My 5yo son heard about Skylander from some of his pre-K buddies and YouTube videos. Are any of you familiar with this game? Pretty sure it's mostly primarily played on the Wii/Wii U platform.

I'm more familiar with this game that I thought I would be, but I blame working at Toys R Us when it first came out. Skylanders is available on all platforms (Playstation, Xbox, Wii, even DS). When you initially buy the game, you get the game, a portal, and 3 Skylander figures. You can play a good chunk of the game with that, HOWEVER, in order to beat the game, you need a Skylander from each element (I think there were 8 elements).

It's a cute game and even I wanted it. Ok, I just wanted to collect the figures >.> You can buy Skylanders individually and there are also combo packs as well as special packs. The special ones have figures that only come in that pack, as well as having a new level to explore and items to enhance game play.

When Skylanders first came out, it was just that. They are protectors of the land and are characters from the Spyro universe. After I left Toys R Us, they came out with Skylanders Giants as well as another set that you can switch tops and bottoms of pieces with others. Each Skylander has its own set of abilities, strengths and weaknesses as well as different personality and play styles.

We broke down and bought a mega bloks set and discovered they have something similar to a pokedek type of app for iOS devices. My goal now is to be well enough to work so I can buy the Wii U set I keep being prodded by my son to purchase!

I really do appreciate your feedback about this since I haven't been able to check out what's available online.
