I also looked it up, and it should work without locking the screen.
Also; EEVEE! I need one! Gonna make it a Vaporeon, my fave <3 And I will probably also just have a cutesy team of Pokémon! Like, Eevee (Vaporeon), Chansey, Growlithe... Will see what else, I like to have different types to vary in battle with. :)
