The details were sketchy at best with this new job, and that is something that Abney - or just Aby - did not like. Too many things left up to chance and in the air, and that just made her more paranoid than ever before. No word on how many victims, no word on what they were dealing with - they were just ordered to go in with Hazard material suits, watch their step and tend to the victims that were still alive. That in and of itself told Aby that she needed to prepare for the worst. At this moment, her and her fellow teammates were packing any and everything from a simple virus to advanced medical care. It wouldn't be the first time they were sent in and had to do a surgery on the floor of the place. As much as Aby hated to do it - it was her job and she dealt with it. Pushing herself out of her thoughts, Aby put her long black hair up in a bun, pulled her scrubs on and threw the skinny jeans and loose camo shirt that she came to work in a bag and zipped it up, throwing it behind her, she followed the team leader out of the room and into the elevator.
Uncountable hours, sleeping, chapters in her book, and conversations with Nicole later - they were finally at Ground Zero and Aby did not like the feelings that she got from it. The city - yes, a city - wasn't huge but it wasn't small and the death tolls kept rising in her mind since she knew how easily it could spread and how fast with mass panic and such. Biting on her lip, she fellow the team leader in reluctantly then decided to do her job. The Haz-mat suits were clunky and uncomfortable but it was required for the inside of the city. The few few bodies were nothing but burned, unrecognizable corpses which made the unsettled feeling in her stomach worsen. The more they went through, the more it looked like a battle zone - like thousands of people just staged a riot that had gone way, way too far. The number of bodies they were collecting was too much to put into the body bags they had bought so they just lined them up on the sidewalk for the moment. Most of them had bite marks, some had bled to death due to the chunks ripped from them or looked like they had been shot, beaten, stabbed or pushed down steps. Everything just was not adding up in Aby's mind as more time went on. More and more bodies were piled up and - soon - the total was well over a hundred. During a break, Aby was knelt down, staring at the pile of bodies and trying to imagine why some would do this to others. Were they dealing with a bombing? A serial murder or murderers? And if that was the case - were they still within this city and were they next? Just too many things did not add up in her mind and it was giving her a migraine. Jason's sudden scream shattered the too-eerie silence that covered the area. They rushed over, seeing one of the bodies move though Aby didn't know how that was possible - there was a gaping hole within his neck and he looked as if he bled out hours ago.
Not knowing what they were dealing with, they treated Jason and looked at the moving body, who couldn't move too much due to the fact of it being buried under many others. "What the hell..." Aby whispered before Nicole gave a scream of: "Abney! Move!" The pile of bodies had more and more moving and the group of them began to back off. Scraping noises and loud moans made the group turn all around and see more and more bodies coming toward them and they didn't know what to do. They disregarded most of the things they had set down and began bolting through the city, struggling to find a safe place to stay for the moment. Several miles later, the silence coated them again and Jason got worse, feeling just over all ill. They stopped, taking shelter for a moment while they tended to him and had Aby and Nicole look out. The two conversated for a little while to pass the frightening and confusing time. As Jason got more sick, the rest of the group began to get unsettled and everything went to hell afterwards.
Ten hours later, Nicole and Aby were running down the street toward the city entrance, hand in hand. Their haz-mat suits were gone, they were covered in blood, and the two were hurt, traumatized, and desperate. With a hoard after them, they tried to out run them and get to the door that led out of the city since it was barricaded in after the death toll rose. Nicole was grabbed by a person in the ally and Abney had her in a death grip, seeing as how she wasn't about to let her friend go. "Abney... go... just go... get out!" Nicole whispered, her voice quaking in fear and terror as tears fell. Not a moment after, Nicole was ripped from her and she screamed down the ally. "Nicole!" Aby screamed, but pushed off of the wall and ran toward the barricade but the door began to close. As soon as she got there, it was closed and she pounded on it. "No - let me out!" she shouted, pounding on it more, trying to open it. "Let me out! You can't do this to me - this is murder!" she screamed, then gave up and turned around too see the hoard still advancing on her. Cutting her losses, she ran down a back ally and tried to get away, knowing she'd go into shock later from the events that transpired.
