Icy rain fell down in great drowning heaps as the thunder howled and lightning flashed over the forest. The storm had come up on Adam all of a sudden and he was soaked to the bone. This is what he got for wandering so far from home on a mere whim. "Blast it! I have to find a place to get out of this infernal storm!"
Branches slapped at him as he struggled to push his way through the dense bushes. The rain was coming down so hard he could barely see two feet in front of his face. He knew he had to find shelter quickly before he lost what little was left of his body heat and simply froze to death out here in the middle of nowhere.
What little hope he did have was quickly growing dimmer and dimmer as he continued to force his way through the dark forest. Just as he was just about to give up hope, a huge flash of lightning lit up the area. Just up ahead seemed to be the ruins of a castle. What little he had seen had encouraged him and with a burst of energy he went towards the castle as fast as he could.
Finally after what seemed like an eternity, he made it to the ruins. He quickly dragged himself inside and lay panting on the floor, until he could catch his breath. As his breathing became easier, Adam sat back up and studied his surroundings. It wasn't as bad on the inside as it had seemed to be from outside. True, there was a huge gaping hole where he had come in, but other than that the castle seemed to be in relative good shape. He spied some wood haphazardly stacked up against one of the far walls, and with teeth chattering he went to see if he would have enough to start a fire.
There was plenty of firewood. It had been sitting there so long that it had dried out completely and was brittle to the touch. He didn't have a lighter or matches on him, and even if he had they would have been ruined in the rain. Looking carefully where he had found the wood, he grinned in relief. There was a piece of flint just in the corner. Unfortunately, he had nothing in order to light the wood with.
Adam had passed a staircase on his way over to the wood and he wondered if there would be anything up there that would serve as his tinder. He walked over to the stairs and started to make his way up.
