Although online ordering is always easy and convenient I feel that I miss out on the culture of bookstores. Just the smell of entering a bookstore is amazing. The ability to see and touch the printed covers and read the backs of books, to leaf through them. These things make a trip to the bookstore worth while.

I honestly prefer the book stores. Why, you may ask? Simply because it is good to know the people you are dealing with. I do not very much enjoy doing online transactions. Mistakes happen.

Going to the stores, over time you get to know the cashiers. Threw this, you can find out about upcoming offers and book increases. Sometimes you can get the books a day or two prier to release, if they have come in. I have gotten 1 that way that I was desperate to get. :D

Plus people are better to deal with. Espicially if you are planning to get a job at a book store. Referrals come in handy. :D

  • I've never bought anything online since I don't like the feeling that you might not get what you actually want. Also, its sort of scary using the online to buy books or anything that is.

Soo, I prefer going in book stores and actually browsing around and looking at the books to know exactly what I'm going to get. I also like the feeling of knowing who I'm going to buy my books from, also if you go there lots of times, they occassionally give you discounts. ;D

In 99 per cent I buy in a book store. I am a bookseller (and thus i get 30 per cent off from books... that's great for here in germany books have a fixed price according to law, the publishing houses fix the prices and every bookseller throughout the whole country and also the internet sellers have to stick to the prices. For new books, that's it), and love to look through the shelves. i often order something at our store or go to there store where I learned my profession. I just order online when i want an import title I do not get via wholesaler or if it's a great deal cheaper...

This doesn't really make me want to buy from the bookstore more so than online, especially since my bookstore won't be able to get the book that I want, but I've been waiting for a week or so for Amazon or Barnes and Nobles to put up this book by my favorite author and they did. But on Amazon Japan!!!! Which means I'll have to wait a while more before I can order it...

So another thing against online, you have to wait for a book to be posted before you can even pre-order it.

I go to the bookstore whenever my mom can drive me there. XD I would walk...but it's like 18miles, and takes me about a hour and half to get there. *Pokes self for being a slowpoke.*

If my mom lets me, though, I'll spent an entire day at Barnes&Nobles, curled up in a comfy sofa chair, sipping a latte and reading a book. Days like that don't come that often though. ^^

I go almost once a week. At least three times a month.

I prefer bookstores, because I can flip through the book, or even sit down and read half of it, before I decide to buy it. I also like smelling the books :]]

I'll use bookstores - second hand; there's plenty in the town where I live, and they're some darn cute and smell wonderful and dusty! - then order over the Internet if it's something I can't find.

My favourite firsthand bookstore has to be Waterstones (because it's so huge), then Sussex Stationers/British Bookstores (because they do brilliant bargains), then WHSmith (ditto), then Borders...

The difficulty with Amazon is I have to use my Dad's accounts and stuff, and I hate being in debt.

i think each has their good and bad points but i ultimatly prefer shops because then you can get hold of the book yourself without it being lost in translation in online ordering, but in online ordering you can get books that aren't available in any store because their rare or out of print,
I like book shopping better its very relaxing and you can pick up and write down new books or authors that have caught your eye but you just can't buy (hey that rhymed ) *giggle* you shouldn't knock either process much, you'll use both in your life so there's no reason to dislike it (too much)

So true i use my Dad's account too, but there are always "problams" with the ordering with him
I love your firsthand list, except
my Waterstones is tiny (compared to the London one near the Academy of Arts place) there is no Sussex Stationers/ Britsh Bookstores where i am, but there are no serious complaints against smiths since its a general store so i can get other stuff there and my Borders is huge and good ordering system though it sometimes takes awhile for things to get there because the books are mainly by American authors (so about a month by the boat they use )

I prefer going to the bookstore as well, but if I'm looking for a very specific book I don't mind to order it online as well. As you all said the stores are just magical and make you just feel the booky athmosphere.

I visit the bookstore at least once a week, but usually I go there more often. I just need to walk 15 minutes to reach the city and there are plenty of nice bookshops to look at. :)

I'm always at the bookstore. I probably go once every week and get, like, five books. If the books are short, I end up going back, too. It's an addiction, I think, and I have no idea how to get over it other than to just give in and read like a maniac. I find that if you go the the bookstore as much as I do, you generally know where you should find pretty much anything.

That said, I would probably enjoy ordering online far more because I'm really starting to hate the people who go to the book store. Seriously. There's always a ton of kids who somehow escaped the children's section and are wandering around. Then there are the preteens who think it's cool to play tag around the area from the drama section to the sci-fi section. And I can't leave out the newly-teen girls who sit in the young adults section and giggle while blocking the aisle and reading magazines. The real kicker is that one woman who can't stop carping on about her coffee at the cafe andends up slowing the line to a standstill. Gah! I really dislike most bookstores.

I prefer going to book stores. I like being able to hold the book in my hands before purchasing it. Also, I prefer skimming the books in a variety of sections to find something new to read. I feel like I can't really do that online unless I have at least one book title in mind...

Well, the internet is more availible to me,as I can't drive yet,but I still prefer physicly going to the bookstore...Especiely Barnes&Noble, the coffees they have there are just about the only kind I like,so it's kind of an off-topic incentive...

I'm a complete sensualist, so the actual going to the bookstore is a total must for me. I mean, I'm there so often, they know me by name. That said, I have ordered books online successfully before.

I rarely buy books, and I rarely buy ANYTHING online, so I'd say bookstores.

I use both depending on the situation. If I need to get a book for school and am too busy to go to the bookstore and get sucked into thumbing through random literature, I order online. If I have time, though, I definitely like to spend my sweet time rifling through the shelves for random books which may catch my interest. Plus, there's something nice about bookstores that cannot be achieved elsewhere. I suppose it's the feeling of having all these books to peruse through... <3

I mostly use the books store because I'm poor right now.
But I really, really prefer to buy my books on line.
I'm into really random stuff like out of print books and books on obscure subjects. Like certain historical figures are harder to find books on than others. Or you can find general books about the history of a country but not specific books... so once I'm on co-op I will be doing most of my shopping on Amazon.com. It's much easier on me to be able to get the actual books I want... I can't say I'm running out of books to read quite yet because I can still pick up about 20 books on any given trip... but it's nice to get exactly what I want instead of what sounds somewhat interesting.

Edit: In answer to how often. I usually go to the book store once a week.

I would prefer book stores.
Don't you have to pay extra if you want to order?
I mean the mail fare and everything.
Also, book stores let you read the book while you're there. Like chapters. I love chapters and indigo. They always have the books I want in stock. (I guess their supposed to)

I prefer book stores. If the books are there, I know immediately what I'll be reading that night. Online ordering takes too much time for me to wait, and I don't want to pay extra just to get it there early.

Hmmm. The books I buy are usually manga and they come from Barnes and Nobles or Borders. Otherwise, I don't really buy books, unless there is a scholastic program thingy at our school.

I tend to borrow books from the library instead. I've never bought anything online though. I think online ordering is more convenient, but I'm not sure how long it takes for you to receive the book.
