Nectar in a Sieve, by Kamala Markandaya.

It's short, but good. She writes from the perspective of a rural Indian woman, as the village starts changing from rural agrarian to more mechanized society. It's fascinating and sad, as well as culturally interesting. It's also very fascinating to see how white visitors (a doctor, in this case) are viewed from the other side, as it were.
