During all these years I've lived in Belgium I've noticed that many people have wrong ideas on manga and/or anime. Most people think that it's Japanese Porn (I even thought it was porn when I was younger!) or they think that anime is manga and don't even know the difference.
And today I've red how they found someone(here in Belgium) that was murdered, and had his/her limbs missing, with two notes next to it. The notes said 'Watashi wa Kira dess', Japanese for 'I am the murderer' and it refers to a sentence from the famous Manga Death Note.
This makes me fear for the view people have on manga. It is not so popular here in Belgium and almost no one knows about it. And it makes me sad to know that when I tell people about my love for manga that they will refer to all those bad things.
Now I ask of you, what do you think about the views that people, who don't know anything about manga, have on manga?

Most people in the United States who don't know much about anime and manga just think of Pokemon and Naruto and stuff. At least that's in my experience. When I was younger it was Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z. XD I do think that to some degree anime and manga can be childish, but there are also really good, well written anime's out there. I don't like that they fall by the way side in public opinion, but that's the way of things. It's harder to sell cartoons to adults in the US, then it is to sell them to children.
Personally I haven't watched anime in years, but I will always love Cowboy Bebop, Lain, Neon Genesis, and the like. I still read Manga from time to time. I've been buying the new Battle Angel books, and Blade of the Immortal.

In my class everyone also knows Pokémon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Dragonball-Z, that kind of stuff. Most don't know that they are watching anime without knowing, and then they laugh at me because I like anime :roll:.

It isn't so unheard of here in Australia but you still get the occasional person who doesn't know much about it at all. Luckily at the very least almost every child here watched pokemon, Didgimon, Dragon Ball Z or the myriad of other animes that are popular here when they where little so they know at least that manga/anime isn't a porno.
I personally still do watch a few animes including Elfen Lied and Death Note.

It kinda bugs me when people say 'i love drawing anime!' because you can't really draw anime. xD [you can draw the scenes, but anime is the finished product]
i subscribe to Shojo Beat. xD

When they say that they mean the anime style. Drawing a whole anime on your own is hard work :wink:.

You know, I heard of that Death Note killer. My friend found the first Death Note volumes at Half-Price and seeing as none of us actually owned it she bought it. It hadn't even been there for an hour! But when she checked it out the cashier told her of him. I thought that was absolutely crazy. didn't they learn from the ending? ><;
Anyways, yeah most people in US view anime as that kiddy stuff even though quite a lot of that stuff I would never let a child watch ;O
I blame 4Kids. People scoff when I tell them I like Yu Gi Oh but they haven't seen how it really is. Far from a thing I'd let a child read <<;
And others think it's devil stuff (stolen words ><;) and it's demented that and Japan will be smitten.
Not my views, mind you, jsut something somebody said to me.

Yea.. a lot of people over here dont know anime and if they do dislike it, they think all anime is cutsey eyes and stuff like pokemon, digimon and all that lot. >>;;
Honestly... they should check out proper anime like Death Note and FMA.

I adore Anime and Manga, that's how my obsession with Japan started. Since then I've read all kinds of different genres and such.
But, some of my friends tease me for liking it. >.>
And they shouldn't judge them before they've seen/read any of em'.

But, I also got alot of people into liking it. :twisted:

Ignorant people piss me off. It's one thing if you don't know something and then learn...and change your initial reaction. My dad, however, hates manga and anime. He says that manga is a 'backwards book' and that it must be hard to read. He'll get mad if I spend time reading through a whole series. Honestly, what parent gets mad at their children for reading? And he hates it when I watch anime too...although he'll watch Yu-Gi-Oh if it comes on...as it is a "cartoon"...I laugh.

Well anyway, in portugal it's just about the same... no one knows what the difference of manga and anime is nor what it is about really...
We even have a collection of anime Dvds and it's called Manga Dvds <.< or something like that...
Actually most people here don't even know the difference between japanese and chinese @_@

Sounds almsot as close as my dad, though he dosent get pissed off when i read a whole series or when it comes on.
But he did used to think Yu-Gi-Oh wasent a anime, also just a moment ago he argued with me saying that ''brats'' look like anime.. saying the eyes look like it!
I hate it when people do that >.<;; its not the fact they have big eyes its the STYLE i mean geez.. most anime/manga (even most shojou the adult looking ones like Tenshi Ja Nai anyway do anyway) have smaller eyes than that, and jsut ebcause it has big eyes doesent mean its anime >.<;; geex.. talked about total black world.....
Also he gets hyped up when i play Trickster to though, my mum does to sometimes as well (once she did anyway, think she was drunk though.)
I hate people who gets pissed at people for liking/disliking something.. opinion changers to!

Wow that's freaky about the killer xD;
There was a 16 year old girl in Kyoto who changed into a black dress and killer her policeman father with a cleaver, similar to Rena in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni ^^;
And then there's the infamous 11 year old Battle Royale fangirl killer Nevada-tan o.O.
Anyway on subject~
People I talked to, usually don't know what it is, then think it's pokemon when I tell them, then stop listening. There was a few rare ones I got the chance to show anime to, and 2 that I know of are now obsessed 8D
My mum and sister are born again christians now and wanted my anime out of the house at first, I said if they threw that out, I'd be going with it xD
Anyway I had to watch Meteor Garden, a sweet taiwanese drama downstairs because of dvd player problems, and she ended up watching with me, loved it, and now says nothing bad about anime. I told her I watched the sweet stuff xD
...Oh if only she saw Higurashi or Death Note...hehehe~
