On my first reading, I was moved by Antonia's struggling father, and the 'tragic' love story between her and the boy who becomes a big city businessman.
On my second reading, I think the narrator liked to both romanticize and belittle small-town prosperity, trying to cover up Antonia's happiness, independence and success.
