:Scroll Down Page For Updated Version as of 3/25/07:

Just in concept thumbnail resolution, right now. I got approval from my instructor to do my next project digitally rather than in conté crayons (<-- the devil), so this is the thumbnail I'm going with to develop into a high res painting. We'll see how it goes, since I haven't done much really serious digital art.

Much to be worked out as far as anatomy and things. The foremost guy's obviously got a gimpishly short arm, etc etc.
Feel free to give any crits on overall composition and other things, though. <3
I'll be fleshing this out more over the weekend, so expect updates soon. Probably have about two weeks to finish, maybe three.

I'm not very good at giving compositional critiques, as that's not a strong point of mine. But I really like the way you've laid out the scene - there's plenty of movement in it and I rather like how it's more panoramic in it's shape. Looks like it's going to turn out awesome and I look forward to seeing the finished result!

I agree with what Aliena said, it's a nice strong composition with nice movement in it. The only thing that's throwing me off right now is the foremost rider, I can't determine the way he's sitting on his mount. This may be because of the greyscale, and it may work itself out in color, but right now it kind of looks like he's riding side-saddle (maybe he is? ^^; ) If he's straddling it though, I think you would need to move the leg back further in line with the torso and give a little indication of his crotch area. Other than that, I'm lovin it. :)

Thanks, you two, I appreciate the encouragement and critique! ^^ <3

Good point about the foremost guy, Navidian, I'll be sure to pay special attention to pushing him back more into the clear when I'm hashing it out more and check some refs of what sitting on a saddle does look like.

Actually, this is going to stay greyscale, as far as my Drawing course assignment. So I'll be getting in every little variation of light that I can, to keep it strong in grey. Once the assignment's complete, though, and if I've done the greyscaling accurately, it should be simple to color it with a Multiply layer, at least rudimentarily.

Oh, man... I'm not good with layouts and compositions so I don't think I qualify at giving such advice XD Plus, this piece is really amazing~ A lot of movement *3* and what I was about to say abou the foremost character, Navi already pointed it out much better than the way I would've XD

Overall, this is a nice piece *3* Out of curiosity, what are the creatures that they're riding supposed to be? :o

Good luck on finishing it! I'd definitely like to see the progress on this picture~ X3 <3

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I appreciate it~ x3 <3

I was trying to loosely base them on the Ostard mounts from Ultima Online. ( http://fiveostards.tripod.com/sitebu...rdedostard.jpg )
But wound up basing the design very closely on them. xD The whole mountable raptor-type creature thing isn't a new idea, but I still may try to change their armor design a bit, so they aren't pulled straight from that.

I prefer the name my friend came up with: dragonturkies. XD~

My first thought was a dinosaur version of a chocobo! lol. Dragonturkeys work!

hmm, aliena already mentioned the forefost rider, but looking at the rider again...another thing that is a bit off is the proportion of his head in relation to the rest of his body. His head looks a bit too big for his torso, and his arms and legs too small...because of the way his front leg is positioned, it looks as if the torso is cut off abruptly and is shorter than it should be.

But still, its an awesome composition. Keep working on it, and on building up your values. C:

Ah, thank you for pointing out the torso issue! I can definitely see it, now. I was probably anticipating the edge of my composition too much and shortened things so they would fit without his head going off. Or I suck with anatomy. xD Either way, I'll put an effort into fixing it. <3

Values will definitely have special attention, since low contrast is always a problem of mine. ><

WIP Update after a fair bit of repainting on the thumbnail today.

Everyone who helped me with critique before and anyone else who wants to pitch in, please give your feedback on the changes, if you like. ^^
I'm thinking his torso might -still- be a little short, or his hips too small, or something. >>;
And the arms still bother me a little. Might've cramped the composition some, too, with all my changes, and need to air it back out again.

Anyway, any thoughts quite appreciated. <3

Oooh really liking this so far! Especially as the panoramic view and style make it look like a screenie from some new hot 3d animated movie XD

The composition is looking really cool so far, and I like the design of the mounts - they're like a cross between chocobos and velociraptors, both of which are awesome. Only crit I can think of with the update would be the guy's legs - I'm really not a very flexible person, but it kinda hurts to have my legs splayed out at that angle. If riding a chocoraptor is anything like horse-riding stance, the legs would be more comfortable pointed slightly forward? Not completely sure.

Sorry I can't think of anything other than that!

And go post this in the sketchbook, that place needs some more love! T-T

Thanks a lot for the crits, Chisa! ^^ Proved helpful, as I fixed the leg in class this morning. <3

Hopefully things are starting to be in the right places, for me to go in high res soon and really define things.
