The chameleons turned to see the vampires approaching them and froze, not knowing what to do. After the first two questions, the tense silence was broken by a laugh. "That's always the first question." One of the teens came forward. "No, we can't change colors. We could transform into lizards if we wore a shapeshifter's pattern, but that's the only time." The others nodded. "Is there anything else you want to know? We'd be happy to tell you."

From the silence of the invisible curtain, Cal watched the interaction. Despite his anger at the vampires, he was glad they were communicating. He was especially glad that the chameleons didn't run in fear- something they would have done just that morning. They were gaining confidence.
