I've noticed that there are tons of bands made JUST to look good, and not for the music. This happens a lot in J-Pop bands but is most certainly not limited to them. I sometimes think that Disney makes a lot of young people famous for their looks too.

What do you feel about the subject? Are there any bands you can think of that were made more for looks then music?

I think that's pretty much the norm for the last few decades -- some bands have a "look" but still have good music, like the Hives, but others are just eye candy -- using tricks and visual misdirection to deflect attention away from the fact their vocal range is from A to B...

I'd say that's true of almost every industry manufactured act. The music sucks, there's no creativity, and everyone looks the same.

But they sell records, though heaven knows why...

They sell so much because they market the band to teenage girls.
They find "pretty boys" who don't sound entirely god awful, fix their voices a little and release them upon the world.
They don't sell because the music is good, it's far, far from it. They sell because the band members are "hot".

Or worse, they aren't "hot", they are just packaged to look better than they are, and the are presented to people as "hot" and people figure if they got a contract and attention, they must be...

I'd say you've both pretty much hit the nail on the head. Personally, I'm not into guys that could pass of as lesbians but apparently that's what the rest of the world considers sexy *gag*

And yet I know even if a band is talented if there is a good looking member I am more likely to go see them.

I think the fact that music and fashion/aesthetics goes hand in hand is simply a part of the package. If you're wasting 10 to over100$ on tickets to see a band you want more than just music- you want spectacle. So if a band has attractive members why not gawk at them? You paid to see this, after all.

I agree with Explodey, however, and I may not have any prime examples, there actually pop artist who have talent, but the company packages them to be a certain way. Almost like selling a piece of your soul to fashion and another piece to the media. You wanted to be a singer, now pay the price that comes with it.
But yes, If I'm going to pay a hundred dollars for a ticket, I would want them to be attractive. Though it souds vain, actually it is vain, thats just the way things are. Of course it has something to do with the culture that makes people this way. In Japan cute and bubbly is what sells. In America sex and vulgarness sells. Also showing some skin. You also have to have a song about love otherwise you're not going to go far. In Korea, most groups are pop and R&B with many interesting colors and fashion choices. However, even with their interesting fashion choices, I couldn't compare them to American artists, sch as Lady Gaga.

I tend to not pay attention to what band members look like UNTIL I see them live unless I'm absolutely in love with their music but then again, I only go to shows if I really love a band so it goes hand in hand. If I just like them then I'm probably not going to bother to go to a show.

I'm with Vix. I don't go to a show unless I like their music. I couldn't care less what a band looks like. I mean, if someone is hot them it's a plus because it does give you some eye candy to look at but it's not needed as long as the band puts energy into what they're doing.

Exactly. Who cares what they look like, we listen to them for the way the sound, not how they look.

Add me to that list -- I don't mind if someone is attractive, but to me, it is all about the beautiful voice/ Everything else doesn't make an impact on me...
