The Gorillaz seem to be going for a heavier hip hop sound in their newest album, Plastic Beach. While I love their earlier works I must admit I'm really looking forward to this new album! Several songs will be featuring Mos Def, and one will have Snoop Dogg. I'm honestly not sure what to expect from this album, but anything Damon Albarn makes is sure to be a winner, in my opinion.
Will anybody else be looking forward to this album?
There is also a single out right now which features Mos Def, if anyone is interested. I believe you can find it on their MySpace page (Ew, lol).
Note:
For those who don't know Damon Albarn, he got his start as the frontman of Blur, then later formed the Gorillaz. Since then he has also been the frontman of super-group The Good the Bad and the Queen, which consisted of Damon on vocals and keys, The Clash's Paul Simonon; on bass, The Verve's Simon Tong; on guitar, and Africa 70's drummer and musical director Tony Allen; drums.

Oh me too! :D I'm such a huge fan of Gorillaz!
And I'm really happy because in this album they have a collaborative track with one of my other favourite artists Lou Reed, AND also the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble which my dad plays to me a lot. :XD
I don't know about heavier hip hop, I'd say their first album and it's B-side are VERY hip hop, I think the one that stands out is Demon Days for being LESS heavily hip-hop on some tracks! :XD Although the remixes on the B-side are pretty hip-hop, and there're some really fantastic ones on there.

I'm really looking forward to this! It feels like forever since Demon Days came out, I've really missed them. I can't wait until their "plot" is going again too, one of the best parts of the band is its fictional bandmates. Do we know what happened to Noodle yet?

Wow, I didn't know they were coming out with a new album. I've always had a deep love of the Gorillaz, so I'm quite curious about how this one is going to sound. Sounds like it's going to be a good'un. :D I'm a big Mos Def fan, but I can't say I'm totally excited about their collab with Snoop...

Yeah! That's how I felt. I'm a big fan of mos def as well, but the Snoop d-o-double g part threw me off a bit. I enjoyed his earlier works, however some of his newer stuff wasn't anything special. Maybe he'll surprise us both. XD

I'm looking forward to this album as well. Always loved Gorillaz and the style they have. Sans, I feel the same about Snoop. His earlier works have always been good and while I'll listen to his latest work, it's just not as good.

I'm not really looking forward to it but I'll be happy when it comes out.
What I mean is that while I do like the Gorillaz, they aren't one of my top favorite bands anymore. I used to love them and listened to them all the time but I grew out of it. I still really love the art style though.
I have heard Superfast Jellyfish and its pretty rad so I wonder how the rest of the album is going to be.

It's good to know that everyone is alive and Murdoc is over his mid-life crisis. I'm a huge fan myself, but it saddens me a bit to know that their work is going more hip-hop. While I don't mind the hip-hop stuff they do, I really am concerned at how the lyrics will turn out. Clint Eastwood was a deep song, do you think they will return to those lyrics? I felt that Dirty Harry in comparison wasn't as deep. On a side note, both tracks are titled after Clint Eastwood and are both track number 5 on their CDs Demon Days and their first album. I'll still give their new stuff a shot.

I didn't even know they were coming out with a new album until I read this thread. XD I listened to a few of the tracks on their website, and they're decent, but I'm still voting that their first album was the best. I may pick up this new one eventually, though. I still love their sound.

I got the album on itunes 4 hours before it was supposed to drop (I'm guessing midnight?) and I love it! You'd all be surprised, while it is heavier on the hip-hop, it doesn't feel any different from their work. I think the only truely different thing they have is "Cloud of Unknowing" which I am listening to right now. Usually they have either 2D or Noodle voices singing or onoccasion the guy who suppoidly left his head (spoiler: he's in the album, if Russ returns, I bet he will too). They added only a couple extras that I can't exactly pinpoint who the voice is supposed to represent.
A personal favorite from the album is "Some Kind of Nature."

I've only heard Stylo, and I love that song.
I really like how they collaborated with Mos Def.
He's a really good rapper.
The video was kind of weird, but it was creative.

I haven't the funds as of yet to get it for myself, but I've listened to the three singles 'Stylo', 'Superfast Jellyfish' and 'On Melancholy Hill', so far I'm really loving it! :D I'm gonna have to get my hands on the Plastic Beach Experience when I can.
I've heard the remixes of Stylo too from their Youtube page, my favourite so far is the Alex Metric one. Anyone else heard them? :) I think they've posted a couple, I do hope the Alex Metric remix gets on P-sides!
So far I'm not quite understanding the 'more hip-hop' vibey everyone seems to be getting here? They've always been a strange emalgamation of alternative/hip hip/electro-y stuff, if anything, I'm thinking this one's more electronica?

Well, with me, at least, I think the reason I fell in love with Gorillaz was their dub influence. It just feels to me like they're edging closer and closer to the mainstream definition of "hip hop," and that kind of makes me sad. =/ I mean, I'll always love what they've done so far; I'm just lamenting the loss of their original sound, I guess.

I do not like Plastic Beach at all. Like the poster above me said, they are inching closer to this mainstream hip hop sound, and that's really disappointing because their take on hip hop was unique and drew me to them the most. All those guest artists didn't do anything for me either.
And they went synth crazy, which was probably the most annoying thing for me. ): On Melancholy Hill's intro sounds like a Lady Gaga or Gwen Stefani song. -.-

(How did I know find this yesterday?! D= ) I didn't use to like Plastic Beach at all, but I just listened to it more and I started appreciating the way it sounded. I thought their new album was more techno/hip hop this time around. I'd have to say their new album doesn't compare to Demon Days. Though they do have a couple good tracks on there, like Rhinestone Eyes and To Binge. :)
