If you are like me, sometime in your childhood you picked up a wayward Archie comic and read it. And loved it. And a fondness for the characters grew in you, an sure enough, you'd read a few more.
I'm 25 years old, and I still am occasionally struck by the desire to buy a copy of an Archie Digest.
Sometimes when I'm bored at home, I will read copies of the comics online at Archie.com.
So here I was two nights ago, reading comics online. What do I see in the corner of the page?

WH-WH-WHAAAAT?
Ok, fair enough. Betty, Veronica and Archie have been in a love triangle for 67 or so years... it makes sense to do a story where he finally proposes and gets married to one of them... and upon seeing this add banner, my thoughts were obviously "Well, he;s just GOT to pick Betty."

And what do I see today making its way around the internets?

WHAT?! this just... can't happen... Archie is making a huuuge mistake by proposing to Veronica.
First off, how can he possibly support her lavish lifestyle?
Second, her parents loathe him.
Third, Archie is always going to fall short of Veronica's expectations... and thusly so, she is going to make his life just miserable.

Betty has always loved Archie unconditionally, she is warm and loving and fun and motherly. SHE would make a wonderful wife to Archie.

Anyhow. Lets all discuss how horrible and wrong this is. Unless of course you support this union.... in which case I would love to hear your reasoning.

TEAM BETTY ALL THE WAY!

Okay.. The comic isn't even OUT yet, and the result is out?!
Really.

TEAM BETTY!!

How old were you when you picked up your first Archie?
I think I was about twelve?

i know... I was kind of shocked that they released the cover for the first installation of the comic so soon.... I guess they really want to build up the hype.

When I picked up my first Archie, I was flying to visit family in Edmonton and my dad got it for me to read on the plane. I instantly fell in love with the stories, and was inspired by the fashion pages! I would draw and draw and draw betty and veronica in different fashions all day if I could. And when Cheryl Blossom hit the scene when I was in grade 7, I was ecstatic! Someone richer than Veronica? Yes! Take that Lodge ego down a few pegs!

Well apparently you've got regular access to the comic, which I don't. The copy I got when I was twelve has been the only copy I've ever seen. I got it while I was on vacation with my parents in Vermont.

I agree. Team Betty all the way. maybe something will happen last minute to stop it?

When I was little my mom gave me her old box of archies and betty and Ron double digests. I've thought about picking up archies a couple times in the supermarket checkout line but there's always one story in them now that is drawn in a "new" and terrible style. Also they re-use the short stories and one pagers so there's always a chance I'll open one and see something from my mom's collection.

Go go Team Betty!!
She is so awesome, she happily attends car shows with him, bakes him cookies and can paint and dance and play chess and arm wrestle with reggie and hurt his arm. Veronica should be with Reggie she sure dates him on the side enough anyways.

Also I read in one old archie that there once was a special book and TV special called "from Riverdale and back again" or maybe to riverdale instead of from but it supossedly explained what happened to them all after they graduated and I don't think he married either but i don't know.

It's a six part story and they always give shocker covers maybe he's just practicing with ron for a play or he picked up her earing then asked her to dinner :XD

See the thing I don't get is...Archie's 16. He really shouldn't be proposing to ANYONE. I doesn't make sense. I admitidly have really got a bit of a hate on for the modern Archie team, I've bought issues where ALL the stories were repeats. -.- And the last time Archie kept up with the times was like 1985 Oo

That makes me mad. Veronica is such an airhead. Why would he marry her?? I mean Betty and Archie are perfect, yet he sticks with Veronica. What a schmutz! Pooh on you Archie! I hope you are unhappy for the rest of your life.

Well actually I hope he gets cold feet and ends up with Betty! LONG LIVE BETTY AND ARCHIE!

It's weird too because he says he doesn't care about ron's money but betty and veronica look exactly the same but with different hair and temperaments. I know they are drawn that way, but really they still have the same figure

Really?
Is it really about looks?
That's all they have in common, is their figures.
It's the typical triangle: Betty's the girl next door, which some guys eventually find boring, especially after knowing them for a while. 'Ron, though, is still kind of exotic, considering the amount of time she spends traveling, and the way she keeps up on fashion (and thus appears to be ever-changing, aka always new).

Alright, but in the end betty and veronica have been the "girls nextdoor" to him since childhood. That is of course assuming that what happens in Little Archie Digest is cannon. Which I will assume that it is since the lil'Archie character Ambrose moved away in lil archie and then came to visit the Riverdale gang when he grew up.

And both have nice and noticeable figures, and veronica is "exciting" in a kind of snobbish, dresses sluttier,
"I'm better than you are, and I call you names when you can't scrape together enough money to take me out on fancy dates, but somehow still profess to like you" kind of way... :stare:

The thing is that Archie would have to be a complete moron not to realize at least sometimes that betty is more important than ron's temper and jealousy make her. Which is something he realizes momentarily when betty's father get's laid off from his job and Ron yells at Archie when she finds them hugging on the sidewalk after betty leaves her house crying. At that point he yells at Ron for her stupid jealousy and haughtiness while betty was in trouble. Showing unlike in other stories that he can function as a man who makes his own decisions and not as her love slave who constantly takes her abuse.
And in some stories Archie is so abused by Ron that he has to enlist Betty's help to improve himself.
While Betty slaves away to help archie in improving those things that Ron and Reggie make fun of him for and in the end he's so thankful to betty that he happily goes out with Veronica and tells her shes a "real pal".

So if they look the same and he's known them the same amount of time and the only differences are that Betty treats him like a king and Veronica treats him like crap but is rich .. and therefore "exotic"... then I guess it's about the money.
Which is the point I was trying to make in my last post.

Who knows maybe if the book were a bit more adult all that betty would need to do in order to tip the scales is to "put out" first. Or maybe the red haired idiot would use their competitive nature to get some out of both of them for awhile.

The point is that all it seems to take to get archie to pick a wonderful lady over an abusive one who tortures him by giving him time limits to get the money needed for the show she wants to see or else she'll go with Reggie... is money.
And if he's really that stupid then Betty shouldn't be wasting her valuable time on him in the first place

And by the way the first post on this is from May. Has anything actually progressed in the story line?

And again, I have to add that there's also the "chase" factor to it.
I wasn't just calling Betty the 'girl next door' and excluding Ron for nothing.
When I say 'girl next door' I don't just mean the girl who grew up with him. What I'm talking about is the whole nice girl personality: she's a pal, selfless, dependable, nice (arguably to a fault), someone who, if it weren't for her subtle-yet-obvious femininity, would blend in as one of the boys.
Ron, quite obviously, is none of that.
Ron, because she demands, criticizes, and makes ultimatums, keeps the boys on the chase. She draws them close with promises, then holds them off by saying their efforts aren't good enough. Rinse, repeat.
Like it or not, most guys like the chase. That's why they say the nice guys finish last: nice guys don't necessarily appreciate a chase, therefore don't have patience for it, ultimately to lose the girl who demands one.

But that's a good thing because girls who f (pardon the language) around like that aren't worth it.
I bet that almost without exception no girl who acts like veronica lodge would ever change after marriage because she's spent a good deal of her transition from child to adult learning that treating people like crap gets her the results she wants.
Which makes all those chasing guys morons who end up with a bitch and the nice guys end up happily with Betty types.

I don't think that its that "nice guys don't necessarily appreciate a chase" though.
I think that archie appreciates the chase. In one story Ron's father tells her to act like Betty and when at the end of the date Archie tells her father that he found her kind of dull She shrieks at him and he rejoices that she's gotten back her "charisma" which he loves.
I think the reason that "nice guys finish last" is that they don't have the deviousness of someone like Reggie to trick the other guys after her into making fools of themselves.

Oh, I wasn't saying Archie doesn't, I was just talking about some guys in real life.
As for the guys who end up marrying Ron types, I can't help but to think that if they survived courtship and engagement to finally end up married, then they're probably strong enough (or at the least, rich enough) to handle a woman like that. Someone who's a cross, I'd imagine, between Reggie and Archie, with more of a leaning toward Reggie's deviousness, because, let's face it, you'd need to be devious to deal with a high-maintenance person.
