Well, I'd answer to that with Leonard Cohen. The man's lyrics are way too good, and I'd like his music more if I was more fond of the rhythm of his songs.
So, what's the band or singer you really respect, and why?

There are a few musicians I have seen on TV who present themselves and their thoughts in such a way that even if I do not like their music-and some of them I don't! I like what they have to say and how they say it.
Giving good interview is very important if you are a public performer.
That said, I think one of the musicians I respect a lot is Kevin Max. His music isn't at the top of my list of faves- I listen to Christian music infrequently- but I enjoy hearing his poetry and interviews.
I don't like the music of Marilyn Manson, Daryl Hall, or Madonna all that much, but I've enjoyed interviews I've read with them. They're intelligent people who just so happen to be making an art form I don't particularly need in my life, is all.

I don't really pay that much attention to celebrities and such, but Tuomas Holopainen from Nightwish is someone whom I've always admired a lot since I started listening to the band, once I found out who actually wrote their lyrics. I think that a lot of the songs he writes are extremely well-written and much more meaningful and interesting than a lot of more popular music these days.
A lot of Nightwish's lyrics mean a lot to me personally. It seems to me that I tend to think about the sorts of things that most people don't seem to care about, and his lyrics seem to express some of the same sorts of things to me.
I don't really know that much about any of the other band members or what they're like in real life, but he's someone that I definitely look up to when it comes to poetry and lyric-writing ability.
Oh, and this is sort of random, but even though Taylor Swift's music isn't the genre I normally listen to and I'm not that fond of all of her songs, she's also a musician that I have a lot of respect for, just based on what I've seen of her on interviews and such, and because of the fact that she's one of the few pop singers these days who doesn't feel the need to dance around practically naked in her videos and such for attention. She also reminds me a lot of one of my friends; their personalities seem to be very similar.

I respect Eminem above any other performer or artist any day. Not only as an artist, but as a person; to me, it just can't get any better than that.
Apart from him, even though I don't particularly like any of her songs, I do have tons of respect for Katy Perry. She's an amazing entertainer, she delivers, with quality. You don't see that these days.

I love the Hives -- the whole package -- the theme, the get up, the sound, they impish playfulness -- always had a soft spot for it...

There's a lot of bands I respect. Mostly, because of what they've been through and their music is amazing.
Here's my list -
Richard Hawley
The Beatles
The Ramones
Richard Hawley's music is just beautiful.
I used to respect Lady Gaga, but yeaaah..not so much anymore.

Let's see, bands I respect... It's really, REALLY hard to actually respect artists this day and age. I mean almost every single person is entangled in something the media picks up so easily. I give Eminem credit though. He actually talks, in his music no less, about WTF happens to him in the media and the shit he's been through. Not very many secrets there.
Greg Graffin gets a few points from me too. I mean like or dislike Bad Religion... a Doctor, a teacher, two books out, and 30 years as one of the biggest punk rock legends? That's quite a combination. There's also Ron Thai (AKA Bumblefoot). He keeps an eye on his fans a bit, and can talk rather intelligently in spite of being the "replacement for Slash" in GNR. His work is always excellent as well.
There's also a lesser known acoustic artist named Josh Woodward. He's been in the free/pay as you like music business for the entire length of his career, which has been for quite a while for Creative Commons artists. He puts work into his music, for the sake of music. That gets so much respect that it's not even funny.

One artist that I respect and admire is Amanda Palmer.
Her songs and music are amazing and call out to a huge number of people and all for different reasons. She's also a wonderful person who really gets involved with her fans and even helps them where she can!
She's daring and doesn't seem to give a damn about what people think of her!
She's also rather funny, intelligent and very cheeky! :D Which is brilliant!
She knows that it's the fans who 'make' the artists and because of that (and I'm sure because we're also lovely people ;) ) she loves her fans, and in return we love her.

Forgot to add another to my list, Devin Townsend. He can write an amazingly humorous concept album in Ziltoid, then turn around and make an album about addictions, and again when he's out of his addictions make a polar opposite album in feeling about being without drugs in Ki.
The man is a genius, and can show his soul rather easily. Worth a look.

The Cruxshadows. They have this song, "Eye of the Storm", that says things wich all of us might know, but, alongside the years and decades that have passed, everyone just ignores. I believe it says what I cannot, for no one will hear, be it by their ignorance or anything else. That song expresses what all try to hide, for they are truths, hidden in verses, wich make us think about this world, that seems to only work towards money.

- I Love Linkin Park and The All American Rejects. I think they have some really good songs and music videos to go along with it. My favorite song by The All American Rejects is Move Along & My fav by Linkin Park is Headstrong. These are older songs but still really good to me ^_^
And also, the Beatles, who doesn't love them. Just classic.

SCANDAL.
I admire and respect all of these girls in this band for different reasons. But there is one member of this band that I have the most respect for. And that is their drummer, Rina.
Rina has always said she's thought of quitting SCANDAL many times because she thinks she's not good enough and she's holding the girls back. But I don't think that's true at all, she's an amazing drummer. But despite her doubts about herself, she continues to try and get better and have more faith in herself for her fans and the other girls in the band. I have a lot of respect for her for being so strong to carry on in SCANDAL.
I have lots of respect for all of the girls of SCANDAL. All of them are always being themselves, they're never faking it to make someone else happy. I feel like they put a lot of heart into their music as well. I have lots of respect for them.
____
Another artist I respect a lot is Ayumi Hamasaki. Ayumi has an amazing voice and she always stays true to herself. She said in an interview once that she refuses to sing a song that she cannot relate to. If she can't relate to it in some way, she won't sing it because she feels that she won't be able to connect with her fans and that she won't be able to sing it with the right emotion. I have a lot of respect for her for this reason. She cares a lot about her fans and her music.
