I'm just wondering, do any of you think it's a good idea that there should be achievements? You know, like receiving a badge for posting 100 replies, or adding a friend. Why or why not?

personally I don't see the point of achievements, but then again I ignore the achievements in all games I play.

I obsess over achievements in games and things, but I don't think Mene needs them. They tend to preoccupy people and get people doing stuff just for the badge. Like if there was a hundred post badge, you'd get people replying to threads by going. "This is cool, and haha, I got another post for my badge."
Maybe I'm not having enough faith in our community, but I don't want it to go too far.

Ernya and Trisphee have implemented this, and I personally loved it. However, I do find the 'hidden' achievements in Trisphee to be irritating. I'd like to be able to see all that I have to attain.
However, I do agree that they somewhat detract from the site, they make it almost a chore to post, because you feel the need to post like a maniac to get the reward. That's the downside for me. Also, it gets a lot of random adding (which I personally cannot abide by) and a whole host of other things. Spam levels inflating are just another negative factor in this.
I do love the idea of getting these achievements, but I feel it would have to be discussed in depth fully and the pros and cons looking into properly before such a step was taken. Also, a unique spin would have to be put on it otherwise you'll have a lot of people whining that 'you've copied Ernya/Trisphee! They did it first!' and a lot of other things. Sort of in the same way as every single avatar site out there has copied Gaia. It becomes annoying after a while, and ruins what would be a great feature.

Personally, it's something I'd really enjoy myself. I don't think we'll get it for quite awhile, though, if we ever do.

Got to echo CK on that, as it's something I suggested 3 years ago and we still don't have it

I would love a post count badge! *drools* I love watching my post counts grow, so knowing that other people could see this would make me a very happy Echi. xD Though like I said, it may inspire spamming from people, which is the only thing that I would dislike about that reward.

I think it'd be a cute idea, something new and fun. Yeah it could have it's draw backs, but I don't know, I'm always up for something new!
I'd certainly enjoy earning my achievements.

The potential drawbacks are one of the reasons why I for one have never pushed to get this implimented, even though I really do want it.
Have you guys noticed how there's always a contingent of people who will make stuff like this something to complain about? Either through greed or laziness, or both. Or you could wrap those both up and label them entitlement, that works too.
Achievements seem to bring out two particular demons though:
One that makes some people turn a fun feature into a monotonously awful grinder, where they have tunnel vision about achieving the end result and take away 100% of the fun of gaining it.
Another is the "it's not fair!" people who complain about anything that they can't get, or can't get easily. So us thinking up more random achievements that would take people by suprise would again have all the fun taken out of it, by some people getting their WAHpants on because some badges didn't apply to them, but they felt entitled to have all of them.
I know this is another life lesson for some. Having to learn that you're not automatically entitled to everything in life just because you want it. But people should learn that from their parents, not us  I suppose I just get demoralised by us stopping talks on nice fun features because the fact that some people would bitch about them rears its ugly head. :(

That's what I don't like about the internet. Anyone can join them, and at times when rewards or things are offered, people throw basic manners and normal human behaviour out the window just to get the shiny prizes. Annoying, but a fact of life. xD

I think that achievement badges that are displayed on profiles would be cute. I see where people could get a bit competitive with them but that could also encourage users to be more active as well.

I would like it more if menewsha itself had site wide achievements
Like... 1,000 members online at once or something.
Quote:
Most users ever online was 948
|
And to promote buying... have things like 50,000 mennies purchased in one month or something.
That way it'd be harder to obsess over and would be a "goal" we could work towards
--
I would like a quiz for the rules though. I think that would be fun. And have the score optionally public so people would want to get better scores :D (Could do an achieve for X users getting 100% too)

While it may make members be more active in the site it may not really be the member that this site would want. By that I mean people will be just posting or just trying to achieve the badges. Sorta like in Gaia, you have hoards of people just wanting to get all the points and not really participating in the community ya know?
Maybe as a site wide event that will be for a limited time and once that event is over items will be given out according to the amount of points someone received. Idk, I just sorta don't want it to be out of hand like in Gaiaonline. Haha

Given Mene's community as it is now, I think achievements would boost activity, but I don't think it would reach the Gaia level. At least, I really hope not.
I wouldn't want the few bad eggs to ruin something that could be fun.
Honestly I like the idea of posting achievements better than anything else, since that's basically what the site revolves around.
It would be neat if, like on some forums, you get a different title based on your post count.
I also think an option to turn this feature off or hide it would be nice.

Keep in mind that our anti-spam rules would still be enforced, so it's not as if users could run around posting "lala," "for the achievement" and stuff. They'd be forced to actually participate in the community. :P Posting is the main way of getting gold here, so there's already a sizable reward for posting. We do nip spammers in the bud and still have a nice community.

As an Achievement whore in WoW (Lore-Master, Ambassador ect.) This would give me another thing to do in mene. I'd love it!
I think the badges system should be separate from regular items. In fact I think that it shouldn't have any items to go with it at all. Just a cute little sticker book you can share on your profile page, with cute little badges to collect like the "I love Mene" Badge.

Why would we have achievements on a site like this? The closest thing I can think of as a "feat" here is to post [number] times (which is redundant in this gold system), or win an auction.

Between Jelly and my own thoughts, we've come up with loads more possible feats than just those. ;)
But, as has been said, it's not something we're likely to have anytime soon.

Then maybe instead of just having the I <3 Mene sticker, users could choose which sticker to show :O
