Well that's a problem a lot of people have but anyone can pull off the look, I actually see a bunch of guys dressed up as Sakura from Cardcaptor Sakura, Kinda weird but oddly enough some of them can pull it off. I think as long as you enjoy the character and like them it doesn't matter if you don't look like the character having fun is the top priority.
I don't cosplay too much, but when I do it's so fun to have your picture taken, I normally don't like mine to be taken bu at an anime convention eh, why not.

i've only cosplayed once but i loved it.
I have to agree with Tsubasa Rose. if you dont love the character you are cosplaying then it wont be as fun.
[ i cosplayed hunny from ouran high school host club at ACEN ]
i've seen some really good ones and some odd ones as well. but its always fun to see all these different characters every where.

I've done a bit of cosplay. I may do some more later this summer (ie Otakon), but I'm holding out still to see who all is coming to Otakon, and if my friends are going.
If I do go though, I'm so doing Cao Cao. Hooray for long-dead Chinese warlords!

Hooray, indeed, Alegretto! ^_^ I saw somebody cosplay Cao Cao once. In fact, most of the crew were represented in a large group of crazy cosplayers. I still have the picture... somewhere. X-D
As for myself, I've cosplayed twice before--once at last year's A-Kon, and then at MechaCon, also last year. I've done Meryl from Trigun (with one of my friends assisting as Millie), and I've been the blue Tiny Plaid Ninja from the flash clip on Newgrounds and various other flash sites (since last year A-Kon's theme was Ninjas vs. Pirates, I figured it was appropriate). This year's A-Kon will be my third attempt, and I'm doing Rosetta from Kaleido Star.

I've cosplayed a lot. If you're looking for easy known characters... Ed from Bebop is a popular one... And Luffy from One Piece. Kiki from Kiki's delivery is simple as well.

I'm not a very good cosplayer, but I still love it. ^_^ Of course, I don't live near any big anime conventions, so I don't have to worry about that. :D
Anyways, staying on topic, characters easy to cosplay as? Hm, well it depends. Try to pick a character that has a similar hair color/length as yours. Also, pick a character from a well known anime, since those always seem to be the easiest to cosplay as in my opinion. xD Whatever you do, be sure you have fun! =3

I've cosplayed Shani Andras of Gundam Seed, Nuriko of Fushigi Yugi, and a j-rocker, and the girl from Ergo Proxy. Next year I'm going as Tamaki from Host Club Alice in Wonderland style xD
First of all easiest thing ever is j-rocker.
Things from the mleancholy of Haruhi can be found all over goodwill xD
A lot of outfits can be found at goodwill .-.;
Ergo Proxy is easy to cosplay if your hair is the right length, jsut get some spray and have fun with the Amy Lee makeup xD
Also when I was at ACEN there was a lot of people doing L from Death Note. L just has a white tee and jeans, his appearance lies mainly in his hair and eyes xD

I myself don't do a lot of cosplay, but I help out a lot of the locals with their costume design. If you're looking for an easy character to begin with, try to find one whose outfit doesn't require a lot of personal tailoring. Generic clothing, such as a school girl uniform, are easy for a beginner to find and apply. It may not be exciting, but it's a start.
If you want more help, try to find others in your area who have been active in the cosplay field for a while now. Asking people over the Internet is fine and dandy but you really need someone in Real Life to show you the ropes. They can offer better costuming tips than any of us can.

X-DDD And you know, when I was walking around at the con, very few people recognized me, which made me kinda sad, 'cause it was a fairly big con, and I thought more people would know who I was, just from sheer numbers. u_u But I'm very glad to meet a fellow fan of the Tiny Plaid Ninjas!! They are ganz wunderbar. ♥^__^♥
And I also agree with your cosplaying tips. *nod nod* If you're a beginner, starting small is best, especially if it's a costume that consists mostly of things you can find at a store. Schoolgirl costumes are good, because most of the pieces are fairly easy to find. Oh, and I have two words to say: THRIFT STORES. ^_^ They make a cosplayer's life much easier. Plus, if an item is somewhat uncommon (like lace-up boots, which aren't in fashion anymore, or a plain trenchcoat, or something like that), a thrift store is more likely to have it than a department store.
Oh, and I realized I forgot to mention in my previous post: I also have a costume of Gir from Invader Zim. This costume actually has quite a story--the main body of the costume was constructed from a lime green bathrobe. No joke. I added stitches, ears, eyes, a tongue, and a tail, and I wear black gloves and black pants and shoes. I actually had the bathrobe before I thought of making it into Gir, so it was a very happy coincidence. ^_^ So if you see anybody with a costume on like that, holla! X-D

Figuring out which character to cosplay is probably even harder than actually pulling it off. You can spend months working on a really great, detailed costume, but if you pick the wrong character, it will still look bad. Last time I went to Otakon, I saw someone with a great ChibiChibi costume; she even got the hair perfect. The only problem with her cosplay was that she was an adult like me and for those of you who don't know, ChibiChibi is a three year old character.
I've see excellent costumes but on people who were obviously the wrong gender; I'm not talking like a flat chested girl playing a guy or a feminine guy pulling off a girl, but people who didn't even look like they tried to pull off the opposite gender.
It takes a lot of searching to find a character that is right for you, but it's worth it if you take that time. I'd suggest going to an anime image site and just browsing to find a character who looks like you could pull off and enjoy doing.

i'm kind of retracting what i said before or adding to it w/e
i still thin kyou should pick someone you love but also keep i nmind that the furthur you are from that character the more you have to buy to look like them- to make it good.
like my croplay i need a wig and cheast bindings and tones of makeup and contacts but for another character i want to do i just need the outfit
but thats jsut once agian keeping in mind your own limits to what you can do

*casts Recarm on thread*
Phew, it was nice to see this thread in the catalogue of anime/manga threads.
So far I have 2 completed cosplay costumes thus far in addition to a few planned. I love cosplaying and going to conventions and I just wish I had more time to make high-quality costumes for myself.
My first costume was Natsuki from Mai Hime. Nothing fancy like her motorcycle outfit though, just her school uniform. It was pretty easy since I bought the skirt (lucky ebay find) and the shirt. I don't have a sewing machine though so I had to hand-sew the vest. I also spent a lot of time making her prop weapons. They're a little amateur looking, but I'm happy with how they look.
My second costume was more recent but it's one I'd always wanted to make. I made Meilin's battle outfit (from Cardcaptor Sakura). It involved a bit of pattern modification and a LOT of sewing. Again by hand. (There's a lot of trim on that thing... ugh) I also started playing with hair extensions for this one. My hair is long enough to put into the odango buns, but not long enough to form tails too. It was a valuable experience at least... and I plan on remaking it in the future.
I have a few ideas now for the upcoming conventions in my area. First I'm going to cosplay as Gluko from Mon Colle Knights. (Google her, virtually no one remembers her from the old Fox Kids). It's going to again be a lot of sewing, but a lot of wig work as well. Long blue hair.. with complex headpiece. x_x I also want to get together Natsuki's headmaster outfit from Mai Otome. Definitely an easier task.
Ok I'll stop rambling. As you can tell... I like cosplay a lot. *sweatdrop*

I'm really hoping to even GO to a con this year, I know what it means since I want to do cosplay but I don't have much to do it. However I really am at a debate on who to as since the wig is long and black. I've had a few friends who read Hellsing try to help me so far, I could go as Rip, Dark Walter, or one that me and a friend came up Pimp!Alucard. Other wise I'm not sure what to do since my hair is cut boyish which is good if I'm trying to put a wig on. The group of friends that were trying to help me are all doing a Death Note group/skit.

I wan't to cosplay at an upcoming con that I'm going to be attending but I never have any ideas. I don't want to be one of those people who dress up like half the others. xD
Kinda like Naruto and bleach, everyone wants to be the same characters.

Getting the ideas for a cosplay is the hardest part I think. And then there's always the worry that half the cosplayers at the con will be the same person as you! But once you have that idea, you can just go through with it.
I tend to just try and think of characters I like a lot. It helps to flip through manga or watch some anime. I tend to get my ideas during moments when I'm not actively thinking about it or when I'm re-watching something and remember how much I liked someone's outfit.
That actually happened last night. I was watching my bf play persona 3 and suddenly just realized that I want to cosplay Chidori. So now I'm just going to plow ahead and get it done!

well honestly what i think is as long as you look similar or close to the character you wanna cosplay then you're good.
like for example, height wise, just like one other user said, don't cosplay someone who's a 3 year old if you're like 5'11 ^^; that is unless you're being creative, but that's a bit tricky for a first timer.
The height factor plays an important role in cosplay in my opinion. It also helps narrow down the type of characters you can cosplay too! Like for example, I'm 4'11, Ed Elric would be an ideal cosplay for my height. but if i were to cosplay someone of awesome precense and stature like Sephiroth, then the impact of the cosplay wont be as awesome if you were to be taller. even if the costume looks hella tight, my shortness would kinda kill it ^^; If you know what i mean.
oh and hair isnt a problem, that's why we have wigs :3 but i think if you use your natural hair and dye/cut it to whatever character you're cosplaying, it would be more natural and makes your character seem to have come to 'life'. or more believable.
Like if i was gonna cosplay Agito from Airgear, and i so happend to have the short hair, i would totally consider dying meh hair blue for the occassion. but that's what i think. since real hair is a bit more easier to manage. but's it's all up to you ^^
hope that helps you narrow down your choices! and good luck!
