela couldn't search any longer. The ship had sunk into the darkness now. If her friends were on board, they would be dead by now anyway. If they had been swept away in the currents with debris, she'd missed it.
Azaela fought back tears of sadness and anger. How could her father do this!? That was it. She was mad enough at the King of the seas now that she would swim to the nearest island and stay there, forever! Okay, probably not really forever. But until she'd gotten over the awful thing he'd done. See him try and capsize an island! she thought.
Really, he probably could do that. Well, not that, but create a storm that would wipe the island out anyway. But then, that would be far too dangerous with her on land, so, it was settled. To land.
Azaela didn't actually know which way land was closest. She picked a direction and swam quickly. She knew it wouldn't be long before her father sent his men in search of her. She swam, sniffling back tears of hate and sorrow. She'd never forgive him for being so heartless.
