- The Setting -
Sometimes things go missing. Sure, maybe you dropped it on the way to the door. Or perhaps someone took it. In a time when magic is non-existent, it is difficult for most people to imagine tiny tricksters that will steal anything they can get their hands on. Honestly, the people who do mention it are considered crazy for seeing "faeries" or "sprites."
Most of us are pretty good at what we do. We aren't seen, we get what we want, and no one knows who did the taking. Being small and quiet can have its advantages.
- The Characters -

- The Story -
"No, no. The one on the left!"
Liam shifted his hold on the makeshift lifeline that he held on to for dear life. Slowly leaning farther to the left, he reached out to point at a glittering earring. "This one?" This was always the roughest part of the day. His sister just couldn't stand it when he protested against the jewelry run.
"Over more!"
Liam's dark brown eyes darted over to his sister in exasperation. She was standing near the bottom of the jewelry box and was watching him anxiously. It wasn't for his sense of well-being, either. Kayren just really wanted the earring. She was the definition of a wordly, materialistic girl.
Carefully leaning over again, Liam shook dark hair from his face. He was sure to wrap the necklace's chain about his wrist so he didn't fall away from his "lifeline." At last he touched the sparkling purple gem that Kayren had been eying.
"That's it! Now bring it down!"
This was the hard part. Not only was he placed precariously and about to fall, but Liam also was now inclined to pull the stud from its place in the earring rack. Granted, it seemed a bit loose. . . .
With a grunt of exertion, the male yanked the gem free from its holdings. The stud easily slid under his arm, and Kayren swiftly found the backing that had popped free when Liam had tugged.
When he was finally standing beside Kayren again, Liam handed her the sparkling earring with a half smile on his lips. While his sister preferred the material gain, Liam enjoyed the adventure. He loved looking at the belongings that humans hoarded; he loved knowing that if he was caught his life could be in danger. It was all part of the thrill.
"We should head back now," Kayren said, finally looking up from her inspection of the new prize. "I don't want the tall one coming back while we're standing here." At least Kayren moved quickly.
Liam sighed, sending one last look to the open jewelry box. It had been left that way by the human, so it would stay that way now. As they headed back to their shelter within the house, Liam couldn't help but feel discontent. He wanted more adventure. It was about time they got some, too. Stealing earrings wasn't exactly the best thrill in the world, even if he had to climb up through a tangle of necklaces to get them. Perhaps someday soon he would have a bit of fun.
