Quote:
[The Perilous Realm] is wide and deep and high and filled with many things: all manner of beasts and birds are found there; shoreless seas and stars uncounted; beauty that is an enchantment, and an ever present peril; both joy and sorrow as sharp as swords. In that realm a man may, perhaps count himself fortunate to have wandered, but its very richness and strangeness tie the tongue of a traveler who would report them. --On Fairy Stories by J.R.R.T.
|
In the 5th Age, the Realm had finally found peace, but it never could last long in a place where so many different creatures of great beauty and great terror lived. It had been over 100 years in the Realm since a sword had last been raised in anger, when the Elf Lord, Donovair, began his war. He felt the last safe haven had been in danger due to the ever growing cities of Man. The dwarves had gone back into their mountains in a last attempt to preserve their peoples as well. Fae all over the realm were bent only towards the task of creating strongholds for their species. Donovair thought he could gain more territory for his people, but his whole city fell. Now the elves are scattered through the realm, owing allegiance to no one. Dwarves, fearing the same could happen to their own cities, came out of hiding and started to once again trade goods with Man. The other Fae still mistrust Man, but occasionally interact with them when the need arises.
However the Magic of the natural world has begun to fail. A darker magic of Machines is growing in the east and slowly spreads to all the peoples. The Fae are slowly dying out because of its corrupt nature.
But many Fae have learned to embrace the magic, Elves like Donovair, see it as the salvation of their people. Once again the Perilous Realm is divided in war. Creatures of all types fight for each side; some massing in armies, others only creating mischief in their own communities.
Our story begins in a small village, Cannor. The Lord of this Village has chosen the side of Dark magic and many in Cannor feel it will be the death of many of their people, elves, fairies, dwarves, nymphs (the list could go forever) will be killed by his magic, but the humans could be saved.
----------
Name:: Lorian
Species:: Elf
Weapon:: a Long bow and sword
Past:: She is the great granddaughter of Donovair. Recognizing the folly of her grandfather's past war, she has abandonned her people to start a new life. She lives on the outskirts of Cannor and is a Healer of sorts. Using her own natural magic, she is able to bring peace and comfort to those who need it most. With the presence of the Machine Magic though, she has noticed her power fading away and turns to the people of the village for help.

Lorian stood by the river that ran past the the village. She was cleaning some of the last crops of this years harvest and enjoying what could be the last warm rays of summer, when a shape blotted out the sky.
She looked up to see the mechanical birds the Lord of her village had made to spy on his people. A shudder ran through her body. Those machines ran on the magic of the land, and stole from those creatures who needed it most. She looked back to the vegitables she had been cleaning and back to the river. She saw the corpses of two young fairies floating down stream. She had seen them playing further up the river when she had come down from the field just hours ago. She cursed the machines and all who made them, she went out into the river to fetch the small bodies and laid them in a bed of reeds on the river bed. It was an activity she found all to common these days. She returned to her work then, there was nothing else she could do.

Ember gazed at the sky, how could the sun shine so bright and the clouds be so white when her own world was so dark and black. Tired she desided to rest on the bank of the river and let the cool water wash away all of her worries. Water clean water was beautiful water was life, she envied water, and all who could posses its power.
She gazed again at the sky hoping for a sign, or someone to jump out of the bush and yell 'fooled ya' and it would all go back to normal but that is now possible.
"Madge was right." she sighed "Dam her for being right"

Lorian stopped her work. She was sure she had just heard a noise by the river bank, just down steam of where she stood. She carefully put down the basket she was holding with all her clean veggies, and krept down the bank as quietly as she could. As she approached the river bank, she saw a fairy laying there. She immediately assumed it was another casualty of the spy birds that had just flown overhead, but then she saw the fairy breathing.
"Hello... are you alright over there?"

Name:: Crabana ’Ana’ Telepse
Species:: Originally Half elf, half human…now…
Weapon:: Twin Chakram worn on her hips and blades she produces from her flesh and bone… among other things.
Past:: Ana was named by her human father using the language of her mother, though he didn‘t know what the words meant…only that they sounded right to him somehow. What happened to her elven mother her father never said, though honestly they had difficulty talking about anything emotional. Her father was a very private person, though they got along well enough all things considered. One day she disappeared while out hunting for her father and her’s next meal, kidnapped by an unknown man… Now she has returned for reasons of her own…

*got lazy and found one xD... the redness is bruises from some rough treatmentbut it's cleared up now XD...
Ana had been walking into the town to buy supplies when she heard a noise… a voice. She would step off from the main path, those strangely metallic silver eyes sweeping over the Fairy and the elf. For a moment she would just watch them, her hands in the pockets of her pants and her hood still over her face. They were both pretty… and had decent magical strength she observed absently.

Having recieved no answer from the fairy, Lorian completed the last few steps that brought her to the fairy's side. She realized the fairy was definetly breathing, and was not even sleeping, just laying there enjoying the sun and water.
"Hello, friend. How are you enjoying your sunshine? You know the world is hardly safe to be doing so anymore dont you?" She felt a sift in the wind at her back and turned to see a person standing just off the path. For the moment the person was staying put, just watching And let them watch even if they are just a spy she thought to herself for she never had seen them before. No need to start a fight when none is needed. Many new people had been seen in the area and many of them were up to no good. Lorian stayed wary of strangers but saw no point in being openly rude with them.

Name: Llyn Nyx
Species: Phoenix (he can die, but is usually reborn...however there is a limit to how many times this can happen outside of his homeland before he ceases to exist. The exact number is unknown.)
Weapon: Control over the flames of destruction and rebirth. Such fire can be used to destroy or to heal.
Past: He was banished from his homeland for wanting to interfere with the affairs of humans. With the intent of trying to stop the humans and help the magical creatures of the realm. However, even in human guise, someone recognized him as a magical creature. Llyn was captured and held prisoner for a long time, his magic would be drained from him and he would burst into flames and be reborn from his ashes. The humans saw him as an unending source of power. Three times they did this to him, and despite his unwillingness to outright harm the humans, he had to escape. They could not hold him when he set his mind to it and so he escaped.

Llyn wasn't sure how long he had been running, but honestly he didn't care. He had to put as much distance between himself and them he wore only a long shirt that barely came down to his knees..he knew he would need better clothes. Llyn had been running through the center of the river and when he heard the mechanical birds fly over head, he dove down into the water quickly with a light splash. Letting the current carry him a bit further down stream. Soon he popped his head up for a breath of air, and stood. The river didn't seem to be too deep, he froze. There were people here..three of them at least. Llyn took a step back and slipped, fall backwards into the water. He flailed some and came back up sputtering and coughing.

Ana sighed as she watched the group, her gloved hand touching her hip as she watched the group of three and the sputtering boy. One of her gloves covered even her fingers by the other was fingerless to show pale, deceptively human slender fingers. She would walk over then, taking that soft, warm human hand and hitting the man’s back gently to knock out the water. “Careful…” She’d say quietly in a silk voice, the cyborg having a distinctively magical air… it was her elven’s half magic that the machine part of her fed off of… effecting none but her, but still painful for the Halfling who took more from her elven side then her humans…

Lorian turned away from the small fairy on the bank, which was obviously in some deep metitative trance and had no intention of responding to her, and looked up the bank to where the boy had spluttered in the water. "Are you alright down there?" She called back up stream to him. Another Stranger... Im meeting far too manyh of them near this stream today, and the birds were here too. I think that may be a sign of trouble which was vertainly something she did not need. She walked back up the bank to where she had left her veggies laying, and small rabbit was happily helping himself to some. She shooed him off and loaded the cleaned ones and still dirty ones up in the two baskets she had brought. No sense trying to finish them now. A cool breeze blew across the water as she stood back up. The harvest season was already drawing to a close, as the last crops in her basket reminded her. It wont do to let that fellow wander around in wet clothing tonight, granted... he isnt wearing much of it... She decided to invite both strangers to her home in the village. It would also give her a chance to see if they could be counted as friends or not.
"Well dont sit there all day spluttering. Come on up here and come back to my village. I can get you some decent clothing and a meal too if you like." She had noticed for people who were travelling through the area, the boy had no supplies, and the woman, unless she had left hers up by the path, also carried very little in the way of food or clothing. But at least she had the sense to travel armed Lorian had also seen the twin Chakram worn on her hips.

Llyn coughed and spluttered again when that woman gently hit his back to help knock the water out. It also caused him to jump slightly and turn to look at her for a moment. Blinking at her for a few moments as he studied her carefully. There was something odd about that woman. As that cool breeze blew across the water, Llyn shivered almost violently for a moment, his teeth chattering lightly. He hated being cold. Those arms wrapped around his torso and he frowned deeply. When the other invited them to come with her to the village he looked at her, seeming hesitant to accept the offer. "..Uhm.."
He shivered again and his stomach did growl lightly. The offer of a meal did sound nice. At the mention of decent clothing, he looked down at himself and blushed lightly in embarrasment. "..I...uh...can explain?" he offered a bit uncertainly. Slowly though he began to make his way towards the hospitable elf. Shivering every now and again.

((Nope, we’re like the mafia XD every time you think you get away we pull you back in :P))
Ana adjusted her sorely light pack, very little contained in it as she’d used up what little supplies she’d manage to get in the last town. A child had been falling and without thinking she’d reached out to catch it…with her left all metal arm. Her glove had torn revealing the silver colored metal beneath and the child had whimpered at how cold and hard her arm was….Needless to say THAT was the end of that town visit… she was lucky to escape with both her life and without having to do permanent damage to anyone…
Now with her glove repaired she had intended to go to the town anyway so simply smiled beneath her hood, not that anyone could see it, and yawned. “…such a kind offer, I will of course accept” She’d say to the elf with a playfully formal and flourishing bow. She was aware as the other studied her but said nothing, having only intended to help . Feeling him shiver she’d sigh, she didn’t have a lot of cloths as she didn’t’ sweat and the metal made it so she felt constantly cold no matter what she did…
As he spoke she’d shrug her shoulders gently, reaching over to pat his shoulder with her warmish, still blood through her veins, hand and leaving that metal one relaxed at her side as always. “It doesn’t matter… your past is your business… lets just get you some cloths.” She’d say in a quiet, slightly reassuring tone.

Lorian checked the river bank to make sure she hadnt left any of her veggies behind, it was going to be a hard enough winter as things stood now, no sense in starving too. She watched her new companions carefully as they were coming to join her. The girl may not care about his past, but I do. She could tell these people had something about themselves to hide Most people these days have something to hide. Especially if there is more to them than what they appear to be.
Lorian knew if you were a creature of magic, the best thing to do for yourself was hide it. She had once thought about concealing the fact that she was an elf, but the use of a concealment charm that powerful would drain her magical essence very quickly, and she would never be able to maintain it for long. The only alternative would be to cut her ears... but that would not be comfortable or respectable for an elf to do. But she knew others could hide their true selves very easily. And based on the true nature of a being, that could determine if they were friend of foe very easily. Lorian never trusted anyone until she knew for sure what they were, and where they came from and why.
I will let him get warm, get comfortable and then I will ask him how he came to be in such a state.

Llyn was frowning some. He should probably just run off and leave these people to their own business..but the mention of food..that made him hesitant to leave them just yet. He shivered again, water dripping from his body. He hated being cold, he was a creature of fire and warmth. Being cold was just a terrible thing. At least he wasn't strapped to some cold metal table with his magic being absorbed by strange and painful machinery. He flinched at that thought, and rather quickly pushed it away. He was hesitant, a bit cautious as he stepped closer to the elf. Glancing over his shoulder to the other woman for a moment.
Those dull reddish brown eyes of his swept over the rest of his surroundings. Truth be told, Llyn felt like a beaten, tired dog. It took effort to hold his head up, and he imagined if he had a tail it would be curled between his legs. He shook his head slightly and stumbled. "..Ahh.." He put his arms out to protect his face and head as he fell towards the ground.

((you should get on aim xD.))
Ana felt something was unsaid in the other woman’s silence but she said nothing, letting it stay as it was. She saw no reason to break the silence, having nothing to say. It would simply invite questions she didn’t need… She started to follow her foreward, wondering what theboy would say when he started to fall. Turning she’d sweep towards him the agility of a cat and put her normal arm around the front of his chest in a scooping motion to catch him. She left the other arm at her side this time, still sensitive of it after the incident she’d just only left behind.
“…be careful” She’d say quietly, in that stately, cautious voice of hers as she supported him. It was funny.. With such a woodsy background she would have such an elegant sounding voice but she did… in such a contrast to what she was she always thought with a slightly bitter note. “….if you need help I will try to support you… just avoid my other arm. I..hurt it recently.” She’d add in a slow, musing tone.

Lorian turned when she had heard the boy make a noise. She had seen the other woman catch him and tellhim to be careful of her other arm. She too felt like there was much left being unsaid. Her arm does not look injured. How strange. She watched the woman support the boy though.
"If you all are going to be my dinner guests, I should probably introduce myself, I am Lorian. I will warn you, the village I live in is not of elven-kind. I live in a human village, but they are elf-friends, so I trust them. They took me in when my own kind wouldnt. You can trust them. And now that you know a bit about me, may I ask your names?"
((I think I should say Lorian's people will not accept her now because it was her father's war with man that brought on the destruction of the greatest Elf city. And it was Man who had originally created the Machine. Lorian lives with Man though because she did not believe in her father's cause, and she has a dark secret that involves betrayal that I hope will come out later in the story.))

Ana glanced up, still cradling the boy with her other arm in silence. She saw no harm in responding…though ‘elf friends’ made her suppress a bitter laugh. Yes… everyone loved a full blood elf, though few were friends to mongrels like her. Her father had always told her that he raised her in the woods because he wanted her to be close to nature, but they both knew the truth… her half blood status provoked reactions of extreme by nature. The elves saw her as lesser and looked down at her, the humans saw her as something stronger so something to be used.. But never trusted…a freak to both sides. The war, stirring up so much passion, had not helped matters.
Still she simply smiled beneath her hood and slowly nodded, half bowing her head in a regal fashion. “My name is Crabana..but I prefer Ana or Craya…” She said quietly, watching her a moment. She was curious why she offered help so willingly.. And honestly did not trust her by instinct. Then again.. Full bloods reminded her of a prideful elven warrior whom she had once met when selling some furs .. Arrogant and young, but powerful and of royal blood he had easily sensed her elf half and when she dared talk to him without any particular embellishments… he’d promptly spat in her face.
She tried to not let it color her view, even of this beautiful blond princess elf, but she could not avoid it. Suppressing a sigh she’d glance up, as if hearing a sound. A winged shape in the sky could be seen, to far over head to actually be deciphered though it seemed…dragon like. She would nod at the shape, acknowledging the ancient trapped beast.
“What are you doing there young one?” grumbled the tiny dragon telepathically, returning from his hunt as he flew above them in swooping circles. “You’ll get in trouble again…” He continued, the sun glittering off the beautiful gold and white scales that made up his hide. It was mainly white with gold markings and a single gold strip down his back as well as gold horns and claws. He was about one and a half feet long, with a wing span of about four feet long, just about the size of a large owl.
“Oh do not worry old one… I am simply getting dinner…” The silver eyed woman responded telepathically, the dragon having established a link with her long ago. Despite his grumpy nature he was rather attached to her. He felt her a kindred soul and wished to protect her... best as such a tiny creature could. She turned back then to the man she was cradling in her arms, supressing a sigh. She was a little worried about him honestly.
“Free? There is no such thing as a free meal my lady…”
“I know I know… but this boy can’t even walk on his own so I can hardly leave… my father raised me better then that…”
“..such a foolish girl, You’re good heart will get you killed…”
“It freed you so be grateful old man…”

"..Please.." He had mummbled when the woman caught him. Sounding as if he were far away for a moment. Then those eyes blinked as he looked to her he seemed uncertain. "..I.." Llyn let the sentance drop before he had even spoken it. Sighing softly. His gaze drifted from the half elf to the full elf when she spoke. She was introducing herself..Lorian it would seem..and she lived in a human village.
Llyn's eyes widened, wild with fear and all color had drained from his face. He inhaled and exhaled quickly, his heart beating so fast in his chest. He wriggled a bit, as Crabana still held him with her arm, trying to get away from both elf and half elf. A whimper escaped him as he pulled free from Crabana and staggered backwards a few steps. Those arms reaching up and wrapping around his torso. He shivered violently. "..No.." So much pain they had put him through..such cruelty. "...Humans are..they are monsters.." If he'd had the strength he would have turned and ran, as it was, all he could do was drop to his knees and tremble.

Pity flickered through Ana as she watched him, tilting her head to the side sadly. It was funny… how that little head tilt seemed to indicate her curiosity and pity even beneath her hood which she had still not removed. “Not all are… my father was human after all” She’d say quietly, only to shake her head. “But I doubt….that I can convince you being half myself” reaching into her bag she’d take out a spare pair of black pants and a matching long sleeved top, for once grateful she wasn’t you’re usual ‘girl’ and preferred pants though due to her… ample chest her shirts would be big on him.
“They’ll be long for you since you’re shorter then me…” She observed quietly, glancing at the boy. He was probably around 5’6, 5’7 at the tallest and she herself was six feet even. Setting them down on a warm dry rock she’d turn, gently picking him up even if he squirmed only to set him down by the rock and step back. “so you can get dressed… though I will have to go get food I can’t leave you to freeze to death…” She said quietly, her back to him as she turned to look towards the path and frowned in thought. Perhaps if she’d been some one else.. Someone who trusted others she could do a better job of trying to convince him.

Lorian had watched this whole exchance and finally she could watch no more. She set down the basket with the veggies in it and went back to where the boy was.
"I understand your fear of them. Many humans are cruel. I promise you these are different. Do you remember the elf/human wars several years back, before the machines came?" Her eyes were no longer looking at the boy as she spoke. It was as if she were somewhere else.
"My Father, Donovair, was the start of that war. He got greed into his heart and angered the human cities around us by trying to steal their lands from them for elven kind. He believed that humans should be exterminated if our peoples were to be safe. He had all the half breeds in our own city destroyed. My love--..." She choked on a sob, seeing it all again and she shivered. "I helped most of them out of the city one night and killed the Guard of the Gate to do it. I betrayed my father, and my people. Once the half-breeds were out, I told the general of the human army camped at our gates that the Main Gate was left unguarded for at least 2 more hours until the morning guard came on. They invaded the city. Many of my people were slain. I escaped with my life all to happily. But I am a traitor."
Her eyes finally returned to the present. "I live in the village with my half human son, Islandur. His grandmother is who took us in. She loves me as her own daughter even though I am elf. If you feel you can not trust her because she is human, I understand. But she has also suffered much so I would ask you to give her a chance."

Llyn was silent as Crabana spoke quietly, watching almost curiously as she pulled out some clothing. When she picked him up he did squirm a bit, but not really to wildly. When she set him down and told him to put those clothes on he blinked dumbly for a minute. "..But.." He let that small protest drop. Reaching out and poking the clothing once or twice before he looked at Lorian. He was very silent, listening intently to her words it would seem. As he listened to her he quickly rid himself of that long, wet shirt and tossed it aside and slipped into the clothes Crabana had laid out for him. Just being in clean clothes made him feel all the much better.
Slowly he stepped out from behind the rock, chewing his bottom lip as he looked to Lorian. "No...You are not a traitor. Your father betrayed you all by causing such a foolish war. You did what you needed to survive..." He had wrapped his arms around his torso again. His words had been soft and voice just a light whisper as if he were afraid to speak any louder than that. "...I....I will go with you to your village..." He trembled lightly. It was wrong, he knew, to judge all people based on the actions a few. Just because some were bad did not necessarily mean that all were bad. Still, he couldn't help but be a little bit afraid.

((*pounces* hello kry you should get on aimmmm ))
As she spoke of her adoptive mother Ana half smiled to herself, unable to keep from enjoying it a little. It was sweet… and reminded her of her father. She had not been able to journey home yet… and she’d gathered her father thought she was dead when she was taken from some whispers she’d heard. She could hardly blame him, there had been so much blood and her back left behind…
When Llyn said but she glanced over her shoulder, about to say something only to see him start to redress so she politely looked away. She knew it’d be baggy on him but it was one of her tighter shirts so shouldn’t be too bad. Smiling to herself she’d nod, looking forward as she listened to the two speak. By the legal definition Lorian was traitor.. But she’d watched out for a group that no one else cared for so had Ana’s approval. Exterminating haflings.. She’d known of a few human men like that and one who wished to use them as experiment subjects, to know it existed among elves to did not surprise her but did sadden her.
“that is… wise Llyn. You will be safe…” She said it in the tone of a promise, patting llyn’s shoulder reassuringly. Now that she’d said it, it would be so. Such was the type of person she was…. If she made a promise she would keep it. If she reassured someone something would be so… she would do every thing in her power to MAKE it so. Looking to Lorian she would say quietly “That is… tragic, but it seems you have a second chance m‘lady…. And giving us quite a chance too. I suspect he could use a meal and will learn of your grandmother best through that…” She said quietly, nodding towards Llyn to indicate him.

Lorian nodded at the two, acknowledging both of their statements. She turned and gathered her two baskets and walked on. It was only a short distance to the village and she did not pay much attention on the quick journey there. Her thoughts were consumed with the past. She had never gotten over it, probably never could get over it. The woman, Crabana, had insisted on calling her "m'lady" knowing full well who Lorian was. She had turned from that life though, and had tried to leave it completely behind. The only reminder she had was her son and even now it hurt her to look at him most days. His face was too much like his fathers.
A tear dropped from her face and onto the dusty road at her feet at they arrived at the main gate of the village. She waved absently too the two men who were on lookout that day and they did not question her choice of companions that day. She wiped her eyes absently as she arrived at the door of her home, the home furthest on the out skirts of the village.
She turned to her companions and said, "Please feel welcomed here and rest easy, You will be safe as long as you are in my home." It was an old elven greeting of friendship, but the magic the phrase was filled with did offer a measure of protection to the guests the welcome was offered to and she thought it might make the boy espcially feel at ease.
She openned the door to find her son and his grandmother on the floor playing with sticks. The boy, only 2 years old, got up and tottered over to them. He began to reach for Llyn's shirt tales, that hung very low due to the shirts size.
"Oh no you dont" Lorian said setting down the baskets and scooping the baby up. She handed the boy back to his grandmother.
"Ellain, these guest will be staying with me for at least a little while." The old woman studied the two new comers with eyes that had seen much in her short years. Her face was gnarled and a scar ran from her hair line to her jaw bone on the left side.
"That is fine dear. They looked starved. I will set out some food as soon as I get Islandur settled away for his nap." Ellain left the room taking the baby with her.
Lorian turned to the boy, "You can see her hardships written on her face, she will not judge you nor harm you. Now lets get you a seat before you fall over."

Llyn was silent now. Nodding slightly to Crabana's reassurance that he would be safe before they began walking again. He walked close to Crabana, occasionally reaching out and grabbing her shoulder for balance. When they had reached the gate, he shrank back a bit as if trying to hide behind Crabana while keeping a wary eye on the men that guarded the gate. As they followed Lorian to her home, Llyn seemed to keep himself very close to Crabana's side. Those eyes dancing this way and that warily. He relaxed with a bit of relief when they reached Lorian's home.
His expression seemed to brighten some when he looked at the child. When the boy came towards him, he would have patted him gently on the top of the head but Lorian had scooped him up a bit too quickly. Then again, with a small child a mother often needed to be quick. Llyn nodded politely to the old woman, but he remained silent. Watching her as she left the room, taking the toddler with her. Llyn chewed his bottom lip some, nodding slightly to Lorian when she mentioned a seat for him to sit on.

Ana had said M’lady out of habit, her father was a woodsmen and yet very gentlemanly so had always treated women with very formal respect.. He’d even tried to raise Ana as a little lady like her elven mother but the tomboy would have none of it. When he sent her to buy a dress and she brought home a sword he had finally given up and let her ‘be a boy’ as the other men always taunted him with.
She didn’t even realize she said it and only reacted as she realized how close Llyn was standing to her. She would glance over and nod in a habitual sort of way as he grabbed her shoulder, occasionally reaching out to steady him if necessary. She made sure to keep him on the side of her flesh and blood shoulder of course, each and every step.
Once they had arrived at the home she’d smile at the small boy, knowing he was in for a ruff future… though as a man it would likely be less hard on him. The presence of a uterous made women half breeds even more dangerous in the eyes of men….Still she knew his future would be difficult and somehow that made his innocence even more cute to her…
“M’lady, Ellain, please call me when you have, I would like to help. I am already intruding on you so much it is the elast I could do…”She’d call softly after the older woman, her voice its same silky respectful tone she had used towards Lorian. She did not know how to deal with other woman save this formal way…..men were easier….
