Pre Dooms Day

The sun was shining with gentle breeze blowing. Earth as we know it was going about it's daily lives. Children were in school. Sunbathers and surfers were at the beach. Gentlemen hurried to the office. Ladies modeled on the runway. Then a scientist saw what would become the end of an era hurtling through space towards the fragile planet.

It was a obsidian black rock crackling with purple lightening. Unusual was an understatement. In hours, the nations were struggling to come up with a solution for the evident collision. In days, the leading scientists were scheming. In weeks, the world learned of and reacted to the coming event. Terror was understandable. Awe and suspense existed as well.

Dooms Day

The long awaited, and feared, day arrived. The asteroid impacted in the Pacific Ocean created earthquakes and tidal waves the vibrated throughout the Earth's crust. Volcanoes reacted by erupted. All of them. The sky filled with ash and a mini ice age occurred. The dust in the sky killed off a lot of the plant life. Animals starved. Humanity's idea of civilization and sophisticated crumbled. This wasn't the worst of what was to come.

The crackling purple lightning soon filled every ash, dust, or snow storm. It spread until only rare days of blue skies provided relief from the strange phenomena. Those who survived the natural disasters now had a new problem before them.

Post Dooms Day

Ten years later, the Pacific Ocean and all countries connected to it were filled with twisted, and often dangerous, versions of what had been. Plants developed poisonous thorns. Animals such as the average house cat grew fangs, claws, and a veracious nature. Some animals of the same species were affected in different ways creating several new varieties.

The most notable of all was the affect on humans. Many developed small skills. Perhaps seeing a little better in the dark or a love of raw meat. Then a few developed medium skills like amazing accuracy with guns or strength of iron. However, there were those who became leaders: caring or greedy. They were extraordinary. They were mages.

Mages were the few individuals who could make use of the new energy that filled this planet. Some could only work one element that they devoted to learning. Some could use abilities like teleporting or flying. Some could do many things. No mage was like another. So strategy also was incorporated into the art of mage craft. Those who aspired to be leaders had a role unlike any other. Those who were wanderers either caused mischief and assisted how they could. A few took it upon themselves to attempt to rid the world of the dangerous beasts that now plagued humanity. Everyone found a purpose or goal... or died in chaos.

Marsella carefully climbed over a large boulder and dropped down onto the old asphalt road. It was cracked and pitted from years of weathering. Looking around and not seeing or feeling anyone, she started walking down it. It was a lot easier to travel on. She sighed. Riding her wolf was easier but he had to hunt. This would have to do for now. She had been obsessing over what to do. She had spent the last few years wandering around with her new found abilities killing anything that seemed dangerous. That was getting old though. Also, she was a bit lonely. Wolf was good and all, but he couldn't really be there for her.

Reaching a clearing off to the side of the road, she looked it over. A cliff on the backside and plenty of boulders along the sides. She could easily build a stone wall and have a sort of place to stay in there that was protected. It would be a lot of work though and she couldn't afford to end up with no energy should something hungry or violent come along. Sighing, she looked around wishing Wolf would show up.

Saeth had learned little these past years. He knew some sort of catastrophe had occured, but was not sure if it was man made or celestial. He knew it had given him powers, for which had helped him survive. From the little tid bits of information he had collected from bandits and dead travelers he was able to discern that he may not be the only one with these talents. While the prison had been kind to him, he felt it was time to move on to search for some others that may be like him.

Climbing out from under the rubble, he comes to a clearing where the road outside of the prison splits. Unsure of which way to go, he closes his eyes and decides to follow the wind, which happens to be gusting from the west. Shrugging, he begins his journey down the beaten asphalt, kicking an old rusted can along the way ~ wondering what was in store for him.

She hefted another rock into place. This was taking a lot longer than she had thought it would. She had only managed to get one wall built. It was only on one side and barely came over her head. Also, it was just a foot thick. She wanted it a yard think. However, she was getting a bit worn out and that was something she could ill afford. Stopping for the afternoon. She began setting magic wards all around the clearing to warn her if something came. Wolf would be back any time. Hopefully he was thoughtful and would bring food with him.

He barely gets out of sight of his former abode, the prison, before a dusk sets in. He knows well the dangers that night holds. As he begins to look around for some shelter, he spots an old vehicle. Deciding to take advantage of the ready made shelter, he pulls a dusty skeleton out of the back and dumps it nearby. Satisfied with his progress, he settles down to get some rest where the skeleton was resting inside of the vehicle.

Her wards warned her of Wolf's approach. The large, white creature entered her clearing carrying a deer. Yet it was not a deer such as people would have recognized several years ago. It had grown long fangs similar to a sabertooth cat and its feet were sharper. Knowing her preference of no fangs, Wolf had torn them off. She set about to cleaning the deer. Then she began roasting portions of it over a fire she had created with magic. With that started, she built a small wooden structure with racks inside. It came as high as her waist. She put the rest of the meat in there to be smoked. Wolf took the carcus away.

It was a long uneventful night. In the distance Saeth was woken up a couple times to the sound of various howls and screeches, but nothing troubled his hideout. At first light he was up and moving forward. Putting the prison and bed from the previous night behind him. As he made his way out of the city he decided to follow the road west towards what looked like what used to be a forest in the distance. Though most of the tree's look barren and decrepit. He knew he would have to be on guard, as this would be his first time since he awoke to leave the city he knew so well.

Waking up, Marsella looked around from where she was curled against Wolf's side. Another morning had arrived. At least this time there had been no attacks. She needed to regain her energy though. That meant making this place better built. With Wolf here to help push some of the larger rocks, they got to work on finishing the stone wall after breakfast. Deer meat again of course. She hoped to be done by lunch, if possible. Even if she didn't stay in this place, it would provide a somewhat safe way station for travelers. That is as long as they could defend the opening.

As he got near the edge of the forest, the first thing he noticed was a myriad of new noises and smells. Most of which he was not able to recognize. Despite having the beaten road in front of him, he felt it would be nice to leave the road as he continued forward. Careful to keep the road within sight, he made his way through. As he continued forward he began to catch sight of what appeared to be some sort of shelter down the ways a bit. Unsure of whether it was inhabited, friendly, or hostile, he decided to keep it within sight and observe for awhile to see if he could catch a clue on what was ahead.

The cliff to the back provided a wonderful natural defense. The stone wall was a good yard thick and well over her head. She grinned as she used some magic to fit a wooden door to the entrance. With that done, she wavered slightly. Belatedly she realized she had used up too much energy. Wolf slipped up behind her and she leaned against him. Standing there with her head resting against his shoulder, she looked up at the sky. Noon. She finished when she had wanted. "Wolf, go get us another animal will you. We have smoked deer for harder times. Let's have something else for now." Wolf turned and loped out onto the road, cutting into the woods. She turned and went to build up the fire. It was a large fire with a good wide, deep bed of coals.

Watching a large animal leave the shelter, he did not have much faith in there being anything of use left inside. Though curiosity got the best of him and he found himself moving towards the shelter. As he drew near he could smell the scent of burning wood. At the front of the shelter was a door, and without pondering why there would still be a door on this particular place, he opens the door, finding himself face to face with a woman tending the fire he that he had smelled from outside. He was stunned, forgetting his social skills because of his time so far had been spent alone. Or perhaps it was something else. He could sense that something was different about this woman though.

Her wards went off like alarm bells in her heart. Spinning around, she pulled together her magical energy from the small magic currents beneath the mini courtyard into a spiraling circle around her. As she completed her spin, she brought her hands up high over her head where a glowing blue fireball burning in thunderous energy. She had but to thrust slightly in the direction she wanted it to go and it would consume all in it's path. As her gaze swept to the intruder who had triggered the wards she set, her eyes came to rest on a pale male human. His blue eyes registered fear and shock in the glow of her magical light. She quickly took in the worn black outfit. He wasn't used to this world even after all this time of surviving in it. Of that she was certain.

After a few stunned moments he managed to let out a simple "Uh...hey". Which was a joke of a response considering the times they both lived in now. Settling down next to the fire he stares into the coals as if searching for something.

She blinks at him. Was he dense? She let out her magical fire and lowered her hands to her hips. Eyeing him as she paced around to the other side of the fire, she wondered if the purple lightening storms could take a human and transform into another species. He just sat there staring at the fire. At a loss of what to do with him, she decided to try for introductions. "The name is Marsella. And you are...?"

Yeah, what would anyone be doing out here by themselves? She was the dense one. She leaned against the cliff wall and cross her arms to hide her trembling frame. Using so much magic in one day had drained her. "Nice to meet you Saeth. I could ask you the same question."

"I came out here searching for others that may have survived." He said, finishing the statement with a subtle shrug.

Looking up away from the fire for the first time since he arrived, he noticed the sag in her shoulders. As if she was having problems standing. "Are you okay?" He asked.

She lifted her chin proudly. "I am fine. You would have better luck finding survivors in town. At least there you can find a sort of society, if it can be called that. Out in these woods and the countryside is naught but the purple lightening storms, changed animals, and poisonous plants. Unless your familiar with the new species that now run wild or are good at fighting, I suggest you go back." She felt a wave of dizziness pass over her almost at the same time her hands turned cold. Drat. She overextended herself. She felt her body sway and start to fall.

Before realizing that he had moved, he caught the woman before she fell. After a few moments he blinked away the surprise and gently lowered her to the ground. "Apparently you are not fine" As he finished the statement we went back to the fire though instead of staring at the flames he was staring, almost studying the girl.

Grateful not to have another bruise from the fall, but also a bit embarrassed, she sat there with mixed emotions. "I, have used a lot of magical energy today. This stone courtyard didn't build itself." She sat there staring at the fire. He had incredible speed. The purple lightening storms had changed him too. Suddenly her wards went off, but in an informative manner instead of an alarm. Feeling their signal in her, she glanced up at the entrance to where Wolf stood. From his mouth hung a rabbit. A 4 foot long rabbit with foot long fangs and 3 inch long claws. He looked at them assessing the new stranger and as well as her for any signs of danger.

I see, he said as he lowered her to the ground. Looking towards the door he saw the wolf and met its gaze. Unsure of what to make of it, he asks the girl "Friend of yours?"

She looked over at Wolf and grinned, "Friend, yes. And so much more. Big fellow isn't he? Are you used to seeing a wolf that is taller than your waist?" Wolf took in that she didn't seem upset and figured the new guy was not a threat, for the moment. He walked in and sat the rabbit down. With a few swift swipes, he took out the claws and fangs leaving raggedly and bloody edges of meat. Leaving the rabbit for them, he took the scary instruments out to dispose of. She shifted to kneel on her knees and began to build up the fire for cooking the big hunk of meat on. "I am guessing you're hungry?"

"No, I'm not familiar with beasts. In the city we didnt have any other then rats or the average cannibal." Thinking about food, his stomach let out a low growl. "If your offering, then yes I'll take some food." "So where are you from?" "I didnt think there was any other people around here"
