We've all heard stereotypes. Germans are all drunks, Americans are fat, British drink tea and eat crumpets . Of course they're not all true, but they can be amusing. What are some stereotypes of where you live?

I'm from New Jersey. I've heard that we're all guidos and communicate with out middle finger. The latter is rather true up north, but I live in South Jersey (right by Long Beach Island for those of you that have been there). I work in a grocery store on the island, and I've had customers assume that just because I'm not from up north I'm clearly destitute and stupid. This clearly isn't true, my family is rather affluent and I'm an honors student. Some customers fit the "north jersey" stereotype perfectly, however.

How about you? Where are you from?

I'm from Canada, the whole dog-sled and living in igloos thing, not true. Especially in Saskatchewan. Where do you make an igloo in the middle of the prairies? *eye roll*

Also never in my life have I said 'eh' or 'a boot' instead of about.

I'm from England, and I am very stereotypically English. I do drink an awful lot of tea and I do like scones and crumpets!
Earlier this year I even had some American tourists ask to take a picture with me, because I apparently "look so British". I'm not quite sure what that means, though. :?

On the other hand, I don't like fish and chips, and I don't have bad teeth... mind you, I've never understood that stereotype, we all get dental care (including cosmetic orthodonture) provided by the NHS until we're 18, so there's no reason anyone would have bad teeth. *shrug*

I live in America, and I do have to admit that a lot of Americans are fat.. >3<;; Though, I'm thinking that is is 60/40.. I mean, there are a lot of fat people, but then there are a lot of skinny people. Of course, like me, there are the chubby people who aren't fat or skinny. lol. (I'm on a diet, though. lol)

(I'm mostly German, and I hate drinking). But I live in Nevada. And when people think of Nevada, they think of nothing but desert. Yes, I do live in a desert, and there are some places that don't have people. But our air is nice and clean. And we do have towns and cities that cover up all the sand. Also I get tired of people thinking Vegas when they think Nevada. Las Vegas isn't the only place in Nevada where you can go to, to have fun. There are tons of historical things here in Nevada. And there is really only one place that has been preserved to look historical. And that would be Virginia City (though all the people up there are snobs =_=). Oh, and we actually have a couple of lakes and rivers out here. Seeing as Nevada used to be completely underwater :P

I'm from America - California, specifically. There seems to be a stereotype that all Californians are rich airheads. I'm certainly not rich, and I like to think I'm not an airhead. And there's also the stereotype that everyone in California is a health nut and a hippie, which sort of applies to me ... and, for some reason, everyone here is supposed to be skinny which doesn't really apply to me.

Well apparently being Scottish means:

- we all wear kilts
- we all love the bagpipes
- we all eat haggis every day
- we live in the highlands, isolated from everyone but the scenery
- we're all drunks
- we're all ginger
- we all have lots of body hair
- we never go shopping
- we all say 'Och aye the noo!' and speak like that
- we all live in castles
- we're all called Tammy because of those stupid tourist hats. D:<
- we can't get enough of tartan

there's plenty more, but I can't be bothered to list them all lol

Germans are mean and nasty. They are vulgar and spit when they talk.
The Irish are drunk.

I'm kidding.

I'm born and raised in Poland. We're seen as dumb and wearing socks with sandals. I'm more fashionally inclined than any American I know. Plus, I'm rather intelligent.

Yeah,I live in Baltimore,Maryland (the "worst city in Maryland").People stereotype us as a bunch of ignorant folks who will just shove people out of the way so we can get their first. Also,we have been stereotyped as the people who will steal everything form you if you have something expensive.

This first stereotype is true because some folks are like that, but not me.I carefully wait my turn and then seize my chance when I see it.As for the second stereotype,I have no idea where that came from.I thought one of our main stereotype is that we all smelled like crabs or something. This was a shock to me,stealing things from people.I would've thought of something that would make B-more seem very acceptable to the public. Well the only thing i have heard about tahoe people so far is that everyone that lives here gets a dog and a dui, well i have a dog lets hope i dont get a dui xD dont see how i would i have never driven drunk...

my old town the stereotype was that everyone there and in the towns surrounding it were meth addicts but thats so not true the entire time i lived in that town i didnt meet a single person that did that, if that was the case my family wouldnt of chosen to raise me there, my stereotype of my hometown would be its for people to retire in or raise a family... but there were two towns near us that are pretty bad when it comes to drugs and probably are the reason everywhere around them got a bad rep

As for the state i lived in (Nevada) there seems to be alot of stereotypes... i was raised there so i know more about those stereotypes than californias other than california people are wackos which doesnt seem to be true anyways about nevada...

People think that everyone that lives here is a Gambling drunk party animal, not true i mean statistics show that majority of those people are tourists!

people seem to think we have prostitutes legally walking the streets, uh no we only have govt. approved brothels

People that hear about dayton and topaz automatically believe the rest of the state is infested with drug problems... what state doesnt have a town that has those problems?

Alright i found this list that someone posted...

Quote:
1. Horrible Heat
2. Hookers galore
3. Dessert = No scenery
4. Ugly little towns with disgusting bathrooms
5. Ranked 2nd most dangerous state (next to louisiana)
6. Ugly Campgrounds
7. Mean people
8. No History except VA city
9. Too overpriced
10. Nothing but casinos everywhere. Even in chevrons!
this was a person who just drove through it they have no idea Well
1. it really isnt that hot here and the winters get pretty chilly
2. no there arent that many illegal hookers running around since we have legalized brothels
3. it may be classified that way but its not all sand dunes and flat, we have beautiful mountain ranges and lakes and our greenery is actually pretty lush around all the towns. maybe they saw a mirage! lol
4.what towns did this person go to? dayton and topaz? because majority of the other towns are beautiful and very clean :)
5. 2nd most dangerous... REALLY!? lol i have seen more danger come out of one little city in california than the entire state of nevada but whetever if thats how its officially ranked i guess i cant argue with it :P
6. i dont know what camprgrounds they looked at again im assuming its topaz but if they knew all the right spots they would see nevada has some pretty campgrounds
7. mean people!? mean people!! oh no!!!! who knew there were mean people in the world they must only be in nevada!!! what a terrible thing! *cough cough* yea ok theres mean people everywhere... this person sounds mean so im assuming thats the only reason they were mean to them
8. No history!?!?! are you serious what happened we just magically appeared not too long ago preventing us from having any history? theres plenty of history in nevada not just in virginia city
9. lol too overpriced? nevada has reasonable prices compared to the places i have lived and visited, you can actually afford to own a home there
10. nothing but casinos in vegas and reno maybe, casinos are not a huge factor in nevadas economy

alright sorry that was so long im done now

I had no idea there were such others living in Nevada. I guess I don't even have to post anything. But, Synth, why all the mentioning of Dayton and Topaz being such horrid places? I mean, did things happen there that I've been oblivious to? *__* No one out of state I ever speak to have even heard of Dayton or Topaz much less know Virginia City exists. Then Laila mentions that "all the people up there are snobs" near Virginia City. Such thoughts of my own state that I've never heard of. z___z I've never come across any snobs around VC? Actually, I love VC. Everyone there is so friendly.

When people I come across usually hear "Nevada", they automatically think Vegas. When they think Vegas, they think casinos, prostitutes, and a huge ass desert with blistering heat. Maybe even Area 51. No other stereotypes ever come to mind. I'm surprised that quoted person (?) even has that much stereotypical information about Nevada. We're an ignored state save for all that is Vegas.

Well I was born in America, so I guess we are known as obese and stuck-up. Other than that, currently I live in Massachusetts.

According to people, people who live in Massachusetts are:
Angry all of the time
Terrible drivers
Terrible, angry drivers
Have weird accents
Snooty
Impatient

The list just goes on.

My Wind Ensemble director is Canadian, and honestly, he does say "eh?" a lot. However, I don't think all Canadians do it since Mr. Lindhal is strange anyway.

I'm from South Carolina. Apparently I'm supposed to be an ignorant redneck who loves John Deere everything, goes to church every Sunday, cooks with bucketfuls of lard and fries everything. I'm also supposed to be resentful that the Union won the American Civil War and I'm supposed to sound like Scarlet O'Hara.

In reality I'm fairly intelligent, definately not a redneck, I don't own anything tractor related, I haven't been to church in over a year, I barely cook in the first place, I don't think about the Civil War much, and my accent if very faint. One of my teachers asked me if I was born in SC because I don't speak the same way as some of my classmates.

Hm... I am from Florida and the stereotype for the whole state is that mostly old people live there.

But then you have stereotypes for other cities in Florida. These are a few stereotypes for Miami that I can think of. When you say you're from Miami, some people think you're Cuban or you're from Cuba. That everyone speaks Spanish there, and those are the only stereotypes I can come up with right now.

Basically Miami is a mixture of stereotypes if you come to think about it. We have everyone from all over the world, so that means we have all the stereotypes (well in my opinion and kind of).

I live in North Carolina, and it is true there are plenty of red necks around here, at least in the region I live. Most are narrow minded and only see life through colored glasses, but not everyone is this way, but it does tend to be a prevailing attitude.

@voe: well the reason i mention dayton and topaz i personally think theyre kinda hard on the eyes :P and as for having drug problems is because one of my best friends exboyfriends came from dayton and even made her move there with him were he started doing alot of meth she had a hard time getting away from him and my friend noticed alot of it going on around there, i guess i cant say all of dayton and topaz is like it but the one thing i notice is alot more drug busts in the nevada news are based out of dayton and topaz =o not saying the people are all drug addicts, but the community has a bad rep because of those drugs

I don't think that everyone in California is rich. There are lots of people living there that are just struggling to keep up with their bills (but who isn't really???). But I do have to admit, whenever I see someone in traffic that has California plates, I see them as a crazy driver. Because of what I've seen so far, most of them are '^-^

Synthetika - Oh yeah, I forgot about the whole meth addicts thing out here in Nevada. Yes, there have been meth labs and stuff like that found out here. But there are plenty of other states that have had labs found in their states as well.

And for the gambling part, yes, lots of them are tourists who think that they should blow away their money on the slots. The only time my parents even go to a casino and gamble is when they have some spare change. But they usually don't throw in more than $20 into the machine. There are people out here who love to gamble. But not everyone is like that. It's just a waste anyways. You lose more money in the slots anyways.

As for hookers, they aren't even allowed to be around here. They can be arrested. Though I do have a funny story about that. When I was with my ex, we were in Reno at a restaurant for his b-day. And then we left to the bathrooms. As he waited for me to come out, a hooker came out and asked if he wanted a good time, he simply said, "No, I'm gay", and the hooker left XD

And I totally agree with your rant near the bottom. I'm gonna hit just a few points in it though. Someone has to live out here to understand how Nevada really is. And it all depends where you live in Nevada. Yes, it may be hot as hell, IT'S A DESERT, what more do you expect??? Freezing temperatures??? Okay, moving on. Yes, there may be no scenery in some places. But come on, Nevada is a great place to site see. There are tons of places that you can go to that are absolutely beautiful. But for nothing being out here, have people ever though that maybe we use that land for three essential green ways of making energy??? Such as solar panels, geothermal, and windmills??? And for dangerous??? Gimme a break, I hear a lot of stuff that goes down in California. Just turn on Tru T.V., and see how many of those chases and stuff happen in California.

Edit: As for crashes, there are a lot of reasons why people get into accidents out here. Black ice, wind storms that create zero visibility (great example was yesterday, a pile up in Fernley occurred), we are actually safe drivers, but the weather can be a bitch =_=

@Synth; I see. o 3o I suppose they are hard on the eyes, but, they mostly just look like the rest of Nevada that isn't bordering Cali. Dayton has been improving though, visuals-wise. Once upon a time I used to live there yearsyears ago before all the new housing when I was in middle school, I think. A lot of my classmates were weed addicts and delinquents. I could see how that could be so. I never experienced anything other than weed, though. Ever. I still keep in touch with a lot of people from Dayton who are now graduated from HS, and they were/are [still] purely weed smokers.

The fact of the matter is, a lot of stereotypes of Nevada are true, just insanely blown out of proportion. I walk by a whorehouse everyday. I also love to gamble. I know a huge clump of "loose" people that are simply loose because of their surroundings. The weather in Nevada is simple: hot in the south, varying in the north. Common sense. There ARE a lot of slot machines in random gas stations I've come across. Not only is Nevada not just a desert, but it holds [the most?] mountain ranges in the country, if not a lot of them. MOST of Nevada is PURELY historical. Nevada was a huge part of the gold rush. And I'm not talking about stupid VC. It's also a very stupid state. Nevada lacks a lot of education. However, the cost of living is actually very low, depending where you are.

Oh, you beat me to it mentioning the old people thing. I've been other places and seen more old people in some of those places than I've seen here. As far as Miami goes, I'll admit I stereotype it a bit. But it's all based on what I've seen when I go there. I go there quite a bit because of family there, and it really does seem like everyone speaks Spanish there. I feel like I have suddenly ended up in the middle of a foreign country when I'm there because everywhere I go, I only hear Spanish and people always try to talk to me in Spanish without even asking me if I speak it, which I don't, and it irks me to no end. It's such a caught off guard feeling to have a string of fast spoken foreign words thrown at me out of nowhere.

What's funny is I'm actually half Cuban myself but I don't speak Spanish and I mostly consider myself white as far as my culture and language and everything. I live in Orlando and I think people here tend to assume everyone is Puerto Rican if they've got a Spanish name.

As far as Orlando goes, I think everyone assumes it's just a tourist city and it's all about theme parks and hotels and what they see when they come here is the tourist areas, they don't see the rest of the city.

I think people assume too that people from Florida have never been anywhere cold or seen snow or anything like that. I've seen snow plenty of times. I actually really love skiing, and I go skiing almost every year, usually in North Carolina. It's something I actually feel I'm pretty good at, and I own my own pair of skis and everything. Just because I don't live where it snows doesn't mean I can't go somewhere else and enjoy it! I've got a friend in New Jersey actually who will go on about how it's so cold there blah blah blah and how it isn't cold here and I shouldn't ever complain about the cold, even though in the winter the temperature does drop pretty low sometimes. It may not get as cold for as long as it does in other places, but we do get winter here. It isn't summer and sunshine 365 days a year here which people elsewhere love to claim it is.
