Okay, So I was wondering why people like horror?
It's not that I specifically hate it but I strongly dislike the whole, Holy [bleep] pee my pants, kind of moments.
So could some of you give examples as to why you like horror, what feelings do you want it to cause you, lasting fear, discomfort, paranoia, suspense, surprise, what?
For me, I like suspense, romance, action and comedy. I like these because the intrigue me, they woo me, they put me on the edge of my seat, they get me rooting for someone or something, they make me laugh, they make me feel good!
I just do not understand why you would want to be horrified.
I understand that it kind of gives you the same awesome feelings a roller coaster does...but roller coasters do not instill deep, earth shattering horror in us. Okay for some, like meit does..but we won't go into that.
So yeah, go into it. Long threads, huge explanations, I'll read em all, and respond after a few days. Wow me, convince me get a conversation going :P

I actually DON'T like horror xD
But I'd still watch it if I wanted to. If I were to watch one with a close friend or someone else then okay, why not?
It depends on the person I would say. Personal preferences?
I don't like horror, I prefer comedy because I like laughing xD Thrillers are good too.
EDIT: I watched a bunch of thrillers in my French classes last year, my teacher brought them in for us as treats xD
They weren't that good tbh, but one of them was alright but I cannot remember it's name. They were all in French though.

I love horror. I love getting shivers up my spine, goosebumps and the fear of 'are they going to make it out alive?' Which, in the best of horrors, they don't ^.^ The paranoia, thrill, they're feelings I don't get in everyday life, and ones I'd rather not put my life in danger to experience.
I also like romance, and thrillers, comedies and the like. But theres something about a horror movie, not knowing who you can trust, or whats just around the corner that speaks to a primal part of my psyche. But everyones different. I hate trying to convince people to watch horrors, you either like them or you dont, so whatevs. *shrugs*

I love horror, mainly when it involves some unearthly creatures and such. I just freakin' adore all the scary, slimy, bloody, rotten things that creep in the shadows. I'm also broken and have this thing for fatal attraction. >>
But mainly, my love for such horror falls into Silent Hill. And speaking off, there are only 9 days till the next one~
I think it's the most beautiful thing ever, shadows and creepy things. But other people are terrified.
I just love monsters and creatures~

I never fully understood how people can watch Saw or a very gory horror film. It's just absolutely terrifying to me and disturbing in a terrible way! Seeing someone being burned alive or cut in half.. I just.. I don't know. I also can't deal with screams of being slaughtered or tortured slowly type of deal.
The only horror film I've seen was Dawn of the Dead and that just fed my fear of zombies to the extreme. I didn't want to see it, but while waiting in line for a local haunt, they decided it'd be fantastic to play. It was pretty.. horrifying and gave me nightmares for weeks.
I just can't do it. I love reading about horror films but I can't watch them. I'll just die and shrivel up.

I love gore, horror and suspense filled movies. The ones made today are yes, extremely stupid and nothing but bloody porn. I have yet to see a horror movie in the last 5 years that has scared me or even come close to me being scared. - . -
Horror movies in the 60s - 80s were the prime time for them in my opinion, movies like The Night of the Living Dead, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Carnival of Souls, and they had great actors like Vincent Price.
I don't think anyone can really convince you, if you don't like them you're probably not going to start liking them.

Well... if Larele: is any sort of example... she thinks they're hilarious.
Watched Jeepers Creepers 2 with her once... it's a lot easier to watch horror when you're distracted by your friend laughing their head off XD

I love the feeling of my heart pounding, sitting on the edge of my seat, staring at the screen. Then covering my eyes with my hands because I can't look anymore. It also gives me an excuse to cuddle.

I watch it for only one reason really... to see things on the screen that are not real. like zombies and vampires and psychotic people with twisted mind etc. The vague explanation of the unknown, and the faces of the undead. My mind is at ease for it knows it is all fake but still it is interested to know the fantasy and mystery of the hidden worlds :) Horror movies dont scare me, they increase my curiosity about the worlds beyond this one :) and boosts my imagination.

I agree with the horror lovers!! I don't find horror to be scary anymore, they never really have scared me. That doesn't mean they can't be truly disturbing though... like The Human Centipede movies!! XD Gah, I love those. There's something about being that grossed out, or just plain horrified that some of this stuff actually can, or has happened. I personally loved the Saw series, but I know a lot of people didn't really care for it. Whatevs, I watch all different genre's of movies, owning over 400 movies myself it takes all different kinds to get there, and I've always been a huge movie buff.
Though, horror is my favorite genre, The Hellraiser series is one of my all time favorites, because they were disturbing, and also rather cheesy! Cheese factor is another huge reason I love some horror flicks.... Like Thankskilling, literally, a hand puppet of a turkey that goes around killing people... it's HILARIOUS, but it's a horror film, I mean, it's just perfect!! XDD

I LOVE horror movies!
But the movies to me don't scare me unless it's the ghost ones like Sliced (a movie about a ghost women who slits the mouths of anyone who comes near her with scissors, look up Slit-Mouthed Woman) or ones that really touch on my mind.
Other than that, I mostly just watch them because I grew up with them. So most don't scare me too much.
It's Creepypastas that really get to me...but that's a same/difference thing (look it up on google if you don't know about them). Oh, and scary stories.
I will mostly watch them for the gore and seeing the victims scream in idiotic terror as the villain gets them. I just love seeing when people are dumb about a curse/murderer on the loose and in the end get killed because of it.
But I get really excited then I see the ones where they have a twist or surprise ending to them, because it's just surprising to see that what you thought might've been wrong from the beginning.
But other than that, I just like em because I'm demented and LOVE the gore and splatter that happens in them.

I like horror but its not really about the gore for me, it is the thrill and that weird feeling of being scared. When I watch movies with friends it's fun because we see if maybe we could make it through the movie or not XD it's like when you go to hunted house for Halloween. But when I watch them alone I'm very intrigued to see how a human can act and be twisted...just watching human nature but I do get scared lol.

I like horror movies, but I am very much a wimp when it comes to them.
Seriously, the Scary Movie series (which is a parody, if you've never seen them) scared me enough to have to watch it with the lights on.
It's kinda fun to be scared, though. At least, for me, it's fun when it first happens. When the fear lingers long enough to make it difficult to sleep or go into the dark or use the bathroom or walk past a mirror, then I start regretting it terribly.
I'm especially afraid of ghosts, too. Serial killers, psycho murderers, they don't really scare me because I can lock the doors and have some peace of mind. Ghosts scare me because you can't hide from them, they're especially tied to mirrors and darkness (which are everywhere in my house), and it's sooo easy to think that you saw something out of the corner of your eye. Or that there's something behind that untouched object suddenly falling over. For me, there's more to fuel the paranoia.
:P Which is why I both love and hate ghost movies or creepypastas.

I love horror movies.
They're a safe way for me to work through my anxiety.
But I also generally enjoy the topics explored with some horror. Like cannibalism. It's a topic that fascinates me more than I should care to admit. The mind of a serial killer? I want to know more! Zombies? What sort of survival techniques will be used? How does society function without government, in smaller groups? Civil war without feeling empathy for the other side? Count me in! And vampires! How do they survive undetected and maintain their food supply (us)? Unless you're looking at slasher fics, for the most part, there are some really interested topics within the horror genre. To me at least. I get a little too happy talking about them apparently. I seem to scare people. o-o

Ok being a very avid horror fan I get this question alot and so I have gave it alot of thought as to why I love horror films so much and I cannot speak for why anyone else enjoys horror films but this is my reasons, I am a very easy going passive person but I do have somewhat of a anger issue sometimes but I have no way to express it the way I want to so watching someone get hacked up when I'm angry at someone or something makes me feel better. I also enjoy it because it is more mysterious then any other kinda movie most movies have happy endings where the good guys always win but in horror films it keeps you guessing almost everyone could survive or no one could survive or just one or 2 people could survive. I like the fact that they it makes movies more real because sometimes the bad guys win end of story and I like that dose of reality keeps me on my toes. It also helps me be aware of the dangers out in the world because alot of stuff in horror films actually happens and it kinda tells you what to watch out for to prevent it in my opinion. I probally won't ever stop being a horror fan but I do understand why people are confused as to why I like it so much I do wonder though why people can watch shows like CSI and other crime shows and not get grossed out by them, but thats just me. hope this sheds some light.

I mainly don't watch to be horrified. I watch because I love watching the different story lines about monsters and ghosts and such. To me, it's pretty darn interesting and I find it fascinating. Same reason why I watch Ghost Hunters even though I know none of it is real.
Recently watched The Awakening. Loved it. I love how it started off as a horror movie but ended up kinda not a horror movie.

I love horror- I love good horror that provides a dark, provocative story about anything ranging from a monster, to the dark nether regions of the human psyche. I don't really get too scared by most of the horror that I like, usually I'm more fascinated. I guess mebbe I'm alittle bit morbid. However....I do NOT consider garbage like Hostel and Saw to be in the pantheon of horror. That is just....nonsense, it's just torture. That's all. Torture can be horrifying, but that's not what the horror genre is supposed to be. If you have ever read Lovecraft's work, you know he can make you petrified of something as simple as an unknown sound going off above or around you...or something unseen in the dark. Horror does not have to entail something vast and extravagantly outlandish, it can be something as simple as a door closing without anyone touching it or a strange animal lingering outside your window.

I absolutely adore horror films and the like. To me, there's something funny about the things most people find scary (which to me aren't) because they are poorly set up. Some things are completely ridiculous, while others are genuinely terrifying. I count the times where I'm seriously scared to be far and few between.
