◄Introduction►

You may not know about the video game "Okami" or you may have known about it since it was released, but let's get to the basic description, shall we?
The video game version is centered around the sun goddess Amaterasu along with other bits and pieces of Japanese mythology.
The *simplified* story is this --
One hundred years ago, Nagi and the wolf, Shiranui battled the great dragon, Orochi and imprisoned him inside the moon cave, with the sword Tsukuyomi acting as a seal.
One day one hundred years later, Nagi's descendant, Susano pulled the sword from the the seal, trying to prove the legend of Orochi was a hoax, he accidently released Orochi from his prison, allowing the dark beast to wreak havoc on all of Nippon. But, the place where Susano lived, Kamiki Village has been home to a statue version of the great Shiranui, who helped Nagi defeat Orochi all those years ago. Sakuya, the resident wood sprite used her last bit of power to protect the village from Orochi's wrath, performed a ritual to summon Amaterasu, to inhabit the statue of Shiranui and defeat Orochi once again, using a magical paintbrush to channel her divine powers, after learning brushstrokes from the gods.
Quite a long legend, for being simplified, correct?
--
Now, 100 years after Orochi's second defeat, new evil has risen..
Orochi's spirit is still living, festering in the bowels of the earth, waiting to attack again.
Amaterasu has been returned to statue form, since new heroes have come to fight instead. Kamiki Village is still being looked after by Sakuya, and Amaterasu's statue, but the rest of Nippon is slowly decaying from a new curse, similiar to the one Amaterasu and her sidekick, Issun dispelled of one hundred years earlier.
Strangely enough, the people of Nippon had not aged since Orochi's earlier defeat. But, soon, citizens will be dropping like flies from this great evil.
Will you help save Nippon from Orochi, for the third time in three hundred years? Or will you help the dark dragon rise to power, in exchange for rewards beyond your imagination?

◄Monster List►

There's lots of different monsters in mythical Nippon, so why not let your creativity cut loose?
No pictures required, just describe your monster and do a little profile for it, add anything you want! Use it in a battle post, make it a servant of Orochi, or even design them for other people for their posts.
Anything is possible, even if you don't own a Celestial Paintbrush.
--

Current list -

Name - Oni Mirror
Element - Dark/Metal
Weakness - Earth based attacks/Hammers
Commonly found in - Old kabuki theatres/Abandoned temples
History - Oni mirrors are usually created when an Oni dies, and the spirit wanders until it finds a mirror, or even a lacquerware dish to possess, turning an ordinary object into a dangerous weapon with a reflection of the dead Oni's face. The smell of salt thickened the air of the Ryoshima Coast. Haruo was careful not to breath too deeply, for he was afraid he might choke on the rich air. He was so used to the thin and powerfully crisp air of his mountainous home back up in Kamui. He also noticed that it was a lot brighter here. In fact, even though it had taken him a week or so to wander down here, even though he was in dog form most of the time, he was still squinting somewhat from the sunlight that poured from the fiery globe high above them. Glancing around, he took in the area. Currently he stood on a cliff that was due west of the Ankoku Temple. Before him a beach stretched out, it's white sand casting up a blinding glow. Beyond that opened up the ocean, its shallow waters so clear Haruo could clearly see fish from his position. A bit further out sat a ship wreck that was nestled in the ocean's clam bosom and the sand that lay beneath the waters. While one may usually see the ship as a horrific feature to the coast's breath-taking landscape, Haruo himself saw it as a beautiful sight. Since his people were so different from the rest of Nippon's population, he had a slight hatred for large, man-made objects, so seeing a vessel destroyed and slowly decaying was like looking at some of Nippon's best ink art for him.

Finally, a sigh escaped Haruo's mouth, his hand touching his mask as if it comforted him in these strange lands. Reluctantly, he drew his gaze away from the dazzling waters to face the stairs that lead up to the Ankoku Temple. Cheery blossoms trees were in bloom around in front of it and a little to the left of the stairs rested a bell with a sign posted in front of it. Between the bell and the temple stairs rested a few tombstones, which Haruo guessed belong to fishermen who were lost at sea. So, as he made his way to the steps, he was careful to stay on the little dirt path to the right of the small graveyard, not wanting to defile the graves of others. Once he reached the start of the steps, though, he hesitated, looking up them, his gaze being led to the temple with the help of the gates that where set up over the stairs at even intervals. And there he stood, unsure if he should go up yet or not.

Finally, with an unsure step, he pressed his right foot upon the first step of many. After a deep breath, which he did indeed gag on at first, he took another step. Then another. Then another and another until he resumed at a normal pace. Quickly he ascended the gray granite steps, keeping his eyes focused on the temple at the top. Every minute or so, a shadow would pass over him from one of the massive gates. His steps were swift yet loud as his wooden geta clacked against the stone. The higher up Haruo got, the more nervous and uncomfortable he got. When he finally reached the top, he became frozen on the last step, staring at the huge temple, his hand gripping the mask at his waist tightly to try and ease his spirits.

Sira sighed as she sat by the large tori gate at Ankoku Temple.
"Nothing ever happens around here.. and then Orochi suddenly appears? I wanted some excitement in my life.. but this is a little too much." She whispered to herself, petting a small sparrow that had landed on her lap.
Suddenly, she noticed a young man walk up the stone steps, leading to the temple's main sanctuary.
"We don't get many visitors.. and most of them are from Sei-an city.. This guy looks kinda odd.."
"Do you think he'll try to hurt the preistess in the temple..?" Sira asked the sparrow, before getting up from her seat by the gate.

As some movement came from near the front of the temple, Haruo snapped out of his dazed state, his gaze sweeping until it found the source of the motion. Once his gaze landed on a woman walking his way, a sparrow fluttering behind her. The royal purple of her obi draw Haruo's attention momentarily to her lower torso and waist. Half a second later he tore his gaze away and back to the woman's pale face to avoid appearing rude. As she got closer, Haruo remembered his manners and bowed low to the woman. Even though he felt like he was older than her, she did work at a temple, which he figured gave her more respect, thus a deeper bow.

"Excuse, ma'am, but is this the Ankoku Temple of Ryoshima Coast?" he asked while still in his bow. Once he felt sure she would of replied to his bow somehow, he straightened himself up, his hand went back to his mask, his fingers resting on it lightly. He onyx-colored eyes remained locked upon the woman's pale face, yet he tried to keep his gaze and expression relaxed to avoid seeming rude.

Haruo was sent here by his village chief. Ever sense his people began to feel an evil presence among Nippon, they had grown restless. Last month, the chief began to grow concerned since the presence seemed to grow in strength each day. He then asked Haruo to travel to various temples and villages throughout Nippon to see if anyone knew what was happening. So far, none of the villages he had passed so far had known anything, so the Ryoshima coast temple and the Sei-An city temple were his last hopes, really. He felt confident, though, because the evil seemed strongest here, so someone was bound to have noticed it by now and know something.

Sira smiled gently at the man as he bowed towards her and the following sparrow.
"Yes, this is the place.. What business do you have here?" She questioned.
"Not many people visit this sacred place, especially people with dog masks.." She drew her attention to the white mask at his waist, then focused her eyes back on him.

As the woman's attention went to his mask briefly, Haruo's fingers tightened around it as if his whole hand could engulf in and protect it. After a few seconds of silence, he exhaled a bit, as if he had been holding his breath. "Indeed, I bet you don't see many of my kind here. Anyways, I'm here on a mission for the Oina tribe of the Kamui village in Northern Nippon. Lately, my people have been feeling a heaviness in Nippon's atmosphere. Well, I guess describing it as a darkness that is choking Nippon's life light would be a better way to describe it. Finally, we've become concerned enough to send one of our kind out of our lands to find out what has been going on.

"So far my trip across Nippon has given me no information, just a heavier feeling of this darkness. So far, this temple and the temple in Sei-an city just northeast of here are my last hopes. I was wondering if you might have any knowledge as to what is what is happening. Obviously, evil is surfacing, but we don't know what type, thus how to prepare ourselves." Once done with his long explanation, Haruo inhaled deeply then exhaled.

A wind picked up from the ocean and ran up along the cliff face. As it hit them, the collective ponytail of his hair rolled over Haruo's left shoulder and the loose sections fluttered a bit, getting into his face for a second. As the wind died down, he removed his hand from his mask and brushed his hair out of his face.

Sira nodded her head slightly.
"Yes, I do know what is going on.. the preists and preistess in this temple have been uneasy about this dark energy ever since the dream came to me.." Sira hung her head low in discomfort before continuing.
"The preistess interpreted my dream, then began casting protective spells on Ryoshima coast, after contacting the Emperor in Sei-an city.."
"I'm sorry if I make no sense, thus far.. but please follow me and I'll show you whats going on." Sira gestured her hand towards the strange man, then began walking up the rest of the steps, towards the inner sanctuary.

As the temple woman began to speak of dream visions and the head priestess' casting of protective spells along the coast, Haruo began to feel a bit uneasy. He crossed his arms, hiding his hands underneath his crimson haori, the silk releasing a soft rustle as his skin brushed against the fine fabric. Dark eyes flashed in a worrisome manner. If the priestess was casting protective spells based off the interpretation of dreams, Haruo's gut feeling told him that things were pretty bad. As bad as, if not worse than, the time about a century ago when a sword was removed, releasing Orochi, which eventually led to the knowledge of some greater evil hidden in a sacred Ark. Haruo shuddered thinking back to the tales from those times. He had heard many of them from Oki when Haruo was a child and extremely interested in tales of old times. As a child, Haruo had always taken a great interest in Oki's tale, especially when he spoke of the white wolf that he helped.

Haruo was drawn back from his reflections of older times when the woman pointed to the temple and began to walk towards it. Haruo was careful to follow her with small steps so he would not over take her with his stride, for it seemed her kimono might hinder her walking speed. He kept his eyes trained on the ground around her kimono as he followed her slowly. His geta clacked softly on the earthy grounds around the temple. As they reached the temple entrance, he was sure to slip his feet out of the geta and step upon the temple's threshold, not wanting to step in an outer region where one was not supposed to without proper shoes on.

Glancing around the temple, Haruo took in a deep breath, yet his face remained absolutely serious. This temple was so much more elegant that the frigid one in his village. It surprised him a good deal. After taking in the temple's interior, he glanced back at the pale woman. "Alright, I sort of get what you were saying earlier, ma'am. May I ask how being in the temple will make your explaining any easier?"

"Oh, yes. of course.." Sira replied, noticing that the strange man was still behind her.
"The preistess has a few scrolls that explain what's going on in Nippon." She added, pushing open the carved, wooden doors at the front of the inner temple sanctuary.
Sira continued to walk through the tea-scented hall, after closing the heavy doors.
"The library is this way.." She pointed towards a small corridor situated between two metal Oni masks.
"Who exactly is this guy..? He seems to be from the mountains, judging by his appearance.." Sira thought silently.

Silently, Haruo followed the woman as she led the way through the temple. His tabi made gentle whispers as they danced along the surface of the wooden floor as he walked. His face remain forward, as if he was watching the back of the woman's head, yet his eyes wandered to take in the temple as more and more of it was exposed. The longer they were in the tea-scented hallway, and more at ease Haruo felt. It was extremely relaxing to him because it reminded him of feeling he got whenever he came home from duty and made himself some tea to warm himself up.

As she pointed out where the library was, Haruo bowed to her again. "Sorry for troubling you, ma'am, but you help so far has been greatly appreciated." After removing himself from his bow, Haruo carefully traveled towards the corridor, glancing at the Oni masks on either side of the entrance. Deep down he hoped that by her pointing out the library made it oh-kay for him to enter. He glanced back at her, his face still holding an empty expression even though some worry ate away at his stomach.

As he fully entered the corridor, he looked back in front of him. He scanned the scrolls on either side oh him. After half a second, he noted a scroll labeled in a manner that seemed relevant to answering his question. Gently, he removed the scroll from its shelf and into his hands, glancing at the temple woman again. He then looked back at the scroll and began to unroll it. Once it was fully unrolled, he began to read it. He was slow and careful with his reading process so as he'd get everything right during the first read.

"That's the wrong scroll silly." Sira giggled as she walked over towards the man.
"The preistess keeps track of the world scrolls, which has the answers you seek." She tugged the man's hand slightly, feeling quite embarrased at doing so.
"The preistess should be in the sacred section of the library, c'mon.." Sira led the way through row upon row of bamboo bookcases, before arriving at a dark paper screen door, near a wooden sign which read -- "神聖な研究." -- "Sacred Study."
