It was always hot and humid in Florida, but today seemed to be worse. At least, that’s what Toby thought as he lugged his stuff back into the same dorm-room he’d been in last year. The only difference was that this year he would have a roomie. His light brown-blonde hair was sticking to his forehead from sweat, but still didn’t look bad considering. Of course it was also hidden under his hat. His dark green eyes locked onto the open door of his room. It wasn’t unusual, most of the doors stayed open in Jackson Hall on the College of Daytona campus. Even more so since they’d decided to have co-ed dorms. Toby was tall at around six foot four inches and wasn’t so bad as far as build went. He wasn’t too muscular, but he wasn’t too lanky either. A small sigh escaped his lips as he set down the box that contained his things and threw the duffle bag with his clothes on the floor. The room looked the same and his posters were still up on his side of the room. His posters were mostly of movies and various prints of art that he thought looked cool.

Toby meticulously went about putting his stuff in place, having a certain system for how he liked things. This would take him atleast until his new roommate showed up. He already knew his roommate was a chick, but didn’t know anything else about his roommate. Having a roommate wouldn’t bother Toby since he really didn’t pay attention to much one way or the other. Toby had shared a room with his sister for ten years before he moved out so it didn’t make a difference to him. He was sure nothing could be worse than sharing a room with Cassie, in fact he was positive of that.

Jenna couldn't believe how hot it was, it was upwards of 100 and climbing and to the girl from Hartford, well, this was unbearable. She had just pulled into the dorm parking lot, her black Chevy pulling into the allotted parking place. She sighed and placed her head on her steering wheel, she would need to definitely, definitely take a shower when she finished unpacking. Slowly, she opened the door, pocketing her keys, and plucked out her luggage, setting it on the ground. The rest of her things would have to wait until she had some muscle to move it around. As she herself got out, she gained a few looks, her truck wasn’t that tall, but she only came up to just above the bed of it.

Smiling nervously, she shut her door and made her way across the lot, her red hair flipping behind her head. She rather small in build, so she was positive that she looked weird to everyone else as she lugged suitcases that were at least more than half her weight. Reaching the main doors, she asked around about where her dorm room was. Jenna knew that they had just recently begun allowing the dorm to be co-ed, so she wasn’t surprised when a couple of the girls she asked had no clue where she was headed.

Finally she found her room, her face flushed from the heat she paused just before the entrance to run a hand through her hair and then walked in. Right away she saw that her roommate had already arrived, he too looked extremely warm, “Is it always like this?” she said and then realized she hadn’t introduced herself to him, “by the way, I’m Jenna,” she told him as she finally let go of her luggage. It stood for a moment before falling to the floor by her feet. Smiling again she took a seat on what she assumed would be her bed.

“So,” she began “What’s your name?” Jenna asked him, she figured she might as well get to know him before jut randomly asking him to help her with her other things.

Toby had just finished with the box and put his underwear in the chest that would house his clothes when he heard someone come in the room. He didn't bother to look up and continued putting away his various assortment of shorts and t-shirts since it never got cold there. "Yeah, it is. You'll get used to it." He answered, still not looking up at her. A puff of air blew out of his mouth as he stretched a little and popped his back since he'd been leaning over and kneeling. Toby had grown up in Alma, Georgia where it was about the same as the weather in Daytona.

"It's nice to meet you, Jenna." He said, standing up and looking towards her and all her luggage. "My name's Toby." She looked nice enough to him. She kinda looked like his step-mom with her red hair, but he didn't pay much mind to that one similarity. "I suppose you need help?" He asked, looking at the luggage on the floor and at the expression on her face that he took to mean she wanted to ask a question and was only being polite.

Toby didn't mind. He did like to help, but he never got why girls always had so much stuff. His eyes flicked towards the window for a moment before he looked back at her. "Where are you parked?" He asked, starting for the door.

“Nice to meet you too, Toby” she chuckled when he asked where she had parked, “You got me, I’m parked in the third row out front.” Jena made to stand, “the ‘89 Chevy,” she had not expected him to offer that fast, but she was grateful to get it out of the way. She followed him to the door and stepped into the hall, she noticed, when she got up close, that he was almost a foot taller than her, however it didn’t bother her, since she was completely used to it by now.

As she walked down the hall she turned to him, “Are you new this year? Or a returning student?” she had a nervous tick where she smiled a lot around people she didn’t know, so she knew that she might be creeping him out with her current perma-smile. They passed a few people as they reached the door, a few of them seemed to be new, as they had maps in their hands, Jenna hoped she wouldn’t be like that.

Taking her keys from her pocket again she motioned to her older model truck “That’s my truck, it’s not much, but it gets me around, you know?” Hurrying off in front of him, she opened the doors and went to the bed of the truck to pull back its cover so they could start taking things off.

Toby followed her out to her truck. When she asked if he was new or returning, he answered her with, "I'm returning. Stayed in that same room by myself last year." And then continued to follow her in silence. He had stopped once to help someone figure out where their room was and caught up to Jenna in no time. He spotted her truck instantly and headed straight for it.

"Hey, it's a classic. Besides, it's better than my scooter." He said, picking up as much of what was in the bed as he could while motioning to a neon orange motorscooter that had tons of stickers on it. It was all he could afford, so it would do until he could save up for an actual car with the small pay he got from playing guitar on the campus cafe.

Taking a quick look at his scooter, she giggled, “I like it, it’s…” she paused trying to find a good word “cool.” Jenna finished lamely, she did like it, but it was hard to make a scooter seem manly. Picking up a couple of boxes, she moved to turn and carry some things in, realizing that the boxes were much heavier than she thought they were going to be she almost dropped them. But not wanting to appear a wimp, she carefully she weaved her way in and out of the students. Unable to turn her head to check to see if Toby was following her, she refrained from talking until she knew he was there.

Setting the two boxes down, she peeked in and saw what was making the boxes so heavy; it was her novels that she had packed so she’d have reading material that wasn’t on the reading lists the teachers gave out at the start of the semester. She shook her hand out to loosen the muscles, “Crap…that was heavy” she muttered to herself, as she turned to face the door.

"Thanks." Toby said, lamely, adjusting his grip on the boxes and following Jenna back to the room. It looked like she was struggling a little bit, but he wouldn't be able to help her until she dropped something. So, he enjoyed the semi-silence. Other students brushed against him, knocking him off course. He kept his temper in check and continued on.

A small smile crossed his lips as he set the boxes down. "Would you like me to get the rest of them?" Toby didn't want her to over-exert herself trying to prove she wasn't a wimp. His eyes looked over the books and he resisted the urge to smile. Toby liked to read, but he didn't have too many books.

Jenna watched him moving the boxes around, she wasn’t going to lie, he definitely had some sort of definition hidden underneath that shirt. His question brought her back, she smiled back, “Sure, I can come and get the lighter things if you wanted?” she answered him, catching his eyes being drawn to her books. “You can read some from time to time. It’s not like I haven’t read them all more than once that I’ll miss one or two.”

Giggling, she picked up a couple and placed them onto his bed, “Just to get you started when we finish.” She started towards the door and looked up at him, her head tilted to the side. Jenna flashed him a grin, and turned to head out the door. Looking back to see whether or not he followed her out into the hall.

Toby smirked a little bit before he shook his head. "I suppose so." He said, to her answering him. He looked at the books after she had left the room and kept one, but put the other back. He'd only borrow one since he was a rather slow reader. Then he followed her back out to her truck. This time he grabbed a few more boxes than he had the last time and easily carried them back. He only had to make two more trips before he'd gotten the heaviest boxes and a few of the lighter things.

"So, what made you come to Daytona?" Toby asked, setting his last round of boxes down.

Thinking a moment she absently pulled at her red hair, "I just needed a change of scenery to be honest." Jenna smiled and went to sit on her bed, cross-legged, "and this school seemed like a good idea, it was far from home and I don't mind the heat, it's the humidity I am not fond of." Her small hand pushed her flaming locks back behind her shoulder. Her eyes looking over his arms and she blushed slightly at the memory of watching his muscles flex under the weight.

“What made you decide to come here last year?” Doing her best to change the subject she cleared her throat and focused back on his face. Her face still burning a bit from her earlier glances at her new roommate.

Toby had moved to smoothing out his bedspread as he listened to her answer, a slight smirk crossing his face. His eyes flicked back to her for just a moment. "That's understandable." Toby rarely checked girls out. It wasn't because he wasn't interested or anything, but simply because he'd been raised to respect girls and so he usually did.

He was now sitting in his desk chair, spinning around like an idiot. Toby really didn't know why he'd come here in the first place. He shrugged before answering. "I suppose because it's close enough to home that I can check on my family, but far enough away to be considered a change without me having to move to a place that gets freezing temperatures. Plus, there's the beach just down the road and in the summer I can always decide to stay and have a part-time job since that's the prime tourist season. Of course I usually spend summers at home... and I'm babbling so I'll just stop." He turned slightly pink at the end, but didn't try to avoid his awkwardness.
