Uniforms started in our district only on elementary levels. Eventually uniforms reached the middle schools and it stayed at that for a while. This year I found out that our high school is going to implement uniforms next year. It doesn't affect me because I'm graduating this coming Saturday (YES!!) but I started wondering ... How is this going to affect the rest of the student body? The students have to pay for their uniforms, and I have no idea how much they will cost.

I think uniforms are silly only because it's a waste of money because I know a lot of these students put time and money into their clothing, only to have their only form of expression raped from them. I know families are going to be angry with the costs, but hopefully the school will implement some kind of payment plans for low-income families.

I only like uniforms for the idea that everyone is wearing the same thing, and there will be no rules being broken, such as short skirts, flashy blouses etc.

How many of you have had to wear uniforms? What do they look like?
What's your view?

lol I don't think there will be major problems with guys and uniforms. The girls I think will wear knee length skirts or pants. Nothing too sexy about that, they aren't the cute Japanese looking uniforms. If they were, I'd buy one XD

The local middle school makes them wear blue polos and khaki pants or skirt. Really, really plain XP

I'm glad I got out of having to wear uniforms lol I'd be mad because I've spent a lot of money on my clothing.

We might be getting uniforms in our district, at the elementary levels.

The students HATED it, but the parents LOVE it, so it'll probably happen.

They claim it'll help lower bullying and clothing violations, but we'll just find new ways to look different.

Personally, I could go either way about it. I don't really care one way or the other.

I go to a Catholic high school so I have to wear uniforms. They are very plain (white shirts and navy blue pants). Plus, girls can't even wear skirts anymore because they were banned in the first year, so everyone is stuck with pants. It gets very hot in the summer ><;;
The uniforms are very expensive to get two full outfits would probably be close to $400. So I personally don't think you save money from having uniforms.
There are also lots of ways to break the rules even with uniforms. Many students wear shoes that aren't completely black and wear hoodies on top of their uniform shirt.

I haven't been in school for ages, but one year in high school I started to wear my own school uniform. |Db "Inspired" by animu, but still modest. White blouse, knee-length grey pleated-skirt, green neck-bow, knee-socks & penny loafers. Also a blue blazer for the cooler months. xD;; ...I never did make it to winter semester to wear the blazer... ;~;

I think as long as they have advance warning, costs shouldn't be too much of a problem. School uniforms (the generic kind) are super cheap, and kids go back-to-school shopping anyways... It's probably way cheaper in the long run than the usual $60 sneakers, $40 jeans, etc etc.

...Oh wow I just realised what my avatar is wearing. HAHA. XD

I've gone to Catholic school for 11 years and have had to wear a uniform for all of them. It's not that bad. I mean, it gets annoying when the weather disagrees, but it simplifies getting dressed in the morning. It also does stop the animosity caused by different people wearing different clothing. There's the psychological effect to consider as well. Because the uniform is worn only at school, it tends to help people get into a learning mindset that differs from the rest of the day. It's also REALLY satisfying to throw off a sweater/tie/etc. when you get home or get out of school. The transition will be difficult without a doubt, but people get used to it and still dislike it, but don't care all that much.

I don't know. There are two things going on. It kind of helps people to blend in, but this could also be looked at badly. However you are in a learning environment. You don't really need to be particularly special until you get out of school. I feel uniforms are a good idea even though I have never had to wear one in my life. xD

Personally, I don't like wearing uniforms because it defeats the purpose of a person's personality. I have worn a uniform before. It was a white shirt, blue pants, and black shoes kind of thing. I didnt like it because my favorite colors weren't in it.

o_O

A person can still have a personality while wearing a uniform.

It's not like they're less them because they're made to wear something they might not normally wear.

I think my school is getting uniforms next year..
I'm scared because I won't be able to pick my favorite people out of a crowd by looking for a shirt color..
And I won't be able to dress cute for my boyfriend. :c

Well, if it's anything like my school, they can accessorize every single detail of their uniforms. For example as long as they can see the red collar and we have on black pants, it's fine. I don't know how that all started, but I guess it was the fact that we still needed to express originality. Some other schools are strict about it I guess. I may not be going to the same school next year so no uniforms w00t!

Also, I think uniforms in high school aren't needed that much. Elementary sure, Middle maybe, but high school nothx. I understand the occurences of gang violence and the distractions and sometimes the inappropriatness of the attire, but c'mon, teens do dumb stuff period :\

Has your parents ever showed you their pics of them in high school with the tall hair and the collars that go 2 feet over their heads? My point is-Teens will be teens. *shrug*

i had to wear uniforms in high school they weren't very strict it was more of a color code.

we had to wear red, white, or blue solid colors (no jeans). it did make getting ready in the morning a lot easier but it didn't really help make everyone equal because we could still wear whatever accessories, shoes, jackets etc that we wanted so there were a lot of people who managed to make unique outfits.

i don't think public schools should have uniforms only because they can get really pricey and some families cant afford it.

There isn't anything wrong with uniforms. I had to wear a uniform the entire time I was at school because I'm from England. My high school was pretty strict about it cause it was in the middle of a Moravian village and we weren't allowed non-uniform days any more because the people in the village complained about what the girls were wearing as well as some girls just didn't turn up because they didn't think they had good enough clothes. The first, second and third years (Year 7, 8, 9) had to wear a green shirt, navy skirt/pants and a navy jumper with the school logo on which was a sheep, we used to get extremely bored and compare sheep because some of them were fat and some where thin :XP. When you got to fourth and fifth year (Year 10, 11) you had the same uniform but a blue shirt instead of green. When I got into year 11 they changed the uniform but they let us design it, the only problem was they picked to worse one! That girl got her ass kicked, it was pretty much the same uniform except the skirt had green pinstripes which made the year 10 and 11s look stupid because they have blue shirts and green pinstripes plus the skirt looked stupid anyway.

I think uniforms are all right as long as they don't look stupid like the school near my uni those poor kids have a brown blazer and brown skirt/pants. I don't get the people who say "you can't be an individual in a uniform" I still got bullied for being a mosher when none of them saw me outside school. You just use different ways of being yourself. I used to wear my band hoodies instead of a coat, got in trouble in church once for that cause my hoodie had a skeleton on fire on the back and I hadn't realised we were practising the chrimbo service that day :XP.

I can understand how uniforms would make picking an outfit in the morning easier. But I just don't like how it rids you of your personal expression, but oh well XD

We have uniforms at my highschool. (private of course.)
And personally, I think they're a good idea.

School is a place to learn, not particularly to showcase your fashions.
It cuts down on fighting because we all wear similar things.
And there are other reasons; no need to make a list.

We have three different colored polos, two colors of pants.
Several skirts. Assorted school sweatshirts. And strict enough rules.
Nobody wants to see your crack and such in the hallways.

Besides, wear what you want after school.

EDIT: They're not that expensive either.
If you can afford to go to my school, you can afford the clothes. xD

@Din: At least you have color variety. The middle school here only allows blue shirts, and khaki bottoms. Your school doesn't seem too strict.

And yeah, you can wear whatever you want after school. School is a place to learn and get a good education.

Uniforms are actually a good idea. I understand people have expression but with the way in which students act its not so good. I am in a school that doesn't have it and some times I wonder what parents think to let thier children dress with barely any clothes on or stand out in the winter with just tee shirts. Plus no on sterotypes anyone else because everyone is wearing the same things. No kid will go into the hallway and say ew look at what that girl is showing off everyone will be the same. It also like din says it cuts down fighting . You learn about a person by what they say and who they are, not what they wear.
-sigh- somethimes I wish I could wear a uniform like I did when I lived back in the city...

I know. Thank goodness. xD; The stuff looks pretty nice too. Comfy.
It's different in high school though. Catholic middle school has pretty narly outfits.
Like the girls' 'skirts'. Ankle-length. Ugh.

And we find ways to bend the rules too. People will wear black socks and such.
(they have to be white) Or wear uggs. Or dye thier hair.
Nothing too extreme though.

@Pina: I didn't know you were on here too love. <3

@Din: Haha! You have to be creative eh? Could you wear pins on your clothing? And as far as shoes go, did they care?

Ugh, ankle length skirts, that must have sucked so much.

Of course! :> I think they have to be dress shoes, or tennis shoes. Heels only if they're like one inch. We have a whole damn rule book. Only flesh colored stockings. We have the three inch rule for shorts and skirts. Not above or below three. Not sure about the pins. Backpack for sure. Probably though.

I'm glad I went to public school until highschool. :] Although we pretty much had to wear jeans and blue/white/grey.
Not too restricting though.

I think they are brought in mainly for the bullying.

See when someone has Less money than another pupil, there clothing isn't as quite good quality,
so they have the Micky taken outta them for it,
but if everyone has the same uniform,
has to pay the same amount for it,
then everyone is equal.
it makes life alot simpler.
