.S.A.D.A.M.E.
How does one compress eons into a few words, lifetimes into a few paragraphs, and countless friends gained and lost into mere speech? I was born and reborn countless times into different worlds. I retained my memory as I traveled, tearing open the fabric between dimensions with this key of mine. Nobody knew me when I step into their world, nobody remembered me when I left: I was as a ghost, drifting in and out of people’s lives without a ripple or even the faintest echo. It’s all part of the Spell, of the Key and Seal combined, which tucked away people’s memories of me when I left their lives.
It’s only upon the rarest occasions does the Spell break. People with a strong will or source of magic are able to tuck me safely into their minds; the Mesmer of the spell gives way in the most profound circumstances... Mesmer, the oldest of all magic to make humans forget and forgive, the most basic power of the Winged. A gift and a curse.
I am a Winged, as are my companions Aaldur and Fatimne. There are many Winged folks: Angels, Demons, and Fairies, as they are known by humans. There are many races unnamed by men, because their magic is much stronger and their Mesmer ensured the complete obliteration of their memories from the minds of those they chance to encounter. It’s not that our magic is weak, but it’s our will. We don’t want to be forgotten, because sometimes loneliness is much worse even death, even being known by men, the destroyers of all things.
Sometimes it happens, a Winged become ensnared by its heart. There is no way to lock away a Winged in cages: we are only as substantial as we want to be. A mere thought and we could become mere motes of dust and light. No, we could only be pinned and captured with our hearts. It’s Forbidden by the oldest laws of our race, created at the dawn of time: a Winged is not allowed to united with a human; even interbreeding is looked down upon. However, rules are made to be broken, and we Fell nevertheless.
A guardian angel and his charge fell in love long before I was born. They, in a casual and careless way, and sealed my Fate.
This is my story.
