Not because it is bad music or anything. I'm not talking about saying the song is so impossible to listen to due to just not being something you like, and it makes you sad.

I'm meaning things you hear, and you just want to burst into tears, or to turn it off as fast as you can because it brings up memories you wish it didn't.

For me? I have two that just come to mind instantly. The Bed Song by Amanda Palmer:

And You Must Love Me from Evita:

They just break me apart, and I can't even get through those videos without having to turn it off or I'll start crying from heartache

What about you?

the closest ive ever gotten to crying because of a song is from you are my sunshine.
i mean, do i need to explain it? im like 500% sure its about like, dead babies or somethin! its such a sad song... who listened to it and went "IM GONNA SING THAT AT BABIES NOW"?!
i guess the other time would be terrible things by mayday parade. which im pretty sure is about a dead mother.
why do people sing about dead things???

I imagine they sing about dead things, because it hits hard for a great deal of people. And that they feel a certain way, wanting to share it with others. A hit to the heart is a great compliment to a creator.

Which makes me think of Pompeii by Bear's Den. It is also very heartbreaking, and about a dead mother. Well, more about the hole in his life that the lack of her left. How it hurt him and his father a great deal.

I just listened to Terrible Things, and I'm fairly sure that they wrote it because the loss hurt them, and they wanted to get it out. Nothing quite like telling others as a catharsis.

yeah, that'd make sense. i guess it is kinda silly of me to assume they wanna punch all of their fans in the heart.

another song that breaks my heart, if you dont mind me adding, is our graduation song! it's a mashup of viva la vida, use somebody, dont stop believing and this little light of mine. i guess none of those songs are particularly sad, but smashed together along with growing up and going to high school, it's just too much.

Yeah, mashups/medleys are just fine! And that's exactly what I'm talking about. The song just jams into your heart because of the memories associated with it

You get dropped right back into what it makes you feel because of hearing it.

Bringing the Rain by Len Kagamine and Skeleton Life by Rin and Len Kagamine. They're so beautiful and I cry whenever I watched the videos. They lyrics bring back so many memories.. I still listen to these songs. I just can't listen to them without crying.. ;-;

that song in Disney's movie Dumbo...where the mother swings Dumbo from her trunk because it is the only thing she can use to physically reach out to touch him...motherly love sad...

because she'd been classified as mad by the circus people because she tried to protect Dumbo from the bullying children and the rest is the story

Aimo, the Macross Frontier soundtrack, NOT the battle version. Even though half the lyrics are supposed to be in an alien language or something, and don't really mean anything, and the other lyrics aren't sad, it's the tune, Megumi Nakajima's voice, and the elaborate off-vocal score, it's just so beautiful and sad. (Unfortunately all the music can only be heard with speakers. Though headphones are ok.)
Witch by Megurine Luka (with vocals by a lot of other vocaloids.) The story is sad, but smilier to Aimo, the collective music has impact. You have to check out both these songs!
Inexplicably, Kokoro (the Rin and Len mixed version) made me tear up. Half the vocaloid songs are tragic and I've gone through them fine and this is the one which makes me tear up, and the same thing happened to my friend Nilu-chan. I suppose there's some deep psychological reason for it and I don't know myself well enough :P

Ling: Oh jeez, you made me remember the song, and then I had to go listen to it, and now I'm all sniffly

starferry: I'll be sure to listen to all of them when I stop having my heart squeezed from Dumbo's mother's song. Thank you for recommending them

I know...right Zira Angel...I cried just thinking about it when I typed that post...and it does it every time I watch that part of that movie because I think being forced away from someone you love is sad...probably a mother's day mood thing too though...

Zira Angel, thanks for replying, I know most people don't reply to posts even on their own threads and it makes me feel, even though I know it's not true, that they might not have read my reply hehe (embarrassed sweat drop)
Oh... I didn't think you were asking for song recommendations, I thought you were asking us to name songs that make our eyes think there are onions nearby! (indignant) But oh well. Aimo and Witch are good songs, even if they are overwhelming personally for me.

starferry: It isn't recommendations, I am genuinely curious about songs that just break a person's heart. I like listening to them when mentioned, since it's always nice to expand out your musical tastes

And of course I'm reading the replies :V Why wouldn't I?

That's nice of you. I don't know what it is but people seldom check out stuff other people rave over, me and my friend discovered that when we were trying to win manga converts :P
Of course I know people read the replies on threads they started; I just don't feel like they do it unless they reply :P And that's just me.
Try 'Perfect' by Alanis Morisette,
'Passage' by Vienna Teng and
'Me and a Gun' by Tori Amos, all with lyrics.
And if you ever want song recommendations just message me. (We should probably friend each other? Hope I'm not being presumptuous?) I'm full to bursting, and I've got nobody to unload on

I find that a lot of song that make me cry, usually have melody's that just... I dunno, pull n a heartstring. Lyrics aswell, but melodies more often than not. The first video here is the melody at the end of Wonderwall. The second one is the lyrics, the melody and the video combined

Yeah like 'Creep'. I listened to that and I haven't touched Radiohead with a ten-foot pole since then... it's not that it breaks my heart, that song, it just makes me feel utterly hopeless like 'its gonna stay that way. nobody's going to do anything. and why? he doesn't deserve it, she doesn't deserve it...'

Probably Skin by Rascall Flats.
I feel really bad for anyone that has to deal with cancer, and that song I can sorta see happening to someone. It would be not only devastating, though, but for some people it could get embarrassing. I just feel so bad for them...

You know, even thought it's the most famous Radiohead song, I don't like Creep. Is that odd? I don't think so but...

Oh goodness.

Annachie Gordon - Loreena McKennitt

When I first listened to this, I curled up the chair and just cried.
