Despite appearances, I'm worth almost 30k. I've a number of contribution items rotting in my inventory on this - an account I barely use. Surely you've never heard of me, nor seen me. This is because I'm not an active poster and because of this, have scant gold. One of the first 1,000 users, and I have a whopping 180 gold to my name, and have bought only one item, worth 290 gold and I remember being very excited when I could afford it.

Because I have so little gold and find it hard to earn said gold, I rarely visit Menewsha save once a month to see if I like the contribution items.

I'm a hypocrite for this.

I hate when people let expensive items rot in their inventories on Gaia, as I happen to know someone who never comes on yet happens to have five Devil Tails in his inventory. Despite this, I do it myself here. I don't want to sell my items because, one day, I may be able to sell one or two and be set for the rest of my days. So I keep them here, on a scantily-clad, noob-looking account.... and wait.

Do you do stuff like this?
What's your opinion on item hoarding by users who don't even post?

I guess it could annoy me depending what it was, I mean if someone was hoarding 358234 V-day items and never got on then maybe but for the most part I think people can do whatever they want, they're their items. :)

While I can't stand it when anyone is glaringly hypocritical, if you're not posting, not earning gold, and donating for the CIs you actually have, you're not doing nearly the damage to the market and economy as several others around here who deliberately suck the items out of the market to hoard.

Still, one could wonder why you keep doing that if you're not interested in the site.

Sounds partly like a waste to me.The reason i think its a waste is because like you said your not very involved in the community.Now i`m not very involved here or anything but i try my best to post a bit.Anyways why are you spending money here on a site that sounds like you don`t use often or are maybe not interested in? you are partly helping the community but your not really involved here.In the end its your decision what you do with your items and gold..and money.

I don't really care if you donate for your CIs and let them sit there, though I don't know why you would. If you're not active, why pay for the items?

But I HATE it when people hoard every rare item that gets released, because you KNOW they're just biding their time to eventually sell their items for ridiculous prices. There's a limited supply of those, and buying them ALL and never letting new users have a chance.. ugh.

I tend to think of hoarding items as keeping them in case I get a friend that needs one. I also only seem to horde event items. Like I have four (I think) of each of the even items from last month. This way if a new person comes on in a year or so, I can give her something. Otherwise, I use everything I get. If the CI is something I don't want, and I already bought it, I would likely sell it, like I do on Gaia.

@ Fabby I agree with you,i dislike it so much when people just buy items because they want to sell them and because they are rare.Then new people and people who don`t have it want to buy it but they are all gone.So the people who want it have to buy it from a person re selling them and by that time the person is selling them at such a high price that most people can never afford them.which is so not fair of people but it happens.

Hoarding in the sense that someone is buying up all the liquid copies of an item is one thing.. earning EI's and/or buying donation items from the source and hanging on to them is quite another, IMHO.

For example, I have multiples of the items from the last event. I could sell them all now... but since the event just happened and a lot of people have extra.. it seems rather pointless. I'd much rather sell them later when there is a greater demand for them. That's just smart business sense. However, I'm not going to start buying up duplicates later on and holding those so that people can't find a copy of the item.. that wouldn't be very fair on a site this size. ^^;;

Nah, I don't hoard, to be honest. I keep a set for myself, and at least a set for future uses, be it an art contest or donating. Other than that I rarely want to spend the gold it would take to gather a lot of sets.

Though, it makes me very sad when I know someone has left and has a rare item rotting in their inventory. : (

Personally, I don't think it's that bad when you're actually spending real money. You're not taking any items away from the economy and you're not contributing to inflation or anything. Really, if you're not active in the community then you're not helping or hurting it. It's like you're not there..

Stuff like that is really only hurting the person doing it, because there's no point in wasting money on a site you're not actively participating in. If they want to spend a crazy amount of money on Contribution Items, then good for them. As long as they're not using gold to buy the contribution items, they're not harming anyone.

It makes no difference to me if you're donating for CIs and not being active otherwise. I don't see the point in it personally, as I wouldd rather not waste $5 a month on a site I am not actively participating in, but that's your prerogative. This type of hoarding is actually beneficial, in my opinion. Your money helps to improve the site for those who are active, and if some day you decide to sell your old, rare contribution and event items, you will make people who have been searching for them very happy. :}

It's a bit unfair, but it's still just pixels. I try not to let it get to me. However, two friends of mine have the rare head-bands, but they hardly log on. I'd ask if I could have the items, but I doubt they'd give the head-bands to me. That and I'm not entirely sure if the second friend still has the angelic head band (which I gave to her because at the time, I was a newb).

I hate having stuff in my inventory that I rarely use.

Like several people have said before - If you're not buying up items on the market and are only "hoarding" the items you purchased or earned yourself, I have no problem with it. :)

I think it would, of course, be much better if you sold or donated all your items if you decided you were no longer interested in the site, but either way, it's not actually terrible.

I love that you come back and donate to the site, though you don't participate much... I hope you develop a stronger interest in the site and use the features more often, though. :) We like active users. :)

SOUNDS LIKE YOU SHOULD SET UP A CHARITY. OR DONATE TO ME.

Just kidding. :3

I don't do that simply because i don't have the money to. On gaia, I do, because I've been there since early '04. With a few week long breaks, but mostly constantly.
So, I have many EIs an DIs, there.. >.>

But it's fun. As long as you don't monopolize the market.

I agree with most other posting here, in that i see no wrong with what you are doing.

Your not taking out items that were onc in the market, and your helping keep the site going.

So, really, you could sell your older DI's right now and make some profit, which there would be no harm in. And you could get clothed!

*poke Therius* Hey, I rember you from HT.
I don't know you're in menewsha too. xD

I don't mind people do a little hoarding actually
But only if they hold a bit of items and not to inflate.

If they collect like over 100 of the same items
and then sell them with 5-10 times higher
than the latest market's transactions,
only because no one was selling at the moment,
that would be just terrible. >.<;;

I have a bit of extra items, mostly from events
because I earn them from the events myself,
but I haven't been selling any of them only because
I'm bad at thinking of prices and rejecting/accepting offers,
so my other alternatives beside using them as quest's offer
are probably sending them out as gifts to my friends someday,
or perhaps giving them away through charity or art contests.

I always dream of making my own art contest
with many big prizes anyway. xD

Do what you want, you're not hurting anyone, especially since you're not marketing your worth for stupid prices. I too am sure to get an extra set or two of even items, but not to hoard. I don't get enough to hoard, because I know what that does to the market, it's what has happened in Gaia, and I DON'T want to see it here. But I'm not afraid to have a few to keep then sell later for profit, vending being a major interest of mine in these RPG sites.

It's disgusting when people do hog though, and I'll never understand how they can be so stupid as to do so. Because any intelligent person who has been around and understands the way sites like these work, knows that if there's too much of a certain item, it'll never sell. Besides people are usually interested in owning items they think not many others have. It's a twisted ego thing. They're little bubble that overly inflates so long as they have something, that someone else doesn't.

If you don't like it here, and don't want to spend time here, no problem. I wouldn't say you've wasted any though. You have to spend time to waste time .. and you said yourself you're inactive. I would say sell whatever you have that you think will put you well off, save your account password, and take another break. You may find as the site continues to update an improve, you might want to participate more. And, when you do, you'll have all that gold to begin with. That's smart, to me.

Nope. I don't do it. I like hoarding on commons though, but that's just since I like changing my clothing. xD;;
I don't get ticked off by it either, unless of course they're all arrogant about it. > w <;;

On Gaia I just collect a full set of one year and sell it almost a week after a new year has started. >__>

Its your money, its your stuff. Do what you want.

The hoarders have to use their money to buy to make that investment. Obviously, would they take the time to gather all those items if they were going to sell them for the same price they got them as? Obviously not. That's their method of making money. Its just the way life rolls and I its really annoying to see people hate on them. o-o;

Though I really like how the Giving Back Auctions work. That, and the people that keep it low, are what keeps things in a balance. A shaky balance, nonetheless, but a balance.

o-o Now, I'm a complete idiot when it comes to economy, so if I come off sounding like a total blabbering idiot, that's my excuse. I'll gladly take any explanations or corrections, but if you're gonna call me an ignorant loudmouth, ignore this post entirely.

I don't always have enough time to come on here and particpate as much as I'd like. But I still donate, and I earn items during events, usually a few extra sets if I can. I really enjoy this site a lot (probably my favorite, outside of Gaia), despite the waning amount of time I have to spend on other avatar sites. So I don't think it's a big deal if you still genuinely have interest in the site, and enjoy it, you're still donating and earning items.

It's another thing entirely if you suck them out of the marketplace, just to keep in your account for a year or more, to make a huge profit from it. I mean, I suppose obtaining a few items and saving them just for that purpose is fine. But when you have, say, ten or twenty-plus sitting in your account solely for future profit, it's something to frown upon.

Even worse, is when you own most of the items in the market (what I call, mega-hoarding). Then, you have the ability to control the prices. It's bound to happen with the earliest items, because people leave the site after awhile. But-- like the oriental fans? I started questing for one when I joined (a month after they were released) and now it's impossible, because NOBODY sells them. D:

I have never actually bought something I already had.

I do, however, keep extra CIs I buy with real money and extra items from events to fund my quest. Though, I doubt with current inflation that my quest has much hope anymore.

I wish people wouldn't deliberately take items out of the economy, as mentioned above, to inflate things. D:

We don't have the giving back auction anymore. What do we do about inflation this year?

Hoarding doesn't really bother me. Heck I wouldn't know who's hoarding and who isn't anyway. I don't think you're exactly hoarding as in you're purchasing a set or two at a time. It's actually smart what you're doing because when you do wanna participate more, you can gain items you want easily.

Recently I decided to keep an extra set of CIs for maybe later doing some trading on other items I'd like. If I happen to like a CI then I'll keep an extra one for me. Otherwise I just buy and sell some for others to have to help people get the items and it's just a fun way to meet others and get involved.

I only consider hoarding a negative habit when one user sets out to purposely own all available stock in an item. The inflation when that occurs is usually pretty aggravating.

I have spare sets of CIs and EIs on my mule totaling up to 35k+, but that's simply because I buy or donate for doubles of items I really like as a future investment.

'Hoarding' is a natural part of an economy. It's a way of ensuring profit in the future; it only becomes problematic when the items are monopolized.
