There was never any doubt that the island was supposed to be a tropical getaway
for pampered humans. But what some of the oldest cats argued over, curled up by the
empty fireplaces (when they thought the kittens were fast asleep), was why the humans
left. Left in a hurry, with possessions still lining the shelves, rugs still in place, plush
couches and tables gathering dust and pawprints. 'Of course they took their dogs,' one
would remark, tail bristling at the memory of the yapping, bouncing creatues humans
couldnt resist. What was left unsaid was that the humans left in a downpour- in boats.
None of the smug whiskered faces would have been caught dead in that drenching night.

And so the cats were left behind. There were rumors of course. That they'd all killed each
other off in a territory dispute (which no self respecting cat would stoop to), or perhaps
those wretched boats had overturned in the night. A few ruminated that the humans would
return one day - but it was all speculation at best.

Nepenthe is an island, named by the humans who inhabited it after the
fabled 'Anti-Sorrow' brew of Homer's Odyssey. There is a lake at the center
of the isle, bordered by the ruins of a quaint town. With the absence of the
humans, the buildings are in disrepair, and the vegetation of the surrounding
forests has begun to creep back in upon the town. Not that that makes a whit
of difference to any of the felines that reside here.
