Sounds of girls laughing filled the empty streets. "Come on Grey! Hurry up!" Two blond girls yelled back to the black haired boy. It was his birthday today and they wanted to buy him a new scarf. They saved up together to get all three of them new scarves. "Hey! Wait for me!" He called back, his arms were full with bags of fresh breads, vegetables and fruits. They were sent out to get food for dinner, yet he was the one stuck with all the bags while they ran ahead. The girl's came to the shop they wanted. The girl with short hair pointed to the teal scarf, her sister happily agreed with her choice. Then they picked out what they wanted. The one named Maria chosen a thinner matching teal headband instead of a scarf while her twin Carrie picked out the pink scarf. Before he rounded the corner they paid for them.
The girls hid the bag from his view the best they could. "What is that?" He questioned but the girls shook their head. "Nothing!" They yelled in union. He flinched at the sudden volume of their voice but let it go. "Hey Grey, are you still wanting to join the Garrison?" Maria asked softly. "I promised you I wouldn't." He told her, smiling at her happily. Maria and Grey plan to marry when they were older, she didn't want to worry daily as he risked his life. She felt guilty taking away his dream. She just held her cross as they walked back to the orphanage. Gray nearly dropped the bags of food when Maria placed the cross suddenly on him. He looked at the silver cross then to his friend. "Just in case you forget your promise. You'll always have a reminder that I'm waiting for you." She stated to his questionable look. "But you better not forget." She quickly added making him laugh lightly at her words.

When she heard laughter outside, a young blonde with brown eyes glanced outside the window of her mother's tailoring shop. She saw the faces of two girls and a boy that she recognized. Summer had never talked to them, but she had seen them around the town. She watched as they came in, purchased a few items from the shop and left. Her mother's shop was popular and it required a lot of work.
"They looked nice." Her mother's soft voice broke through Summer's thoughts. Her mother was a beautiful woman with soft ashy blonde hair and brilliant blue eyes, "Don't you know them, dear?"
Summer turned away from the shelf by the window she had been re-stocking and looked at her mother, "Not really. Just see them around is all." Summer sighed and went back to stocking the shelf with boots. She was much too reclusive to make friends. All she wanted was to join the Scouts and one day go beyond the wall. She had too much to prove and didn't want any friends to get in the way.
Just then, her older sister Savanna entered the room, "Don't you know, mother, Summer doesn't have friends." Her sister was teasing her. Both playfulness and meanness filled her silky voice. Savanna was the girly one. She always had men chasing her, always had a pretty smile painted on her face. She was looking extravagant in her lovely purple gown. Summer scowled at Savanna. The youngest sister was a little jealous of her sister's beauty, but not so much of her ambition. Savanna simply wished to take over the shop. Though she could easily marry a rich suitor, the middle sister did love her family and making clothes.
"Don't start you two." Mother's voice scolded, "You both are adults and this fighting is childish. I will have no more of it." She turned from Summer to Savanna, her eyes becoming more noticably soft, "Savanna, don't tease your sister. Not all of us can be social butterflies like you." She smiled softly and the conversation ended when another customer entered, bought a new dress, and left. The family went back to their regular routine. Mother minded the register, Savanna stitched away at fancy hats and gowns in the sewing room, and Summer simply cleaned and stocked the racks and shelves.. The younger sister had no wish to learn how to properly sew. Her only desire was to prove her worth by joining the Scouts, as her father did.

The boy set down the bags on the dark wooden table upon entering the orphanage's kitchen. Most the children were out playing in the meadow behind the place. Laughter filled the air as the three began to unpack the food. The house mother would soon want to start cooking the food, it required a lot of time and help to cook for all the children there. "I'll start washing the vegetables." Maria said grabbing the potatoes and carrots. Grey just watched her leave to watched the vegetables. Carrie was still holding the bag. She was just standing there quietly.
"Read any good books lately?" He asked her trying to break the silence. Carrie's face just lit up with excitement. "Oh yes. There is one I'm currently reading. Its about adventure and life outside of the wall. It details creatures like bunnies and deer. I want to see a deer one day, they sound adorable." Gray just placed up the bread and smiled, he doubted that they would ever see such creatures but it was nice to dream.
It was then as the two children spoke of the book and its wonder, a loud crashing sound filled the air. The ground shook violently. "Gray, what's happening?" The blond cried to her friend. He grabbed her and held her closed as the things fell off the shelf. Large boulders landed near the orphanage. The boy's eyes widen as he watched the smoke clear. Those were part of the wall! They lived close to the wall, so it was normal for parts to fall from time to time. However this was different. The ground shook more, stopped then again, repeating the process. "Maria!" He called out. Gray just ran to the doorway. He hoped that all was okay with her. Falling pieces of the wall was never a good thing.

As the day had continued to carry on as usual, sounds of screaming and what felt like an earthquake disturbed the peace. Summer's eyes grew wide as she watched panic outbreak outside the window. Some people were running, others were standing as fear radiated from them. "Mother, what's happening!?" Savanna ran from the sewing room and was now clinging to their mother like a small child.
"Something's happening outside.. The.. The wall! It..It's breaking!" Summer's voice now held the strong fear that had paralyzed all those around. She couldn't break herself from the window. Her eyes were wide with shock as she watched pieces of the wall breaking apart. Large pieces. More and more and more began crashing down, hitting houses and buildings. "We need to get away from here, mother! It's.. It's not safe!"
Just then, the door slammed open and another blonde came running in, "Mother, sisters, you must leave from here! Now!" The oldest sibling was breathing heavily as she stood in the doorway. Sweat was plastered on her face and her eyes were also filled with the same fear. Though her family had yet to see what was truly happening, Sierra had witnessed the giant titan. She was posted on the wall as a fill-in and abandoned her post to warn her family. She knew it was likely she would get punished, but that didn't matter. "They're breaking through!" Her voice was shaking as she spoke, nearly hysterical.

Fear gripped Grey violently, coldness pricked his skin slowly standing his hair on end. His eyes widened as he stared at the enormous humanoid like creature. His heart stopped seeing the creature lift someone in it's hand. "M-maria..." He manage to choke out in a low whisper. The blond girl he knew his whole life, the one he planned a life with was slowly being brought to the creature's mouth. He was helpless as the monster bit into his first love. Her blood rained from her half eaten corpse. He was frozen solid from the event that just played out.
Carries screams bought out an instinct within him. The titan faced the two orphans, without hesitation. Grey grabbed Carrie's hand and ran back into the house. The titan dropped what was left of Maria and went after the house. Grey grabbed the one year old from the floor and ran. Dragging Carrie's as she struggled to keep up with him. The infant was crying from fear as they ran passed all the fear struck villagers. He needed to get them to safety. The colder he got, the faster he pushed himself.
Grey just weaved through the crowded streets. Carrie was crying for him to slow down but he was refusing. He only had one thing on his mind; survival. He wouldn't let anything ever happen to Carrie, to the toddler in his arms. Today was about survival, he would do everything to make sure they did. Titans stomped hard hide them, people screams filling the air. Mixing with the toddler's and Carrie's. However Grey was unfeeling, ignoring the pain and suffering of others.

The family quickly ran from the home. Blood was splattered all over the streets and people were screaming, crying. Some crawling with bloody broken bodies after being struck with fragments from the wall. The sisters watched as a titan happily bit another man in half, his blood spraying over them. Savanna screamed, drawing the attention of three other titans. "Come on! Lets go!" Sierra cried as she grabbed Savanna by the hand and began to run. Summer and their mother trailed closely behind them. "They have boats in the canal, they will take us inside wall Rose!" Sierra was yelling through her breaths.
"I don't know if I can go on!" Savanna was gasping for air. Her gown was torn and blood covered her face. She was never very athletic and had no interest in learning skills that made her more capable of any physical feats. She wasn't strong, she couldn't run fast, and she had no idea how to fight. "I just can't.. I can't!"
"We have to, Savanna!" Mother was talking now as they moved. They were all breathless and tired by now. Fear had given them all adrenaline rushes, but their bodies still ached.
Suddenly a titan was looming overhead. There was just no outrunning the ferocious predator. It moved a bit faster than the others. "We won't make it! It's too fast!" Summer screamed, her heart racing and her lungs burning for air. Then the unthinkable happened. Their mother stopped, tears filling her blue eyes.
"I love you, my girls. Don't you ever forget that." The tears now spilled down her face, her eyes wide. "Now run! Go!" And with that, she ran towards the titan that was pursuing them. The titan stopped, the eerie wide mouth smile of all teeth opened as its huge hand grabbed up their mother. She screamed and struggled against the humanoid creature, but it was no use. A loud crack was heard and the titan chewed at their mother's body. Her blood spraying like rain.

Grey came to a stop, slamming Carrie into a wall without thinking after making it through the gate. They still had to run to get to the boats. He handed her the toddler. "Keep him quiet." He told Carrie. They need to catch their breath. "Hey! Listen to me!" He told the panicking girl. Her hands were trembling after he released one. He placed his hand on both her cheeks and force her to look at him. His eyes were cold, empty. "We'll have time to grieve for Maria later. Right now all panicking will do is get us killed." He told her calmly. Tears ran her blood splattered face. As they been running Grey had lead them down the streets avoiding the titans. However the victim's blood had rained down on them from time to time.
He sighed softly before releasing her face. He looked from the toddler to Carrie. She was out of breath and pale, so was he. He wasn't sure if she had the energy to make it to the boats. He did know that if they waited any longer they wouldn't have room for them. He took the toddler back into his arms. Once more he grabbed Carrie's hand and began running at full speed. As she struggled once more to keep up with him, she stared at him in awe. She always knew her friend was athletic, strong but this was a side of him she never seen. Was it adrenaline pushing him so hard to keep them alive?
Carrie tried her best to keep up with him, her legs were aching to the point they felt like they would fall off. Yet Grey seemed as if it was nothing to him. Her chest ached, felt like her froze the more she ran. She tried to control her breathing as she ran but nothing seemed to be working. Her tears blurred her vision as she continued to struggle. He was so fast. She was basically being dragged behind him still.

Savanna screamed for their mother, but there was nothing she could do. Sierra, the strongest of the three grabbed her two younger sibling's hands and pulled hard, forcing them to tear their teary gaze from the titan that was crunching on their mother's body. Tears were also running down Sierra's cheeks as she silently mourned for their mother. Her sisters were clinging to her hands as she pulled them through the streets. Sierra knew the shortcuts and routes usually taken by the garrison near the walls. Though she was afraid, she had seen the titans regularly when she was on the wall.
"The boats are up ahead! Keep running! We are almost there!" Sierra's yelled over the chaos. The sound of heavy thuds were in the distance for now. The titans were busy entertaining themselves with the unfortunate citizens that couldn't get away quick enough.
"Thank goodness.." Summer was out of breath and she could tell that her sister Savanna was struggling even more so. Unlike her sister, Summer was wearing leather pants and not a gown, which their mother had disliked. A lady should never wear pants. She would often say.
They finally made it to the boats. People were crowding on, shoving, and pushing at each other. It was complete chaos. Sierra elbowed her way through the crowds, using her military position to her advantage as she pulled her sisters along with her. Once they were safely aboard, the girls all leaned against the wall of the ship cabin, panting. Savanna melted, collasping to her knees as she blankly stared, her eyes seeing nothing. She was obviously in shock. Summer let silent tears fall as she stared out at the city. Smoke could be seen, but the titans still remained distant as they snacked on the remaining citizens. Sierra's teeth were gritted as angry tears fell. What good had she been? She felt like a coward at this point.

Grey pushed his way through the crowd, his grip tightening around Carrie's hand. She couldn't afford to get lost in this crowd. "Sorry kid. Boat can only hold two more." The operator said stopping Grey. With no hesitation Grey handed Carrie the toddler. "Then take them." He told the man, who just nodded and pushed the blond now holding the toddler on board. "Grey!" She called out to her friend. He just looked at her and smiled softly. He could at least protect Carrie and the boy.
"It's fine Carrie, at least you two will be safe." He told the blond as they pulled up the plank. He stood straight, unyielding to the chaos behind him. "Wait!" An elder's voice called out. The operators stop in their tracks hearing the voice. "If I give up my possessions, can the boy come aboard?" She asked the man, hopeful. She looked at Grey and smiled. The young boy was willing to sacrifice himself for two others without hesitation. There was something about him, something special. The elderly woman handed over her bag. It wasn't much but just enough for them to let Grey on. He bowed the best he could to the elderly women, given not much room. "Thank you." She patted his back and smiled. "One day, I will pay back your kindness." He meant his words. It was a promise he intended to keep even at the cost of his life.
The elderly woman kept the orphans with her. They were close to the railing. He watched as people pushed others over the edge into the canal. People jumping to reach the moving boats. Women crying for them to take their children. He held Carrie tightly as she buried her face into his shoulder, crying over today's events. She didn't want to see the chaos. The titans devouring the civilians as they scrambled to escape in the distance. He couldn't do anything for the screams she was forced to listen to, he could only hold her and be strong for both of them. That he would do. The elderly woman held the toddler trying to soothe him. He would become stronger, he would for them.

The boat the sisters were on began to move. It was moving too slow for anyone's liking. The titans had devoured all the civilians they managed to grab at the beginning of the city and were now further inside. Their heads could now be seen looming over the roofs. They were heading to the boats, their mouths watering as they realized hundreds of people were crammed together and made for easy pickings. People on board starting screaming once more when they saw how close the titans were getting.
The blonde siblings huddled together, praying they would soon be out of harms way. Whatever had happened today that broke the wall that stood for so long was such a terrifying thought. Could it happen to the next wall as well? And the one after that? What if there was no end and no way to ever be safe again? Summer wiped away a few tears, anger rising inside her. Her mother's death replaying in her mind. She could still her her scream. She would avenge her. She would avenge all those that had died today. She would avenge her father who died on the other side of the wall. As soon as she could, Summer would train to join the scouts. Though the titans were terrifying and seemingly impossible to kill, she would fight until she could find a way to slay them all.
Savanna remained trembling and her crying never ended, even when the boat was out of harm's way. Her light hair was plastered to her face from her tears, her eyes red and swollen. Summer felt sorry for her poor sister, she was much too delicate for this. The youngest sister then stood and released Savanna's hand. She glanced over at Sierra, her eyes still tear stained as well, "Sierra.. We will find a way." Her voice was full of anger, "We will find a way to kill them all."

The survivors were all placed into refugee like camps in the wall Rose. He elderly woman had gotten them a piece of bread. It was all they would get for the day. He just gave his to the toddler so the elderly woman could eat. Every other day he would eat half and give the rest to her or the toddler while he forced Carrie to eat all of her's so she could keep up her strength. Carrie had been holding the bag with the scarves when he had grabbed her. She now wore the pink one she picked out and he was wearing both the headband and the scarf they had picked for him as a birthday gift. When they were sending people over the wall, Grey stood up for the elderly woman. He offered to go in her placed but they just laughed at him. The Captain however found his spunk, his will to protect those around interesting and made him a deal. When of age, Grey was to join the military in return the elderly lady didn't have to go. He agree without hesitation, after all he was planning to join before hand.
A few years passed, Grey was preparing to go into the military when Carrie informed him that she too was joining. The elderly woman had cared for them since the canal. She came to love them as her own, as they did for her. She begged Carrie not to join but she refused to let Grey go in alone. Grey himself however was determined to keep his vows and promise. He would see the Captain he made the deal with at the wagons. In the years following up to this day, Grey trained with old manuals in fighting to prepare the best he could. He would often harass the guards on duty to help him or pick fights with them to test himself.
Both Carrie and Grey were dress in the military uniform. They were allowed to wear the scarves and the headband, which they did. "Well if it isn't the kid with the spunk." The Captain said, he was surprised the kid actually kept his word. Grey just sulated him properly which surprised the man more. Grey's eyes were much more fierce than a few years ago. The Captain just smiled at the boy. He had heard of him training and picking fights. Training for this day. He just waved the boy off, however he was surprised the blond joined with him. She clumsily sulated him, trying to mimic Grey. He just raised an eyebrow when he told them to get in the wagon. "Interesting boy." He said to the two behind him. He was looking forward to seeing what he had to offer the military.

The years after the attack were difficult for the sisters, but they had more advantages than most considering one was already a member of the military. Instead of always starving and desparately fighting for food, they were able to be guaranteed enough food everyday. It was still a small amount, but the guilt was still there as they watched the others beg for food and starve. Still, Summer couldn't bring herself to give up her rations. She needed to be strong. Strong enough for training when the day would come, strong enough to take on the titans. Sierra wasn't around very much, she was always on the wall now. With Wall Maria down, everyone was tense and nervous. If it happened once, it could easily happen again.
Savanna was not doing well at all. Fear had struck her heart and left its claws in her so deep that she still had nightmares. Even years after the attack, the middle sister would wake screaming drenched in sweat and calling for their mother. Summer would have to soothe her and cradle her until she went back to asleep. While Savanna would mostly sit and stare out the window of the tiny room they were able to get in a bed and breakfast while Summer would run. She would run and run, her stamina always increasing. It was the best way she could think, to concentrate and to train. She felt herself becoming stronger everyday. She was also becoming more flexible and able to react quickly and maneuver through the crowds and the narrow streets without bumping into anyone. As the years passed she was able to scale walls by pulling herself up on window ledges and clothes lines that crowded narrow alleys.
When the day came, Summer and Savanna joined the military. Summer was ready, she was strong and quick. She felt she could do anything. Savanna, however, was weak and awkward, but she was determined to do something with her life other than waste away in a small room while her sisters did the fighting. The sisters stood side by side as the Captain studied the others around them. Summer stood straight, her slender form looking strong even in the uniform. Savanna's posture was a bit weaker as she slouched slightly. When the Captain stopped to give Summer and Savanna his look over, he smirked at the fire that raged strongly in Summer's eyes, but his eyebrows shot up momentarily when he noticed the pretty sister awkwardly standing there. He shook his head and walked on.

Grey just stood strong, unyielding when a drill instructor got into his face. Why most of the boys flinched when getting yelled at, he never moved or blinked. He stood by others from his hometown when the wall broke. Two of the girls from the dress shop stood nearby but he never spoke to them. Out of habit, he quickly caught the instructor's wrist when he went to poke Carrie in the chest. He never let anyone touch her in a threatening manner after the event. It had become a habit and a reflex. The man was slightly in shock, the boy was fast and accurate in aim. The instructor just smirked at him. "Seems we have a knight in shining armor." He jerked his wrist from Grey's grip. He stood in Grey's face once more. "What's your name pretty boy?" He spoke harshly to the boy. "Christian Grey." Grey replied plainly. "Ah, I heard of you. The tough guy picking fights and defending old ladies. Well you know what we do to tough guys." Grey never replied, instead he just followed the orders given.
He was forced to do push ups as they introduced the new recruits into the academy. Carrie just watched as he was forced to do push ups behind the instructors. Set after set he did, she could see him getting tired but he never stopped. Once the instructors were done. The instructor went to him and forced him to run laps around the field. All because her sulate was horrible. Once again Grey was punished for her weakness.
Finally when the day was nearly over and they sat in the mess hall. She turned to him and apologized. "I'm sorry Grey, I'll work harder so you won't be punished for me." She said softly. He just looked at her and smiled softly. "Nothing to apologize for. I acted, my actions are what got me into trouble." He simply told her. "And foolish actions they were." A guy said in an annoying tone. Grey just ignored him. "Hey! I'm talking to you tough guy." Grey still just ignored him, which only made the boy more angry. Grey just stuffed the bread on his tray into Carrie's mouth when she went to talk. "Eat." He told her plainly and she listened to her friend.

Summer watched the as the drill instructor tore into the boy she had seen around town before, Who does he think he is? Grabbing the Intructor's wrist like that? That girl won't stand a chance if he keeps hovering over her the way he does.. Protecting her from all the bullies. She knew the boy was only trying to protect that girl he was always with, but he wouldn't be able to protect her for forever. Even he had to realize that. Sure, Summer would often help Savanna, but she tried to limit the help. Her sister needed to be strong, needed to grow up and stop crying. If she always protected her, it would never happen. Savanna just wasn't cut out for the military. Not any branch of it.
Summer was still lost in her thoughts when the drill instructor was on Savanna. "Well, look at you. Aren't you a pretty little flower." He was so close to Savanna's face, that she could feel his breath. She stopped breathing, her face burning red as a nervous sweat beaded across her forehead. The instructor seemed to notice how uncomfortable he was making Savanna and that seemed to puff up his ego, "Flowers are such delicate things." He whispered dryly. "Why I've seen sprigs of grass that look stronger than you! HA! What a great addition to the crew we got ourselves here." The last part he yelled. Savanna flinched and seemed to shrink away under him. Finally the drill instructor moved on and studied Summer. Was this the girl he had heard rumors about? The one that moved faster than anyone had seen before. "And you must be that twigs sister? Think you're so tough?" He smirked as he saw Summer's strong stance and salute, "Alright, if you think you're so tough..."
The day went on and Summer was still running around the training grounds. The instructor had told her to run for hours. Lap after lap after lap. By the time the forth hour was up, Summer was indeed exhausted, but she felt alive. Running was enjoyable to her. With aching legs, Summer headed towards the mess hall and walked proudly past the intructor who was watching her. She entered the hall and found her sister sitting alone at a table. She quickly grabbed some food and water and went to her sister. Other recruits were staring, but Summer could care less. She knew she a total mess. Her hair plastered widly from dried sweat and dust caked her clohthing, but she smiled at Savanna and gulped down most of her water, "Well that was fun." The older sister was unsure of whether to apologize or laugh at her sister. "I'm sorry, Summer. Maybe if I was stronger he wouldn't have done that to you." Savanna's voice was full of saddness. "No, sister, he would have. Remember that the instructor will pick out the weak and harrass them, but he will also pick out those who he believes to be strong and work them to death. I've heard of it before. Sierra told us, remember?" Summer smiled at her sister and greedily stuffed bits of bread into her mouth.
